i know i'm not!

i've come back because i'm fed up of trying to drum into these women some decent hymn suggestions.

i quote "we've chosen Give me joy in my heart and Lord of the Dance for our service because everyone will know them and at least they'll sing"

no they won't!!!
they'll just wonder why you've chosen "songs" that they knew in junior school and weren't any good then!

Lord of the dance? WTF? it's not an appropriate wedding hymn!!

there are about 80 million hmyns around: most of which are suitable for weddings and LOOOOAAADDDS that your guests will have heard of!! why choose rubbish???????

IIRC, we were told to choose something like an uplifting one to start with, a quieter contemplative one and then a rousing one (like LotD) to end with.

nickelbabe · 08/04/2010 15:09

wouldn't even recommend those Katisha

how about (long list coming)

Gracious Spirit, Holy Ghost (Tune: Charity by J Stainer)
Oh Praise Ye The Lord (Tune: Laudate Dominum by Parry)
All My Hope on God is Founded (Tune: Michael by Herbert Howells)
Guide me O Thou Great Redeemer (Tune: Cwm Rhondda)
Oh Perfect Love (Tunes: O Perfect Love by Barnby; Strength and Stay by Wright; Highwood)
Oh Worship the King, All Glorious Above (Tune : Hanover)
Immortal Love, Forever Full (Tune: Bishopthorpe)
Tell Out, My Soul! The Greatness of the Lord (Tune: Woodlands)
Through all the Changing Scenes of Life (Tune: Wiltshire)
Jesus Shall Reign (Tune: Truro)
Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise (Tune: St Denio by John Roberts)
Praise to the Holiest in The Height (Tune: Gerontius)
Love Divine, All Loves Excelling (Tune: Blaenwern)
Praise my Soul, The King of Heaven (Tune: Lauda Anima by John Goss)
How Great Thou Art (The tune is a swedish folk song)
To God Be The Glory! (Tune: To God Be the Glory)

i don't like all of these, but what a refreshing change!
(and decent rousing easy to sing hymns!)

My cousin had those kind of songs at her wedding (one more step along the world we go etc) because she was a primary teacher anbd they brought back lots of happy memories.

Is that ok with you?

SoupDragon · 08/04/2010 15:13

Oh no, it wasn't the vicar who overruled me.

I think we had "Praise my soul the King of heaven" to start then "Lord of all Hopefulness" and then, oh yes, LotD.

SuSylvester · 08/04/2010 15:16

we had masses
lord of all things
priase my soul
er.... cant remember

who cares tbh is only one day

nickelbabe · 08/04/2010 15:16

bfq that's fine, if the church was full of primary school children.
my ex wanted "we are climbing jesus' laddre (ladder)" because he remembered it from school.
not the reason he's ex!

SD the first 1 was fine.
2nd another overused one, which is a shame because it is lovely
no 3: you poor poor lamb.

i would also like to leap to my own defence a bit and comment that if guests don't want to sing, they won't sing, no matter how well they know the hymn.

i know this from bitter bitter experience as a guest, surrounded by people who don't sing at all, and i'm there singing on my own.

Abundantia · 08/04/2010 15:24

Dh was a choirboy but looks a bit like a nightclub bouncer these days . He sings all the hymns with gusto and it's hilarious to see people's faces when they turn to see where the great voice is coming from and realise it's a Grant Mitchell lookalike.

nickelbabe · 08/04/2010 15:25

FioFio i agree with you.

what is the ommitted verse of the BB hymn, please?
sadly cannot ask my Dad who was in the BB, he has been gone over 2 yrs now.

nickelbabe · 08/04/2010 15:29

see, now, i had a friend who got married in a church because it's her right (or something- i agreed with her reasoning but can't remember it)
anyway, she didn't know any hymns, so she asked me for suggestions and chose some very very good hymns (inc Guide me o thou great redeemer because her uncle is welsh)
and i stood in the congregation and sang very loudly. afterwards people came up to me saying that they were glad i was there because they didn't dare sing until i started. then they felt they could join in.
