I know I should just delete it but this kind of thing really annoys me. Also maybe Im just an over sensitive (half) greek but why is Greeks in capitals.....She sent this this morning:

The writer of this piece emigrated to UK just over 40 years ago - On the ship there were , Italians, Yugoslavs and GREEKS, (Note - All European people!!) all looking forward to starting a new life in ENGLAND . I arrived with £20 in my pocket and that's all I had to my name. Did I put my hand out?? Of course not - I got a job and paid my way just like everyone else who came to this country back then.
Now, it's my taxes that subsidize these people who think they have a God given right (read Allah) to come here and criticise those of us who have worked for the country we now call home.

If I didn't like what I saw when I got here I would have gone home - they have the same option. If they don't want to become BRITISH , they can................GO BACK TO WHERE THEY CAME FROM - WE DON'T NEED THEM HERE!!! DO WE NO NO NO

OUR BRITAIN!!!!!
When will this stop?
They want 2 of their own public holidays, because Christians have Christmas, Easter & Good Friday,
They force our children to eat Halal Meat Pies and Sausage Rolls from the school canteens, so the Muslim kids can feel more BRITISH, we were not consulted about this change, they went ahead and just did it.
Our foods are slowly all becoming Halal foods, our cheeses, chocolates even good old sanitarium foods
Our Government is ALLOWING this to happen, it has to stop now, while we still have some power to be able to stop it.

Regarding Our National Anthem
I am sorry, but after hearing they want to sing the National Anthem in Arabic- enough is enough. No where or at no other time in our nation's history, did they sing it in Italian, Japanese, Polish, Irish (Celtic), German, Portuguese, Greek, or any other language because of immigration. It was written in English, and should be sung word for word the way it was written.
The news broadcasts even gave the translation -- not even close.
I am not sorry if this offends anyone, this is MY COUNTRY - IF IT IS YOUR COUNTRY SPEAK UP -- please pass this along I am not against immigration just come through like everyone else. Get a sponsor; have a place to lay your head; have a job; pay your taxes, live by the rules AND LEARN THE LANGUAGE as all other immigrants have in the past -- and LONG LIVE GREAT BRITAIN !

PART OF THE PROBLEM. Think about this: If you don't want to forward this for fear of offending someone -YOU'RE PART OF THE PROBLEM !!!!

Will we still be the Country of Choice and still be BRITAIN if we continue to make the changes forced on us by the people from other countries who have come to live in BRITAIN because it is the Country of Choice??
Think about it!
IMMIGRANTS, NOT BRITONS , MUST ADAPT.
It is Time for THE BRITS to Speak up.

Arrived with 20 quid in their pocket and lo - went straight in to a job!!!! Fink it's a load of crap. You cannot just come to the UK and start work, legally, without the correct documentation, registration etc!

Arrive with 20 quid in your pocket and if you don't like - turn around and go home - right - with just 20 quid, you can deffo get safe passage back from whence you came! Oh no - you probably can't!!!

It's a load of made-up clap trap!

Gleeb · 26/04/2010 12:35

I wouldn't think twice about sending it straight to HR, I wouldn't get into a conversation with her about it.

ajandjjmum · 26/04/2010 12:36

I think she was trying to be nice about Greek people - she included them in the group who came over to England and adapted.

No comment on the rest, but I don't think she was being rude to OP.

Fluffyone · 26/04/2010 12:38

That is inappropriate use of work email, many firms would consider this a disciplinary offence. So you can either speak to her about it, and advise her not to do it again, or make a complaint to management.
I've just finished dealing with a similar case that resulted in a formal written warning being given to the employee.

MmeLindt · 26/04/2010 12:39

Has anyone ever seen/heard/read the National Anthem sung in Arabic?

AuntieMaggie · 26/04/2010 12:44

This would be considered against my company's diversity policy and the person who sent it would be lucky to keep their job!

I would send it to HR especially as you work in local government and people in local government shouldn't be sending stuff like this.

Also there is a risk that someone else she has sent it to will report it and see you on the distribution list and you could get in trouble for not reporting it

Besom · 26/04/2010 12:50

If I got this at work I would send it straight to management.

Depends how strongly you feel about it what you do but at the very least you should tell her not to send anything like this to you again.

clam · 26/04/2010 12:57

I've just had to sign something about responsible use of the internet at work, and I'm pretty sure it mentioned this sort of thing as wholly imappropriate.
Speak to HR. Let them deal with it.

"she won't know that it came from you" unless they want you to put your complaint in writing and possibly use it as evidence at some point. Whatever, I wouldn't let that stop me complaining.

AuntieMaggie · 26/04/2010 13:01

Our policy includes having to report anything we receive like this and lots of people have been in trouble in our company when they'd not sent stuff but just received it.

You have to be so careful these days.

Ivykaty44 · 26/04/2010 13:01

I would report this, otherwise if you don't and it ever comes out you had the email you don't want anyone thinking you had anything to do with this.

Just report it so whoever is sending this stuff can be told that it isn't right or correct to do such a thing

EggyAllenPoe · 26/04/2010 13:02

if i sent something like this i could be sacked. It would constitute 'non-work' email use for one thing, and 'rascism, or the appearance of it' on the other.

If you work in a company where they check emails (and i do!) i would warn your co-worker that emploers are very senstitive to this sort of thng happening on emails that have the company name all over them (even with disclaimer).

mrsbean78 · 26/04/2010 13:03

Report it. It's sickening and offensive.

Bessie123 · 26/04/2010 13:08

eh? What a strange email to send.

jasper · 26/04/2010 13:16

A very lovely friend of my dad's sends me this sort of tripe. It's his view and he is entitled to hold it and share it.

I think most workplaces have a policy against ANYTHING not work related.

But your colleague probably thinks it IS work related

jasper · 26/04/2010 13:19

What gets me about that sort of thing is it is such a neddy , oversimplistic view of a complex topic that genuinely calls for debate

BornToFolk · 26/04/2010 13:22

If I got something like that at work, I'd go straight to HR.

Anyone fuck-witted enough to circulate that kind of rubbish using their work email deserves the consequences.

HarderToKidnap · 26/04/2010 13:31

It's funny that she is so het up about people learning English, but she can't actually write coherently.

crumpette · 26/04/2010 13:38

Gosh she can be fired immediately for that email, don't think the Greek bit was deliberate she just sounds like a total idiot, am so shocked that she has the stupidity to forward that and especially do so from her work email address!!!

crumpette · 26/04/2010 13:40

and yes OP all companies can track emails that have been sent or forwarded- do not send it on to anyone except to HR and then keep a copy and make a remark about how inappropriate it is. Unless you are very friendly with this fuckwitted colleague in which case tell her to never send things like this again or she will lose her job

asteri · 26/04/2010 13:44

hardertokidnap I did think that too.

OP posts:
porcamiseria · 26/04/2010 13:47

very very inappropriate for work. is she a mate? then tell her to bog off

Not a mate? consider forwarding to HR

WebDude · 26/04/2010 14:37

Best keep any discussion (ie warning not to send anything similar) to face-to-face contact with the co-worker, so any investigation doesn't have any response back to her in the e-mail system (even deleted mail may have been copied to an archive at the time of sending).

It might look as if you shared her view, if you were to warn that such e-mail breaks policy or would be looked down on.

If there are expectations that such e-mail should be reported, then you have no choice. It would be easy to determine (a) who had received the e-mail and as important, (b) who had opened the e-mail.

So it would only be a matter of time once an investigation was started to see who had reported it and who had not. Not reporting can be seen as agreement with the views expressed, and this is pretty much like some "hate mail" from someone supporting the BNP.

beanlet · 26/04/2010 14:59

It is wholly unacceptable. But it's tricky.

If she's a close friend and has only sent it to people she considers to be friends, I would go round to her desk and tell her politely that her email was inappropriate and probably violates workplace IT and diversity policies, and that if it happens again you will have no choice but to tell HR.

If she's not a close friend and/or she's sent it round the whole office, I would print it out and take it to HR in person, and explain your concerns.

My mother, who is a chief exec, has a policy of always writing/emailing if she has positive things to say to an employee, and always speaking in person/on the phone if she has to criticise their performance.
