to 'blow-dry' my DS's hair?

DH thinks it's ridiculous, but if I don't do it, it's looks such a mess. DP's answer is to chop it off It's quite long and wild curly, but at the back he has lovely ringlets, and the front and top is straight if blow dried, if not it stands on end and he looks like a loon.

Last night i tried to do it quicky, without a brush, but DS got irrate and picked up the brush and did it himself (not the drying, just the brushing, he's only 14mo!) DP gave me the .

Do anyone else do this, or am I mental??

My DC's hair is easily managed, but I do know a lady who straightens her daughter's hair with GHD's on the basis that she only does it once a week and it is then neat and manageable, which seems pretty reasonable to me. Her daughter is 3 and the hair would otherwise be full of knots and matts causing lots of distress.

BattyKoda · 09/04/2010 12:34

GHD's...now there's an idea

DS2's hair is the same and I have to blow dry it to get it to sit right lol. He loves it.

worldgonemad72 · 09/04/2010 12:39

tbh i like seeing babies and toddlers with wild curly hair, it looks cute. ive used the hairdryer once on my dd when we were in a rush to go a party but other than that i wouldn't bother.

gingernutlover · 09/04/2010 12:44

i blow dry dd's hair and always have done, she used to love the feel of it when she was a baby and now just loves sitting infront of the mirror admiring herself while i do it. And it does make it more managable

I would use GHD's on her though, they are far more damamging to hair than a dryer

TheLadyEvenstar · 09/04/2010 12:46

its not the fact DS2's hair is wild but it gets tangled unless it is 100% dry before he goes to sleep.

BattyKoda · 09/04/2010 12:46

worldgonemad - I leave the back wild, just dry the top so that it doesn't stand on end!

He does love it!

I don't see the problem, we blow dry ds 1.5yrs hair too sometimes, well dh is more into blow drying it than me really but as long as your dc not scared of the hair dryer then fine

YellowDaffodil · 09/04/2010 13:34

I've used hairdryer on DD since she was 2ish. If I don't her hair takes so long to dry that it tangles really badly and brushing hurts her. She wants her hair long like her friends so its the only sensible option.

YANBU or mental!

cuddlysoutheastastra · 09/04/2010 13:35

perfecly reasonable

fillybuster · 09/04/2010 13:42

I blow dry both my dcs hair....dd because it needs it (its fairly long and would get really tangled) and ds because a) its better than going to bed with wet hair, especially in winter b) he quite likes a few minutes of 'mummy time' after dd has had 10 mins of blowdrying and c) because I'd prefer him being used to it than it becoming a big deal if we need to do it sometimes at the swimming pool etc and he were to make a fuss.

FWIW, ds has short hair, but it still looks much nicer after being dried and brushed properly. DH approves fully

Fine. I dry and straighten DD's hair and have for years as it's easy to deal with then. Without you can't even put it up without it looking untidy

upahill · 09/04/2010 13:50

Well Ds2 Blow dries his own hair. Mind you he is 10 and his hair is past his shoulders!

usualsuspect · 09/04/2010 13:52

Well I have been know to straighten my ds,s hair and hes 17

SusieCarmichael · 09/04/2010 13:54

please don't use ghds on children

it will ruin their hair...

is your son mixed race batty just put detangling spray on to comb it and then use hair oil, it will be easier to manage and the lovely ringlets will still be there

SusieCarmichael · 09/04/2010 13:56

oh, to answer your question though... nothing wrong with blow drying if you like the result

MamaMtundu · 09/04/2010 14:02

My eldest DS is 5 and has fab curls and doesn't want to cut them off, although I guess that day will come .

His hair only gets washed once a week or less otherwise gets too dry and frizzy, but he does get it wet every night at bathtime. I don't bother blowdrying it, but in the morning I squirt it with leave-in conditioner so can brush out the tangles without tears. The damp curls then re-form and spring back beautifully. If no time, then it just gets left wild that morning. Also top money saving tip; save your squirty leave-in conditioner bottle and just refill with about 1/4 normal conditioner mixed with 3/4 water.

SusieCarmichael · 09/04/2010 14:20

i do that too with the conditioner mama much cheaper

BattyKoda · 09/04/2010 16:04

Leave in conditioner is a good idea...

Am glad I'm not mental...DP made me think I was nuts 'styling' a 14mo boys hair!

I have to say that straightening children's hair feels plain wrong to me. GHDS should be for 12 and over, it all smacks of Katie Price and I think makes them overly conscious about their appearance. I do not use a drier either and dd's hair is pretty wild. I like it. She looks natural.

BattyKoda · 09/04/2010 16:31

(I wasn't serious about the GHD's )

lovemyOJ · 09/04/2010 17:24

GHd's on childrens hair is soooo wrong, their hair isnt as resiliant as adult hair and will damage much easier. blowdrying hair is fine as long as it on the coolest setting and the heat is directed down the hair folicle (roots to tip)

CwtchyMama · 09/04/2010 17:34

I always dry my ds's hair for him.

No problem with it at all in my eyes.

beagle101 · 09/04/2010 18:23

Got to admit I have started drying DD's (aged 5.6) hair with a hairdryer set on cool - if I don't her hair gets really knotty (even with detangling stuff in it) and goes everywhere and she hates having anything like hairbands or clips in it so she ends up going to school looking really scruffy with knotty hair!

The hairdryer means no tearful screaming match each morning with the hairbrush and she now only looks vaguely bohemian wild haired rather than scruffy unkempt
