Whilst shopping in town yesterday a woman and her little girl about 4/5 were walking in front of us when the girl got distracted and got left behind the woman called out Chardonnay, Chardonnay come here now, i looked at DH with a did i hear right look and he just smiled at me and nodded

Seriously, i thought it was an urban myth, do people actually call their children this?(shocked)

I hope she had had one to many when she thought of this name otherwise there is no excuse really!!

Yabu and frankly rather nasty.

usualsuspect · 29/03/2010 19:51

I'm sure your children have perfectly lovely names and

LisaD1 · 29/03/2010 19:51

And? What's the worst that could happen? She could grow up into a horrible, judgemental, mumsnet poster?

Hullygully · 29/03/2010 19:51

You are a right old snobbypants. My two nieces are Rioha and Merlo, I suppose you think that's funny too?

TrowelAndError · 29/03/2010 19:52

It isn't a name I would choose, but I expect Chardonnay's mother would think exactly the same about my daughter's poncetastic name.

Best not to judge, lest we be judged.

it's a terrible name

you'll get nothing but condemnation from the holier-than-thou masses though

being judgemental is not acceptable, until it is and only the mumsnet form of judgemental will do

(adopts breathy, sexy voice) This is not judgemental, this is Mumsnet judgemental

scottishmummy · 29/03/2010 19:59

misplaced pity and judgemental.mmm you are nice

Morloth · 29/03/2010 20:07

Dunno if YABU or not. Did she use a hard "C" at the start?

StephysFamous · 29/03/2010 20:11

YABU, it would be rather hilarious if someone was to read this and have that name of a kid with that name.

The chavs have got to call their kids something.

CheerfulYank · 29/03/2010 20:23

Bad name, but none of your business on the whole.

I favor names like Sam, Will, Elizabeth, etc, but I've got friends who like a little more...shall we say flair? ;) Whatever, as long as you're not telling me what to name my children, I'll stay out of your business.

Hulababy · 29/03/2010 20:24

We have a Lambrini at school; along the same lines I guess.

usualsuspect · 29/03/2010 20:27

Makes a nice change from all the little Herberts/Ethels and Alberts

chegirlWILLbeserene · 29/03/2010 20:48

There is a MNs with a child with this name. If I remember rightly the child is deceased. Not suprisingly (even if it is illogical) she finds these sort of comments very upsetting.

Why on earth would you feel pity for a child just because they have a name you think is common?

There are lots of names beloved by the more affluent classes that most people I know [round here] would think are cruel and designed to get your kid beaten up in the playground.

And they would be just as silly as you.

FabIsGettingThere · 29/03/2010 20:51

I thought this was going to be about something serious. Like a child really was being mistreated.

GrendelsMum · 29/03/2010 20:51

I think it's rather a pretty name, actually. And I'm as posh and snobby as they come.

But then just this lunchtime I was listening to a radio programme about Shiraz in Iran (??) and thinking 'what a pretty name for a girl'.

sparkle12mar08 · 29/03/2010 21:16

We have a Cruz in my son's nursery. Awful.

youremindmeofthebabe · 29/03/2010 21:19

We used to have a patient called Candida at the last place I worked.

ElleBing · 29/03/2010 21:21

It's a terrible name. If there was a Chardonnay in my DSs' class at school, I'd tell him to avoid
