People would get over flying and just get boats and trains instead

Yeah my best friend's a teacher and she's stuck in Prague - there's more to life than education though poke

I wouldn't mind going everywhere by boat and train provided holidays were increased in length to allow for the extra travel time.
(teachers therefore have no excuse for flying . Actually come to think, my parents were teachers and the only time they flew was once to visit aged rellies in British Columbia)

Vallhala · 17/04/2010 00:27

How very dare you! I'm scared of water so that's boats out for me, but planes are beautiful. I used to live under Concorde's flightpath then in later years near an RAF area where Eurofighters and Tornados nearly touched the treetops of the nearby woods (and on one occasion did. Luckily the pilot wasfine but the £millions of fighterjet a write-off). Now I live not too far from a 'working' military aircraft museum and see everything fromaerobatics, Red Arrows and Spitfires to Jaguars and Tornados. I hate what they are capable of wrt to killing but adore the beauty and engineering. I love travelling on planes too and would adore to learn to fly one.

YANBU

LetThereBeRock · 17/04/2010 00:50

I've been watching the occasional plane going overhead and I find it quite soothing to lie in bed listening to them.

It's good to hear them again. It's reassuring for me that things are beginning to work again, at least more so than they were on Thursday.
I don't like such disruptions to my orderly world and the thought of this volcano causing long term problems disturbs me.

And yes I am weird.

DeirdreB · 17/04/2010 00:56

Used to live under Heathrow flight path, back down south with DC's thinking great to be back in "london", weather great but I don't miss the planes - then they stopped!! Kew, Richmond and Bushy were great with no planes - Maybe someone is trying to trick me into moving back.......

daysoftheweek · 17/04/2010 01:06

YA and ANBU

'tis lovely and quiet would like a bit more of it

but a little holiday or the occasional trip also nice

so maybe we need to restrict travel a bit

amidaiwish · 17/04/2010 15:10

A world without planes

ronx · 17/04/2010 15:17

YABU. How else am I supposed to visit my relatives (including my elderly mum) in the Caribbean? Banana Boat?

Mrs1GeneGenie · 17/04/2010 15:31

Isn't it fantastic mother nature still has the last word?

Wonder what all the very well paid air traffic controllers are doing with all their time off?

Rosa · 17/04/2010 15:38

Think of the 1000'S of people worldwide who would be jobless... from airport workers to areas that rely on tourism to survive..Restrict possibly but not ban .I for one hope it resolves soon but its up to nature to decide......

BitOfFun · 17/04/2010 15:39

I've got a thread about the sunset with pictures here...

We live in West London and it's glorious without the planes. Unfortunately, though, it is not glorious without my husband, whose birthday it is today - he's stuck in the US

Takver · 17/04/2010 16:14

Rosa, I don't think that all those people would be jobless for long - I guess that people would travel in other ways.

And of course if there were fewer British people going abroad on holidays then there would be lots more employment in the holiday areas in this country [optimistic seaside town dweller emoticon].

Rosa · 17/04/2010 17:08

Being an overseas dweller in an area that exists almost 100% on tourism despite being an important city I can't see the non European clientle coming in the numbers we have now.......Anyway lets hope that doesn't come to that.

2old4thislark · 17/04/2010 17:13

Have got a motorway at the bottom of the garden so hardly noticing the lack of planes..........

amidaiwish · 17/04/2010 19:46

lots of empty shelves in waitrose this evening... no sugar snap peas or bagged lettuce... the shelf life is only a matter of days.. wonder how empty it will get!? many people in the farms in those countries must be v worried for their livelihoods.

AliGrylls · 17/04/2010 19:48

I agree - so long as I can go on holiday in two weeks.

TheChangeSpiral · 17/04/2010 19:51

amidaiwish I read that earlier - it made me feel all soft and squishy inside!

Rosa Nowhere is that reliant on tourism - even in Thailand (which does better than most) tourism makes up less than 5% of GDP. This is mainly because most money from tourism goes into the hands of the tour operators and multinational corporations that run the resort and major hotels and rarely to local people. Aviation is a far bigger risk than a benefit to the world's poor.

amidaiwish I can understand your concern but it's a bit of a myth that food like that really benefits the people where it comes from. Most of the money goes to agri-business that owns the land and equipment. The people doing the work get a pittance for their troubles. The other ethical problem with this is that scarce resources (like rich soil and water) that should be used to grow food for the people who live there is instead used to feed rich people with luxuries because we'll pay more for it. I'm afraid no-one should feel good about buying beans flown in from Kenya in mid-winter.

Rosa · 17/04/2010 20:07

I am in an established European city not in a developing country - If the mayor says that tourism is the main source of income and tourists must be treated with respect and all OUR money is being put into improving facilities for tourists rather than locals. I stand by what I said.

Snobear4000 · 17/04/2010 21:46

YANBU. Yes the situation is dire but the clear sky is very nice.

pigletmania · 17/04/2010 21:50
