ARGH

What is this thing?

It seems like an attempt by the bank (Barclays) to pass on liability for fraud from them to me.

That's anti-consumer enough - but worse, it just doesn't work! It keeps declining me.

And why do they require my email address anyway? I get enough spam through the mail, don't need more in my inbox.

AIBU to rant at Barclays/Visa/the world? GRRRRRRRR

It's a PITA but if it does the job...

Tigurr · 09/04/2010 02:14

It annoys me too as my visa card is an additional card on DH's account so when it asks for "date of birth" I never know whether to put his or mine in! These days I just click the "skip now/do it later" button instead

juneybean · 09/04/2010 02:15

Ooo I don't find that I get any emails pertaining to it

longfingernails · 09/04/2010 02:21

There is no skip now button in my one - I checked really carefully!

YANBU. I had this problem - turns out the dob was a random date that had been assigned as I hadn't yet registered ????!!!! Also the password is the same as the one for my bank login which I argued was not very secure, but it can't be changed. Computer says no. Fools.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/04/2010 07:20

I hate it - creates much gnashing of teeth every time we order pizza online.
pizza ordering shouldnt be stressful!

overmydeadbody · 09/04/2010 07:28

YABU

It is a necessary pain.

I blame the hackers.

longfingernails · 09/04/2010 11:21

Well, I finally managed to get through on the phone this morning, after waiting 25 minutes with the cheesy hold music.

Turns out that my full name, according to their computer, doesn't contain spaces. Instead of "Mrs Long Fingernails", I am "MrsLongFingernails".

How on earth am I meant to know that?

Nemain · 09/04/2010 11:30

I find it a bit pointless. I always forget my password. So does my mother. We both just click 'forgot password' and set up a new one each time.

I even reset her password if she has told me to get something on her card for her. All you need is to be in possession of the card and know the DOB.

No safer than shopping without it IMO.

fuzzywuzzy · 09/04/2010 11:44

the verified pop up, uses the user name you register with the first time you register your card details, they need your email to send you your username once you've registered.

They don't use this as means to avoid liability in the event of fraud, it's just additional security, yes its a pain, but if it helps keep your card details secure.....

I dont work for Barclays or visa btw

fuzzywuzzy · 09/04/2010 11:46

but everytime you reset your password dont you get an email notifying you of the change?

If someone else did it without your knowledge you'd be able to tell the bank.

longfingernails · 09/04/2010 11:50

I don't understand the technical stuff here, but it doesn't sound very secure to me

For some reason every time I've tried to buy from a site that insists on this, the payment won't go through. And I am solvent, with credit on my credit card. Barclays and HSBC both tell me there is no reason why it shouldn't be working, but it doesn't.

ooojimaflip · 09/04/2010 11:59

It is worthless security theatre. And it is an attempt to push more liability to the consumer.

I don't CARE how secure thing are or how much is loss to fraud. I pay the credit card provider to deal with those losses.

notso · 09/04/2010 12:02

I reset my password everytime and have never had an e-mail from them.

Nymphadora · 09/04/2010 12:18

Mine never goes through until I skip it. Dh has the same issue.

longfingernails · 09/04/2010 12:25

How can you skip it?

I just didn't have that option, I am almost sure of it.

OP posts:
Nemain · 09/04/2010 13:05

fuzzywuzzy - Nope. I, or my mum, have ever had an email to confirm password reset.

EasterEggHuntIsOver · 09/04/2010 13:56

With Maestro there is no option to skip it. Very annoying.

cuddlysoutheastastra · 09/04/2010 13:57

omg i hate it too! i always have to change the password and then forget the new one and so it goes on

tablefor3 · 09/04/2010 14:00

Yes this drives me barmy. Was bullied into registered with one website because I couldn't buy anything unless I did. And now never remember the password.

Work Of The Devil.

WebDude · 09/04/2010 14:47

Rather than skipping it (which I was tempted to do, until I read the other 'small print' saying my bank would be within its rights to stop allowing online payments via the card!) I'd suggest completing the registration...

The DoB question will surely be linked with your card number (and I assume that is different, since it will presumably have a separate PIN and has a different name on to the primary cardholder)... therefore all details for going through the verification will be your details, including your DoB

Don't see the problem. I registered, everything was easy & it helps prevent fraud. Why wouldn't you want to try & protect your self online?
