to wonder who actually eats this stuff?

I was searching for asparugus in Sainsbury's today and couldn't find it so ended up spending a considerable time perusing the tinned section.I spotted a very unpleasant looking tin of Goblins "beef casserole with dumplings". The main ingredient was water followed by dried carrots, dried swede, a load of unpronounceable chemicals and, way down the list, dehydrated beef (7%). I was just left wondering why anybody would actually choose to eat this kind of product. It wasn't even cheap - probably the same price as a kebab. Also, does anyone know who eats tinned potatoes?

I saw a tesco value tinned chicken curry the other day... nearly bought it just to see what it consisted of then realised I couldnt even bring myself to read the ingredients..

bubbles4 · 17/04/2010 19:50

I can remember eating them as a child when there was a potato shortage and they were so vile I always said I would never eat them again.

I wouldnt think of buying something like a tin of beef casserole with dumplings but then I suppose somebody must or the shop wouldnt have it on sale.

getthewineinthefridge · 17/04/2010 19:51

When we lived on a boat and could not be sure of food supplies etc, I must confess to various tinned "meals" being fairly staple to us. It meant we didn't need to worry about getting to a shop.

Otherwise, grief, I actually shudder as I pass that shelf and have often wondered myself who would actually buy them day to day....

APassionateWoman · 17/04/2010 19:52

Old people like a good tinned tatty, don't they? With a nice dollop of salad cream and some crab paste sangers...

God knows.

I often wonder who eats those dried cooked breakfasts in a packet? You know the ones with a picture of bacon and eggs on the front. How the hell does it work? Is it like astronauts food or something?

CantSupinate · 17/04/2010 19:59

hotdogs in a round tin. My mind boggles. Blech blech blech.

benotafraid · 17/04/2010 20:03

We get tins of asda boiled potatoes to put in currys because we think they taste nicer than fresh potatoes.

AgentProvocateur · 17/04/2010 20:05

I'll tell you who eats vile tinned stuff (including the breakfasts) - teenage boys who go camping for the weekend. And sometimes they eat it cold out the tin. Barf!

bran · 17/04/2010 20:05

I buy tinned chunky beef soup, which can't be all that different from stew surely. It doesn't have any chemicals in it though.

Mumbothasrunoutofbatteries · 17/04/2010 20:08

My uncle puts tinned potatoes in his curries (also lychees and tinned peaches and his curries are famous. Totally lovely!

upsylazy · 17/04/2010 20:08

but surely your chunky beef soup contains more than 7% beef? And is it dehydrated?

My dad used to eat 'canned' stuff-he felt it easy to heat in his cab if he'd travelled for hundreds of miles and was in the back of beyond with no eateries.

I wouldn't eat it myself.

Saw someone buying cans of 'breakfast' last week in Tescos

bran · 17/04/2010 20:11

Do you want me to haul my fat arse off this chair and go and check?

parakeet · 17/04/2010 20:16

I don't eat them that often, but I do like to have some tinned potatoes in the house, in case of running out of "fresh".

Funny you should mention 'em because I am actually planning to have some TONIGHT. Husband is out, and planning a real slobs' dinner of beefburgers, tinned new potatoes (with butter melting over them, mmm) and baked beans. In fact, just off to get the beefburgers in the overn right now...don't care what you think of me!

tethersend · 17/04/2010 20:18

Gah

pranma · 17/04/2010 20:19

tinned potatoes are lovely sliced and fried-used them when we had a narrow boat- I had forgotten them

poshwellies · 17/04/2010 20:20

I used to love wrestlers hamburgers from a tin as a child..Gawd knows what was and wasn't in them

Narabug · 17/04/2010 20:22

OMG tethers thats GROSS!!! Why am I macarbrely curious as to what it looks like inside?

I have to confess to once buying some canned meals when I was a student out of curiosity/desperation. They were pretty vile..... a bit like dog food?

Sidge · 17/04/2010 20:23

When I was a student I would eat tinned potatoes, usually roasted or chopped in half and fried. Much cheaper at that time than buying a sack of spuds that went sprouty and mouldy before I could eat them all.

I'd eat pretty much anything if I was broke and hungry. I've eaten rehydrated ration packs in the snow on Dartmoor and when you're that cold and desperate you'll eat anything.

Actually I'd rather eat tinned beef stew than asparagus!

LetThereBeRock · 17/04/2010 20:23

Wonder no longer Nara.

Sidge · 17/04/2010 20:26

After looking at that LTBR I change my position - I'd eat pretty much anything except that chicken

poshwellies · 17/04/2010 20:26

Dear god at that chicken creature in a can!!!

Bellared · 17/04/2010 20:28

I think I've just been sick in my mouth, thats vile!

voteplease · 17/04/2010 20:29

Mmmm Westlers burgers. We used to buy huge tins at Makro then boil them in water. Eaten with loads of fried onions.Lush.

I grew up eating Heinz oxtail soup, westlers burgers and Campbell's meatballs.

LetThereBeRock · 17/04/2010 20:29

Anyone for canned pork brains?

Kathyjelly · 17/04/2010 20:34

My friends who go off-roading in the sahara think tins of beans and little sausages or boil in the can steak & kidney pudding are brilliant.

As far as I'm concerned it's there for when civilisation breaks down and we all have to live in nuclear shelters. Why would anyone want to eat that stuff on holiday when they could be eating barbecued fish on a beach?
