to find it really really irritating when people refer to their daughters as princesses

I probably am but it makes me grind my teeth manically. It is especially worse on FB - I have a few friends with baby girls who's status constantly say "My little princess burped today" "My little princess is soooooo gorgeous" etc etc. what is wrong with referring to them by name? It just seems a bit precious to me.

Ok, rant over. And breathe

It's not really that bad, it's the female equivalent of 'little man' isn't it?

MmeLindt · 15/04/2010 10:09

Have some

Feel better now?

"Princess" updates make my teeth itch, you are not alone

singsinthebath · 15/04/2010 10:09

Yes a bit nauseating. But at least they're giving them positive reinforcement.

LouLouH · 15/04/2010 10:10

lol, i have a daughter and she is far from a princess! She's my perfect little tomboy, im with you on the princess thing. It really grates on me. Talk about deluding them from a yound age!

YANBU unless they are decended from a royal family.

LouLouH · 15/04/2010 10:11

ooh sorry for some reason post went on twice. and i meant young.

LouLouH · 15/04/2010 10:12

no offence if any of you ladies do it, but the hairband with a flower on when a girl has no bloody hair! Why???!!

Miggsie · 15/04/2010 10:13

I hate the term as it is so passive, you are a princess if: your father is a king, or your husband is a prince. That's it. You exist by definition as an adjunct of a male.

And the associated Disney princess shite of pink, glitter, make up, high heels, massive hair, simpering and dresses makes me want to puke.

Whoops...breathe.

I once went off on one about "anodyne Disney shite" and DH turns to our friends and says "miggsie isn't on the bell curve"

Luckily he agrees with me on the princess tat.

Notalone · 15/04/2010 10:13

Lol - yes I am Notalone MmeLindt - and thanks for the chocolate. Lindt chocolate is one of my favourites lol!

It is great that people are being lovely about their daughters, it really is. However, I know a couple of older "little princesses" who seem to be a lot more spoilt and demanding than ones who are referred to just by their names. Is there a connection perhaps?

My DH calls our daughter this specifically to wind me up...I hate it!!! But, he does always justify it by adding "but if she's the princess, it means YOU'RE the Queen". That helps.

paisleyleaf · 15/04/2010 10:15

It makes me think of Eastenders' Sharon and Den.

MmeLindt · 15/04/2010 10:16

lol at the bell curve

The hairband with flowers is to draw attention to the fact that despite the fact that the baby has no hair, she is a GIRL.

Not that I used one but my SIL had them for my DN for this reason.

nickytwotimes · 15/04/2010 10:17

Yanbu. It is crap.

Kneazle · 15/04/2010 10:19

YANBU [barf] I hate "my little prince" even more somehow.

I just really don't like terms of endearment, anyway...I call my children by their names, and try to not call them anything that targets physical beauty specifically. I know that sounds a bit harsh, but I don't want to constantly reinforce the beauty thing, esp with my DD, when our culture focuses so much on that, and look what happens to our girls as a result. I know...a bit extreme, but I am so overly paranoid about my baby girl growing up hating her body, plastering 14 inches of make up on, dressing for attention and all that...

Haha the hairband made me laugh, my cousin had a little girl last year and had no hair and all she wears is pink hairbands with a flower on to make her look more like a girl. Im glad im not the only one who thinks it looks silly.

Also theres someone on my FB who all day her statuses say (in chav text)

XXX Lves mi lil prince n lil princess.

Its worse when she puts
xxx lves mi lil boiii loadzzz

urgh

sunshiney · 15/04/2010 10:27

agreed.
and i'd rather stick pins in my eyes than dress my dd in some kind of 'little princess' slogan t shirt.
(well all slogan tshirts make me queasy anyway)

Hate it too, especially when you see 'Princess on board' signs. Still, I really hate 'Little Monkey on board' as well!
