to have this as our 1st dance (another wedding thread, oh joy)

DP is insisting on me choosing something for our 1st dance at our wedding (it's in august, so plenty of time to choose).
I have the natural grace and balance of a blind 3-legged hippo on roller skates, so dancing in public does not fill me with glee.

hence I have given him 2 options

  1. this
or
  1. this

ok, so I know I'm being unreasonable, but I am hating this wedding tweeness. does anyone have better ideas for 1st dances - songs that aren't too vomit-inducing, but a wee bit romantic?

4 mins 33 definitely- really catchy

CirrhosisByTheSea · 08/04/2010 00:34

see, this is what annoys me about weddings

If you can't dance, then don't have a 'first dance'. Why would you? Is there any actual reason other than to be the same as everyone else?

Totally agree with the conga idea; if you feel people are expecting something, do that!

skidoodly · 08/04/2010 00:39

Agree with Cirrhos, but for can't substitute don't like to

WhatSheSaid · 08/04/2010 00:51

This is (partly) why I eloped. The thought of having to stand in the middle of a room and dance in front of loads of people is my worst nightmare. I shudder just thinking about it.

I agee, you don't have to have a first dance. It's your wedding. Do what you like.

How about "You're Gorgeous" by Babybird

"Unforgettable" by Nat King Cole

or how about something very traditonal like
"for the love of a princess" from the film Braveheart.... played on the irish bagpipes it sounds amazing. My SIL went down the aisle to this one..... beautiful

Bumbleconfusus · 08/04/2010 02:47

a bit depressing and from eurovision but an amazing song...

nooka · 08/04/2010 03:54

We were planning to have Knight in White Satin (Lol - I was young!) but our (fabulous) band did mostly Beatles songs, and although when we booked them they said oh yes, on the evening they said no, they could only do Lady in Red or something else fairly awful. So we had Lady in Red. Very cringe worthy, and not a song I have ever liked. Pity really, as with a bit more notice we could have chosen one or two really good Beatles songs. To be honest it doesn't hugely matter - I just remember giggling!

charmander · 08/04/2010 04:19

We had .a barn dance so everyone just got on with it. My choice as I don't like dancing. Everyone had a great time

louisnearlythere · 08/04/2010 06:04

cant take my eyes off you, by andy williams - everyone joined us on the dancefloor when it got to the fast bit. Helped my morticfication at dancing in front of everyone!

LadySharrow · 08/04/2010 09:25

Not 'Your Gorgeous' - the lyrics are pretty warped...

Unless your courtship did, indeed, involve moments of car bonnet soft porn, light BDSM and broken promises about representation in the modelling industry, in which case - go for it!

theressomethingaboutmarie · 08/04/2010 09:29

There's a brilliant episode of 'Everybody Loves Raymond' where Robert and Amy get married. Their dance is to 'A Little Less Conversation' by Elvis (the JXL remix). Find it on YouTube and be inspired :-)

ButterPie · 08/04/2010 09:33

We're having "underneath your clothes" by shakira, but I am not happy about dancing in front of everyone. TBH I'm not 100% happy about people looking at me during the wedding, which is one of the reasons we haven't chosen to have a sit down meal in a big room.

StealthPolarBear · 08/04/2010 09:38

you'll have a 'first dance;' whether you want to or not - it'll be the first song the band play. We didnt have one so ours ended up being Johnny B Goode

WitchyWooWoo · 08/04/2010 09:42

dh and i cant dance for figs, so we chose the feelings- fill my little world right up. dh added some spins and people thought we had dancing lessons

Floopy21 · 08/04/2010 09:58

Neither DH or I could dance for toffee, so we enlisted 'The First Dance Company' - they were brilliant. Came to our home, we had three lessons & the lovely teacher taught us how to move without looking like plonkers. We had 'For You Blue' by the Beatles, pretty song. Went really well - never thought it would!

TwentiethCenturyHeffa · 08/04/2010 10:07

We didn't have a first dance because I hated the whole idea of it so much. My DSis and BIL had tried to avoid one too but were forced into it anyway by eager guests and the band so our best man (my BIL) whisked us off outside so we missed the first dance completely while we relaxed outside with a glass of wine, it was lovely.

SalFresco · 08/04/2010 10:07

We had Earth Angel from Back To The Future. It's my favourite film

GeekOfTheWeek · 08/04/2010 10:36

I love the conga idea!

Agingmumoftwins · 08/04/2010 10:46

We didn't have a first dance either, as we both hated the idea of it. Instead we got our siblings up to dance with us, and the floor quickly filled up as everyone else got up and joined up.

Love the conga idea though, wish we'd done that!

cyteen · 08/04/2010 10:52

You have to go with this

DP and I have been through so many first dance songs, shall we or shan't we do it etc. Current front runner is Need Your Love So Bad by Fleetwood Mac, although I may now suggest a first conga instead.

londonmackem · 08/04/2010 10:56

We had Your love is lifting me higher by Jackie Wilson - no bum clenching for us we just twirled and were silly was great!

CheekyVimtoGal · 08/04/2010 10:59

We had Lonestar - Amazed

CheekyVimtoGal · 08/04/2010 11:00

I did want this one Snow Patrol

notso · 08/04/2010 11:06

We stumbled drunkenly danced to that CheekyVimtoGal,

our unofficial dance was DOA by Foo Fighters, I pogoed until my tiara fell off

mangoandlime · 08/04/2010 11:10

First dances are cringe-making.
