to wonder who actually eats this stuff?

I was searching for asparugus in Sainsbury's today and couldn't find it so ended up spending a considerable time perusing the tinned section.I spotted a very unpleasant looking tin of Goblins "beef casserole with dumplings". The main ingredient was water followed by dried carrots, dried swede, a load of unpronounceable chemicals and, way down the list, dehydrated beef (7%). I was just left wondering why anybody would actually choose to eat this kind of product. It wasn't even cheap - probably the same price as a kebab. Also, does anyone know who eats tinned potatoes?

Ah but that's the whole point jurisfiction - HRH's pasties were made of organic meat... which tasted processed. Genius.

Fresh Parmesan not unhealthy! All strong cheese much better than mild bcs you use far far less of it to get taste punch.

jurisfictionoperative · 17/04/2010 23:18

bleugh! mechanically reclaimed meat happens when they take all the skin, bones, gristle and leftovers, and basically squeeze them very hard. The resulting pink sludge, is mechanically reclaimed meat! what is actually right with it? [vomit smiley]

said · 17/04/2010 23:18

Nah, we still use loads of parmesan.

said · 17/04/2010 23:19

But what's wrong with the skin, bones and gristle? Seriously? Always assuming the animal is not diseased.

jurisfictionoperative · 17/04/2010 23:20

obm.. oh! now I see!

jurisfictionoperative · 17/04/2010 23:21

said.. nothing, if you like that sort of thing!! its just gunk!

I loved sandwich spread as a child and craved it with DS, it is wonderful.
hicken in a can sounds and looks vile
We have tinned fruit
beans
spaghetti
meatballs
hot dogs
custard
rice pudding
most of them are 'just in case' and I barely use them apart from the beans and hotdogs.
DP was practically brought up on tins and processed foods and it took me years before he would have a homemade bolognese rather then heinz tinned one. He still prefers a burger to a juicy steak.

But I eat (adore) chicken skin and pork crackling and you use bones in stock etc. I just don't get the squeamishness about it all. Obviously not as you main diet (when you don't know the source etc) but I don't get what's actually bad about it.

muminthemiddle · 17/04/2010 23:35

I actually like tinned strawberrys, although admit they taste absolutely nothing like the real thing.
It must be a throw back to my childhood when my gran would let me have them with tinned cream.
As for the other stuff-no way.

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 17/04/2010 23:41

I still love sandwich spread, I used to pick out all the bits of veg, tomato seeds first, then the green stuff, then the red stuff

onebatmother · 17/04/2010 23:44

I see your point said. I think it's the 'mechanically recovered' bit that's bleurgh, where they basically get a jetwash and blow the eyeballs out

pigletmania · 17/04/2010 23:50

You lot obviously have never been students , used to eat a lot of this crap, Frey Bentos pies, canned curry, meatballs with spaghetti, all day breakfast in a can, now i would never go near the stuff yuck, but when you are a student you have guts made of steele

said · 18/04/2010 00:08

Mmm, eyeballs. They are a delicacy (somewhere)

I quite like tinned asparagus, rolled up in a slice of ham with loads of mayo.
I have also been known to eat Fray Bentos pies (with fresh veg I'll have you know), some of the All Day Breakfast In A Tin things... Oh, and Pot Noodles, which I still love.

TheNextMrsDepp · 18/04/2010 00:25

Aaah, this takes me back. My first date with DH, many many years ago, he cooked me dinner. Chilli con carne with rice. I was quite impressed, it wasn't bad. Then I spotted the empty can in the bin. Bleargh. He still can't cook.

poshwellies · 18/04/2010 00:33

If you have a camper van then tinned spuds are a goer.

They ain't bad.tinned peas and carrots ..they are sweet as hell...yuck.

At 18,I moved out-I thought I could cook,my special was a beef fray bentos pie, with mash and peas (frozen natch).

Good ol days.

Tiredmumno1 · 18/04/2010 00:34

I just would not be able to bring myself to do.

however if i made my own shepherds pie and had it tinned, i would be able to count on m'netters to buy it, it is so scrumptious, if i must say so

Tiredmumno1 · 18/04/2010 00:36

To do it

porcamiseria · 18/04/2010 09:37

poor oaps eat this, sad

midori1999 · 18/04/2010 10:31

I am quite pleased to have founnd out because of this thread this morning that DH's ex wife used to buy tinned potatoes often. No wonder he thinks I am the best cook ever...

I have to admit to sometimes buying tinned hot dogs though, the kids love them in sandwiches for lunch occasionally, and also corned beef, I love a corned beef toasty or hash.

Pronoia · 18/04/2010 10:32

Old men.

I also eat tinned potatoes, they are delicious hangover food, fried up with poached egg on top.

SpeedyGonzalez · 18/04/2010 20:53
