I made a mistake reading newspapers online today.
All spitting out anti-eastern european/Polish venom.

It doesn't matter I work, do Master's degree and bring my child in love of both British and Polish culture I'm still 'destroying this country'. I give up.

Thats not everyones views by far. Just the ignorant peoples views. Am for you.

OrmRenewed · 01/05/2010 08:20

I think you have been unfortunate in your choice of papers farmazon. Not everyone thinks that at all. Have a look at thread about whether immigration has directly impacted anyone's lives - then you'll get a better impression.

DS#2's newest best mate in school is a little Polish lad. Sadly DS doesn't have a newspaper column

YANBU, this makes me really angry too. Everybody seems to ignore the fact that we need some level of immigration. We have a declining workforce and an aging population that we need to pay for and we can't do it on just British people.

Every Polish person I've met has been a credit to their country - hard working, polite, friendly. I don't understand why they get such a bad press.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 01/05/2010 08:50

farmazon - change newspapers - pronto

You are welcome here to many people

Klerka · 01/05/2010 09:00

YANBU.

My DH is from Eastern Europe, we met at work. He is exceptionally hard working, has now moved up in his profession but told me of his story when he had £5 left in his pocket when he got his first job pot washing 5 years ago. Both his country's, Polish and other nations' soldiers made up a big proportion of airmen who helped defend this country in the war.

porcamiseria · 01/05/2010 09:06

what are you reading????? I have not seen this anywhere.....honest guv

BAFE · 01/05/2010 09:07

YANBU to be upset at being made a scapegoat for immigration problems.

However, i can't stand the fact that whenever the poles are mentioned, someone always says "they worked side by side with us during the ww2". Of course they did. They were hardly likely to side with Germany were they?

BessieBoots · 01/05/2010 09:09

YANBU. I did notice this and feel very angry for you.
I agree with DemonChild:
"Every Polish person I've met has been a credit to their country - hard working, polite, friendly. I don't understand why they get such a bad press."
The Polish people who have moved to my area certainly have a positive impact on the community.

Magaly · 01/05/2010 09:10

Polish people have a reputation for being smart and hard working don't they? I am not in the UK and haven't read anything anti-Polish, but fwiw, where I live people have a good opinion of the Polish.

Bumbleconfusus · 01/05/2010 09:11

Those discussing the war, I'm pretty sure there was a fair amount of anti-Polish-ness (putting random hyphens in here all over the place) in the 1930's/40s and has continued to be. Its not a new thing and will probably continue.

sweetnitanitro · 01/05/2010 09:11

Farmazon- the only people 'destroying this country' are the knuckle-dragging bigots. You sound like you're worth 1000 of them.

Meglet · 01/05/2010 09:13

My sisters boyfriend is polish. He works his arse off and is a good bloke.

ps, I know this is different because it's not in the run up to an election here in Ireland where I am, and who knows how we'll react, we have the daily mail here too........

but despite the thousands and thousands of Polish people working here, nobody blames them for our dire recession. They blame the banks and politicians. I live in a different country from you, but I will be forever grateful to the Polish influx into Ireland because it has shaken things up a little. The same level of claustrophobic homogeneity is no longer just assumed.

sundaylunch · 01/05/2010 09:17

I feel for you Farmazon.

Believe me, not everyone in this country is anti-immigration. It's just that those ignorant xenophobes ill-informed right wingers that are against it seem to have the loudest voices.

That's because the rest of us are getting on with quietly living our lives alongside our lovely immigrant neighbours and colleagues, and don't see a problem.

You are very welcome here, to me and to most people I know.

JackBauerIsZonerrific · 01/05/2010 09:25

YANBU. At all. It's disgusting.

Bumbleconfusus · 01/05/2010 09:33

Thebutterflyeffect - perhaps those you spoke to are the people who like now, don't mind, but many others do and did. My grandfather was Polish and he suffered disdain from many Brits (not least from my other granddad, what fabulous Saturday lunches we had...)

catinthehat2 · 01/05/2010 09:33

Dunno, haven't seen any examples of this anti Polish "venom" you are talking about.
Nor has anyone else here. And you haven't linked to anything. And I think there's plenty of examples above of what the feelings about Polish people are in this country

So, sorry, looks like attention-seeking from someone who wants to be a victim.

Meh.

yeah right catinhat, 'sorry black person, I've never heard anyone use the word nigger so you must be making it up about being racially persecuted and enjoy playing victim'

It's not your place to say OP is attention seeking or has not experienced what she says she is.

Firawla · 01/05/2010 09:40

YANBU
as a Muslim i feel that kind of sentiment @ times too, but not everyone thinks that way.

thehillsarealive · 01/05/2010 09:42

screaminEagle that is disgusting behaviour! I am

OP I know a few polish people, they work hard and I dont see what the problem is.

I wonder how all of these bigots would feel if they had to move to another country and were made to feel unwelcome?

brennannbooth · 01/05/2010 09:48

Sorry to hear that farmazon. Lots of lovely Polish people live in our area and we are a happier place for it.
