SAW themed ride at Thorpe park. WTF?

I am a pretty open minded person...BUT, to have a ride based on that lovely kiddy friendly film SAW, at Thorpe Park? I just think its so inappropriate to associate a torture porn horror film with a theme park aimed at children, I am amazed they got away with it. anyway....

vile

There was a thread about it when it first opened IIRC.

I don't like the idea of it TBH. [old prude emoticon]

flameproofsuit · 27/03/2010 21:33

Never seen/heard f SAW but just looked at it on wiki.

Sounds gross.

NBU!

Kaloki · 28/03/2010 00:15

Not all the rides are aimed at kids though are they? Hence the height restrictions.

Helena1964 · 28/03/2010 18:08

It's just another indication of how desensitized society has become. I've never seen SAW, never want to, and wish I could gather up every existing copy of the film in the world, and burn each one. And I'm appalled that there would be a SAW-themed ride in a park.I thought it was insensitive enough when I saw a Titanic-themed ride in a park (a slide-like contraption meant to portray the slanting deck as the Titanic broke in two, before taking its final plunge into the Atlantic-obviously not fun for the people who slid off the real thing)but that's nothing cmpared to a SAW ride. I'm afraid to ask for details of the ride, and will hurry off this thread before someone mentions it!

YANBU, it is sick.

mangoandlime · 28/03/2010 18:44

I used to go to Thorpe Park lots in the 80s and the most exciting ride then was a huge darkened tent with a huge screen showing a rollercoaster ride, the whole audience would sway along with the motion, it was ace! I was thinking of going again but I will be avoiding it now on principle.

porcamiseria · 29/03/2010 10:06

I am seriusly inclined to write to their MD, I am a happy capitalist but would you get a 18 reg sex film associated with a theme park, NO, but seemingly if its violent, its OK!

and their website says

It's a bit extreme for under 12?s. We suggest you stay clear!

I despair

had this conversation just yesterday with DH. Same conclusion. Not right at all.

GlastonburyGoddess · 29/03/2010 10:12

I (as someone who owns all 6 saw dvds) have no objection as such to the ride. What I do have an objection to though is the Real set saw walk through thing, surely if the dvd is classified as 18 so should that be.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 29/03/2010 10:16

I agree - I had a look at Thorpe Park's website, and can't understand why this ride has to be Saw themed? I have watched a couple of excerpts of Saw films, and a friend has watched them all and described the plots to me, and I found them sickening.

The ride itself sounds scary and exciting - the mechanics of it, if you see what I mean, and if they had wanted to make it scarier, I'm sure they could have thought of plenty of ideas without resorting to what porcamiseria correctly describes as torture porn.

If ever there was a need for a cats-bum mouth emoticon, this is it!

GlastonburyGoddess · 29/03/2010 10:21

Sorry being a bit thick here, but why the references to porn?

LIZS · 29/03/2010 10:25

I tis horrid but didn't the rollercoatser one open last year and they've added another Saw "attraction" this ? Thorpe Park hasn't been particularly below-teenage friendly for several years.

Tiredmumno1 · 29/03/2010 10:29

I wondered that aswell glastonbury. I think all the saw films were great, they always kept me on the edge of my seat. I dont see the harm having a ride based on it as long as it was for over 18's only. Its only a fad they will get bored with it eventually and change the ride to something else anyway.

ShadeofViolet · 29/03/2010 10:29

Thorpe Park is aaimed at teenagers though isnt it.

fluffles · 29/03/2010 10:32

to be honest i'm not sure how 'child' friendly thorpe park is anyway - last time i was there was about five years ago but it struck me as more aimed towards 16yr olds up to young adults (21ish) and not really at the under 16s much at all.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 29/03/2010 10:40

The type of film that Saw is, like hostel etc, is a genre known as 'torture porn'.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 29/03/2010 10:42

Torture porn is a phrase sometimes used to refer to films of the 'Splatter' genre, that use torture, sadism, mutilation and sadism (paraphrased from Wikipedia).

Cloudbase · 29/03/2010 11:00

'It's a bit extreme for U12's'????????

Yuk yuk and yuk - I have seen SAW 1 and 2 - didn't really want to watch the rest - but don't really see how you can base a ride on it without it being well above and beyond anything a kid or even a young teenager should go on?

Unless it's just that weird tin man on the bike thing - and I thought that was creepy!!

porcamiseria · 29/03/2010 11:02

Thorpe Park does want to attract kids (as well as teens) their website promotes buggy hire, toddler care and school trips

whats next, a rice crispies.Hostel tie in?

OP posts:
PuppyMonkey · 29/03/2010 11:12

Tbh, even if it is aimed at over 18s or whatever, is it really the sort of thing you want to be basing a ride on? Serial killing murderers etc?? Shall we have a ride based on Silence of the Lambs too?

Slartybartfast · 29/03/2010 11:18

but due to height restrictions an under 12 couldnt get on most of the rides anyway.

Slartybartfast · 29/03/2010 11:19

and SAW isnt a new ride.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 29/03/2010 11:24

I can understand Thorpe Park wanting to make a sort of grown-up scare ride, like a ghost train only far more so - but I'm sure it could be done without having to refer to the Saw films.

Slartybartfast - did your dh and dc tell you what actual Saw references the ride uses? I couldn't find details on the Thorpe Park website - for obvious reasons, I guess - they want you to go on the ride to find out what it's actually about, not read the website.

Kaloki · 29/03/2010 11:26

They have kids rides, they have adult rides the trick is not to get the two confused

Slartybartfast · 29/03/2010 11:26

we looked it up on you tube, afterwards, looks pretty scarey, and it was scarey,
just a giant saw as far as i can remember, or lots of giant saws.
