befor you flame me, I am 100% supportive of our troops(my nephew inlaw has just got abck) but to suggest that no one can moan or strike about thier job, because the soldiers are having it worst seems..........silly, of course they are, but ................... If you work for British Airways, Royal Mail or National Rail and have been or are going on strike, next time you see a soldier who's returned from Afghanistan make sure you tell him/her about your awful working conditions, poor uniform and low pay!! Let me know how you get on . . . . Copy and Paste to your status If you feel they should stop Moaning

I'm sick to death of "post this to your status" cack too and think I may have scuppered a recent bit of this nonsense (by asking when the "up the arse" commentator would be along. I chose my recipient carefully and much spluttering has resulted.

To get back to "heroes", I'm not going to support an unwinnable war that we shouldn't even be fighting. Regardless.

Gay40 · 29/03/2010 08:56

Britfish, it is not about the support of the public, it is about working conditions. There is little point in paying train drivers 60k if they have to work long shifts that are dangerous to their health and ultimately dangerous to the public. Likewise if there are not enough staff to maintain the railways safely - do you not think these things are important?

It is not train drivers who are making decisions about working practices that threaten the public's safety.

SawneyBeane · 29/03/2010 09:02

Facebook is a pile of wank.
What do you expect?

tethersend · 29/03/2010 09:03

groundhogs, you make a hugely patronising assertion that those who support the right to strike do not inhabit the 'Real World'.

Is this a world you are in charge of, or can anyone join? Actually, on second thoughts I prefer the world I inhabit where the rights of workers mean something.

MamaLazarou · 29/03/2010 09:16

YANBU. I saw this this morning and it left a very unpleasant taste in my mouth. So everyone who's not a soldier should shut up about their pay and conditions because they are not soldiers? Ridiculous assertion.

LtEveDallas · 29/03/2010 09:21

Ohh I'm a hired killer (thanks (ElleBing) ) I can't wait to put that on my next CV.

It is a pointless statement - but if you dont like it then just ignore it. I can't see why anyone is getting worked up about it.

I've noticed this a lot on my FB (probably because most of my FB friends are 'hired killers' or their spouses). I choose not to copy it because it isn't comparable (even if most BA crew are paid more than the average soldier - ohh to have their hardships lol) and most soldiers choose to do it through pride, it's not just a job to them.

I think its a rotten thing to do to the public though, so the message is two pronged isn't it - highlights the support that some feel towards our Forces and takes a swipe at those who are 'punishing' the public because they want more cash (simplistic I know)

Oh and by the way BritFish - Bollocks to your and considering i meet far more young men in the army who join to "blow up some paki's" than wanting a well trained well paid job...you are talking shite and I dont believe you.

I have worked surrounded by soliders day in day out for 21 years. I have worked with recruits, cadets, trained soldiers and those just about to leave and I have NEVER heard any one of them saying something so crass.

sixlostmonkeys · 29/03/2010 09:41

I saw the same FB thing last and just shook my head.
Don't soldiers (past and present) fight so that we keep our right to fredom etc and the right to strike if we have opinions about our conditions? (all badly worded due to lack of coffee, but hope you get what I mean)

posieparker · 29/03/2010 09:45

I hate all of those fb status especially the 'I'm a nurse, a carer, a chef....blah blah yes I'm a mother....'

CirrhosisByTheSea · 29/03/2010 10:02

agree with you tethersend. It never fails to amaze me that people so willingly throw away the one tiny bit of power and choice they do have - to withdraw labour. How do people think we got rights in the first place - because lovely fluffy employers skipped in and gave them to us all wrapped up in an 'ickle bow?

Striking etc is a right we all need to protect fiercely.

MinnieMalone · 29/03/2010 10:04

Stupid comparison.
Agree with Cirrhosis and tethersend.

Beveridge · 29/03/2010 10:08

If you're public sector you strike because you want to protect the pay and conditions you have and because you don't have the option to just bail out to another company to pay you more to do the same job.

If public sectors such as the NHS, police and teachers worked to rule (e.g only did their contracted hours and duties) this country would grind to a halt in a matter of hours. And let's face it, you don't work in the public sector to make your fortune but you do expect the terms and conditions you originally agreed to to be maintained.

Private sector employment is different but the decision to strike is not one that is taken lightly, the union needs to be sure that the company can accommodate their demands without going bust or nobody wins.

People will of course have differences of opinion about whether BA can afford to keep the same pay and conditions for their staff without going to the wall but surely you can't berate union members for exercising a basic democratic right?

Tony Benn made the point a few years ago that trade union powers are virtually the same as they were a century ago, due to the Conservatives in the 80s. Capitalism is a balance between the demands of the consumer, employer and employee - if you have a no-strike policy as a group of workers you WILL be walked all over, unless you are in a , rare, highly skilled job that is particularly in demand.

Quite frankly, I don't envy BA staff anyway -having to deal with the General Public in a small confined space for hours at a time? No thanks!

Dave59r · 29/03/2010 10:42

HarderToKidnap, Land Mine casualties actually get a comparitively huge amount of help because of the 'Diana effect'....many limbless people in these countries from many different causes without help, but Land Mines casualties get buried in the rush.

But back to the subject in hand: FACE BOOK IS A LOAD OF C*!

There....thats better.....

justthisonce · 29/03/2010 10:53

LtEveDallas: You have worked surrounded by soliders day in day out for 21 years and have worked with recruits, cadets, trained soldiers and those just about to leave and have NEVER heard any one of them saying something so crass?

You should maybe take a little look aroung fb then, because I just copied this off of a friend of a friends OPEN profile.

Employer: HM Forces (British Army)
Position:Infantry Soldier
Length of time:April 2008 - Present
Location:Catterick, United Kingdom
Description:To Kill People in Iraq and to protect the paki's in this fucking country.

It is very, very commonly bandied about.
I am an ex soldiers wife btw, and unfortunately have heard it with my own ears too.

probonbon · 29/03/2010 11:01

"Well said hardertokidnap!!! No one conscripted them into the f*cking army. If you don't want to get blown up, don't bloody join up.
I'm sick to the back teeth of support the troops statuses."

Moaner, whinger, whiner, complainer. Horrible. Anyone who thinks like this hasn't half a brain cell.

Would you like to be conscripted? That's what could happen. Do you enjoy the fact that many young men and women join up rather than spend years on the dole? That's what does happen. Will you use the right to vote this year? Appalling as it may seem to you, this is the bottom line of what is being protected.

Was that just random abuse wandering its way around your empty head or did you actually think before you typed it?

probonbon · 29/03/2010 11:05

And I don't think they should be in Iraq -- but it's just pissy to read that kind of ignorant comment.

However, free speech and all that. Enjoy it. Many people have paid for it, not that you give a shit.

5inthebed · 29/03/2010 11:06

I nearly started a post with exactly the same FB status.

I hate all these "copy & paste" status ones, so annoying and normally one track minded.

CarmenSanDiego · 29/03/2010 11:08

YANBU. I already argued with a friend of mine who had it.

It's a ridiculous statement. We're talking about a private organisation. If you don't like people striking, then don't fly with BA. Vote with your feet.

What on earth have the troops got to do with anything? You sign up for a job, you get paid to do it, if you're unhappy with the conditions you protest them in whatever legal way you can.

As has been said, there is always someone worse off.

ChickensHaveSinisterMotives · 29/03/2010 11:10

I don't like this status spam, but I have a friend on my list whose husband is currently in Afghanistan and she's 7 months pregnant. If giving this kind of 'support' helps her get through the day, I have no problem with it tbh.

fluffles · 29/03/2010 11:29

i find it amusing how many people are saying 'facebook is bollocks' or similar - facebook links up FRIENDS, if the people you are linked with on facebook are crass or offensive or persist in posting things you don't agree with or piss you off, then you need to look at your FRIENDS list.

personally if i get too many updates that annoy me from someone i knew at school or don't know that well then i remove them from my fb.

SuSylvester · 29/03/2010 11:31

oh fgs facebook is wank
get a life

LtEveDallas · 29/03/2010 11:33

justthisonce - considering that your 'friend of a friend' joined the Army as Iraq was closing - all the Brits were leaving and hostilites were at an end I find it 'strange' he would be posting about killing Iraqis......bit of a Walter Mitty methinks?

No, I've NEVER heard a soldier say something so crass - For one, if they were caught saying it it's a swift charge and boot out - we DO NOT tolerate racism these days. In fact we have a specific Militrary Training Test on Equality and Diversity that ALL military have to complete - and more often the further you get in rank.

Strange that two people NOT in the forces can post about racism IN the Forces as if it is widespread but someone at the coal face cant......very, very commonly bandied about..what, by one person??

chegirlWILLbeserene · 29/03/2010 11:41

I dont like it. I think its simplistic and meaningless.

I support the right to strike. Sometimes its the only way. I am not sure it is at the moment but we must protect worker's rights. They were hard won. The fact they were won means that even the armed forces can comment on conditions and pay now.

My OH is a GW1 vet. I think he is a hero. I think he was treated like crap.

But just being in the armed forces doesnt make you a wonderful human being anymore than being a nurse makes you an angel, being a doctor makes you a God or being a priest makes you the epitome of trustworthiness.

bintofbohemia · 29/03/2010 11:46

YANBU - totally flawed logic. Or lack of logic...
