and should never have been the subject of national debate, since it affects about 100 people? (ok, maybe more, but not many)

I was a vegetarian when it was banned, btw. I just think it's such a non-issue, and can't believe it is still being trotted out as a reason not to vote Tory.

SEA, chickens are not hunted to their death but if a fox manages to get in with them it would quite easily rip the heads off 100 in one night.

ravenAK · 16/04/2010 22:53

It's the least of anyone's worries.

OK, barbaric, outdated, socially unacceptable & bloody useless at 'controlling' the fox population - 10x as many foxes were run over as were killed by the hunt.

But there are much more important animal welfare issues.

(Also, Labour haven't actually managed to put a stop to it, as such, judging by the last thread I remember on this subject...)

southeastastra · 16/04/2010 22:55

this country is the same all over, save the green belt stuff housing for humans

save chickens, stuff food for humans

poshwellies · 16/04/2010 22:55

Agree with the shiteness of intensively reared animals.

Anyone who buys cheap eggs and meat should be ashamed of themselves.

jurisfictionoperative · 16/04/2010 22:55

No but the lower classes eat them though, don't they!

usualsuspect · 16/04/2010 22:55

A fox is an animal ..not some hooray henry getting off on killing animals

usualsuspect · 16/04/2010 22:56

Some people can only afford cheap eggs and chickens ....

ravenAK · 16/04/2010 22:57

£70?!

Not in my sabbing days, & who by?

southeastastra · 16/04/2010 22:58

i think it's bloody awful that people care more about effing chickens than humans in 2010

but depressingly it doesn't suprise me at all

jurisfictionoperative · 16/04/2010 22:59

Believe me, as a not very well off person, always more money out than in, I know about what people can afford. I do not but cheap chicken or eggs, I eat less eggs and chicken but buy better.

SpicedGerkin · 16/04/2010 22:59

poshwellies · 16/04/2010 23:00

We can't afford expensive meat but neither we'll we eat £2 chickens just because we they are 'cheap'.

A roast chicken here is a treat and something we only eat monthly if that as I only buy free range or organic.

Have hunting friends so we are lucky to get half a deer occasionally (maybe twice a year).IMO the battery chicken has the worse life and I'm not ashamed to eat the vension.

chandellina · 16/04/2010 23:00

no one needs to eat £2 chickens, and no chicken should cost £2.

winnybella · 16/04/2010 23:00

Oh, so it's effing chicken or pig, but poor little precious fox ?

Get a grip. They are all animals.

Downdog · 16/04/2010 23:00

I agree with Chandellina - it's a class thing.

While I do find it distasteful I think it is a cultural pursuit - what is the difference between Brits hunting fox or rabbit & the certain native indian tribes that are permitted to hunt whales?

THe foxes I've seen in the cities are pretty dreadfully regarded & treated unsympathetically.

I feel more for intensively reared chicken and pigs - but no party is going to ban those are they?

wastwinsetandpearls · 16/04/2010 23:01

I don't think it is a huge issue. You may call me a twat but I draw the line at being called upper class.

usualsuspect · 16/04/2010 23:01

No one needs to rip a fox to pieces for sport either

southeastastra · 16/04/2010 23:02

english upper classes are weirdos though

Primroselady · 16/04/2010 23:03

The hunt normally kills those foxes that are ill or too old to outwit the hounds, these foxes are often riddled with mange, extremely thin and ill. While certain sectors of our society might not like it, there is no other proven method of controlling foxes.
To see 20 chickens killed so a fox can eat one certainly does not make a fox a victim in many peoples eyes.
I do not think it should have been made into such a major polictical issue, however for the labour party it was easy votes to pick up, as so many people do not have any understanding of it.

chandellina · 16/04/2010 23:03

or put a bolt through the head of a cow, but McDonalds does a lot of business.

TheFallenMadonna · 16/04/2010 23:06

In terms of animal welfare it's a definite sideline.

But comments like only 100 people are involved just make you look out of touch.

poshwellies · 16/04/2010 23:06

Makes me laugh how people think it's only the upper class that hunt. You'll find that most of the people behind the hunts and the workings of the kennels and stables are working class.

To them it's their job not about status or class.

I don't support it but I feel for the ones who have lost their homes etc through the ban.

southeastastra that might have been a tiny weeny bit of an overgeneralization, perhaps?

Will tell DP that he is a weirdo...

Seriously, surely you can see that all those thousands of animals we eat on daily basis have a much more miserable life than the relatively few foxes that get hunted?

LilQueenie · 16/04/2010 23:08

Its not method of controlling foxes its a so called 'sport'. If you want to go hunt a fox then have someone shoot at you while doing so to make it fair! Its disgusting. No different to bull fighting and dog fighting.
