Whilst shopping in town yesterday a woman and her little girl about 4/5 were walking in front of us when the girl got distracted and got left behind the woman called out Chardonnay, Chardonnay come here now, i looked at DH with a did i hear right look and he just smiled at me and nodded

Seriously, i thought it was an urban myth, do people actually call their children this?(shocked)

I hope she had had one to many when she thought of this name otherwise there is no excuse really!!

OP posts:
JackRabbitBauer · 29/03/2010 22:20

Thread that is, not the name. The name is just different, deal with it.

ToccataAndFudge · 29/03/2010 22:21

and they are lovely lovely children - although Ella is entwine in a love war with some of the other girls at school as to who is going to marry my DS2 (she says she has the biggest claim as they've known each other since they were born)

JackRabbitBauer · 29/03/2010 22:31

I know a Charlie and Lola. Cute!

redroof · 29/03/2010 22:32

FACT: It is an urban myth Edwina Currie's children are named Sam and Ella.

rastababi · 29/03/2010 22:39

YABU and TBH it's none of your business.

JackRabbitBauer I've often wondered if there are siblings called Charlie and Lola, very cute!

annielouisa · 29/03/2010 23:57

I remember a brother and sister called Sam and Ella at a pre school I worked at. My DD1 and DD2 were at school with a Shoshanna, Candida and Jasmine (3 sisters). I must admit I was expecting the post to be about some form of cruelty to the LO that didn't just involve having a Footballers Wives name.

MrsFullyautomatix · 30/03/2010 00:05

There are some right proper horrible people on this board. How can you express opinions on the name of somebody elses child?

YES, my DD1 name is Mercedes and I hate all the people out there who, dare I say it, label such names as chavish. I hate it. I liked the name when I herd it and so I decided to name my child that way. It is nobody elses business.

SOrry, had a real bad day today and some posts are making me angry.

MillyR · 30/03/2010 00:05

I know 5 KS1 Mabels.

NoahAndTheWhale · 30/03/2010 00:09

There was a Candida in my year at school. She was known as Candy.

ToccataAndFudge · 30/03/2010 00:11

Noah - same here - she was one of twins Claire and Candida (known as Candy)

echt · 30/03/2010 05:02

I don't get it, Mrs FA; why can't people express their opinions about a child's name on these boards? It's not as if they're in the face of the parents, which would be rude.
You're confusing the right to express an opinion with expressing it rudely. I hope.

JackRabbitBauer · 30/03/2010 08:07

You're confusing the right to express an opinion with expressing it rudely.

So are other posters on here.

There is a way of saying 'I would not choose this name fo rmy child' without the accompanying
'Ooh, aren't the common, aren't we better than them'

I think it's the title saying the OP felt sorry for the girl for her name? You can't tell me that's not snobbish and rude? To pity someone for their name?

BouncingTurtle · 30/03/2010 08:32

Mercedes is a proper name - it is Spanish, and it means Grace!

In fact the Mercedes in Mercedes-Benz came from an Austrian businessman, whose daughter was called Mercedes, and so Daimler-Benz was renamed Mercedes-Benz!
see here for a more detailed explanation

Candida has always been a girl's name, meaning white.

Chardonnay is not a name that I would pick, but to feel sorry for a girl called it is rather sneering, IMO. What matter what she is called as long as she is loved?

upahill · 30/03/2010 08:37

I was working with teenage girls about 3 weeks ago and one of them was called Chardonnay. A lovely polite teenage girl. Did excatly what was expected of her and caused no problems. I am happy to give her a reference for college.

The point of this post is......?

Bucharest · 30/03/2010 08:42

OP- you posted in the wrong topic my love. Had you posted in Names, with the title "what's your opinion on Chardonnay" you'd have got the answers you were expecting.

I agree with Riven - its only a name and when she grows up if she doesnt like it she can change it.

Save your pity for children who have a condition they cant changef

AntoinetteOuradi · 30/03/2010 09:14

Are you all so sanctimonious in real life?

posieparker · 30/03/2010 09:31

Holy Moley, I see that 'Mabel' is not unusual.....it is here and it has never made the top 100 names list, so not too usual and as my baby is Artemus I am guessing I can still claim that I pick unusual names, his middle name is Somerset....so ner ner na na ner!

JackRabbitBauer · 30/03/2010 10:05

Antoinette, are you confusing sanctimonious with not being nasty?

l39 · 30/03/2010 11:07

'Candy' would cause me to wince a bit but then am old. Her contemporaries have probably never seen 'Highlander'.

What's wrong with Jasmine?

shivster1980 · 30/03/2010 11:20

gillhugh · 30/03/2010 11:31

my niece is called Chardonnay and she loves it she is 10 now and the name really suits her. I hate snobby people that look down there nose at childrens names. there are alot of names that i dont like but i would never judge someone by there name choice.

My sister is not a chav even if she did call her daughter that.
