my dd is 3,and came home with her 1st report.the first thing was our surname was spelt incorrectly "mr and mrs galagher"! who spells gallagher with 1 L?

then, inside, there were several glaring grammatical spelling errors.

so,what do you think?is it arsey if i point them all out?

they're supposed to be teaching my child the basics...and yet they can't even spell simple words like,quiet...and use tense correctly

Does your keyboard not do capital letters?

skihorse · 26/03/2010 12:43

Has the person "teaching" your child in posession of a teaching degree or PGCE? Or are they a low-paid childminder?

I think if your child were at school and she was expected to produce written work, you'd have an excellent point - but she's 3, she's still sticking paint in her ears.

Mouseface · 26/03/2010 12:43

YANBU - The amount of spolling, whoops , spelling mistakes in my DD report were shocking!!! I did mention it to her teacher and she apologised saying she hadn't spell checked it before it was printed?!!

Iklboo · 26/03/2010 12:43

If the report was negative then I'd be tempted to send it back.

mumblechum · 26/03/2010 12:44

It is tempting but I've always resisted the temptation. Surely if your dd is only 3, she's not actually at school yet and is probably being cared for by non-teachers?

If it was an actual school report then I might consider it.

My DS came home with a report once reffering to him as a her!

skihorse · 26/03/2010 12:44

Ack shoite. I've shot myself in the foot with my own frightful grammar.

bibbitybobbityhat · 26/03/2010 12:44

It is arsey.

I would address your concerns in an email to the teacher, rather than just return the report with the errors highlighted.

When you send your email, you might like to know that you should leave a space after a comma and two spaces after a full stop. The first letter after a full stop is always a capital.

mumblechum · 26/03/2010 12:46

DS's yr 10 report referred to"Katherine is a pleasant girl and ......."

I didn't realise my 6foot 2 son had an alias!

God only knows what Katherine's report said....

Iklboo · 26/03/2010 12:46

DS's school newsletters are always full of errors. Having spent all day at work looking for and correcting errors I have to force myself to let it slide

MIFLAW · 26/03/2010 12:46

One space after a full stop is standard these days.

Amandoh · 26/03/2010 12:48

I've had reports home like that.

Don't correct the errors and send it back as it won't do your daughter any favours with her teachers.

It might be worth ringing the office and saying that your name is spelt incorrectly and could they check their records. Obviously you'll have had letters home already and know that they've got it right but at least it'll highlight the problem on the report without it looking like you're complaining.

I'd imagine the teacher concerned was up into the early hours writing the reports hence the mistakes. Let it go this time but hold onto the report incase it happens again. If it happens twice then there's a problem.

OrmRenewed · 26/03/2010 12:49

DS#1's tutor has just had to write 170 reports. Do you know what? As long as the contents of the report are accurate and helpful I don't really care how it is spelt. To be entirely frank I am impressed he isn't sitting in a corner rocking gently let alone failing to parse a sentence correctly.

Send it back 'marked' if you want a really stinking relationship with your child's teacher from now on.

bibbitybobbityhat · 26/03/2010 12:52

Two spaces looks so much nicer.

Pennies · 26/03/2010 12:55

As there are some "glaring grammatical errors" in you own OP I can't help but think that the pot is calling the kettle black.

hana · 26/03/2010 12:55

I would imagine that the person writing the report is not actually a fully qualified teacher but rather a preschool worker/leader - without a formal teaching qualification

doesn't make it ok of course

and of course you can't send it back corrected in red pen - terribly smug

moomaa · 26/03/2010 13:00

There are spelling mistakes and grammer errors on written reports from DS's preschool but I really don't care. It is a preschool and it's much more important that they are kind to him and interact well with him. Plus preschool workers don't exactly get paid a lot.

Once I was there and one of the workers was reading a story to some children and got stuck on a fairly simple word so she asked me what it was. I told her and thought that it was a good example to the children of how to ask for help if you are stuck.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 26/03/2010 13:03

It is arsey

What bibbity said

Poor spelling gets on my nerves too, but think how you would fell if someone did the same to you ...

MathsMadMummy · 26/03/2010 13:06

Oooh I'd be tempted but probably wouldn't. Really wanted to complain about DSDs' reports through Juniors though - they're twins and had EXACTLY the same reports for everything except literacy/numeracy... WTF, they didn't even have the same teacher!

Jamieandhismagictorch · 26/03/2010 13:06

Also, at 3, the "basics" are : learning to share, to put your coat and shoes on, to hold a crayon, etc etc

BessieBoots · 26/03/2010 13:06

Two spaces after a full stop? Two? Are you mad?

No wonder the world is running out of space with all the reckless space bar use. I think it's disgusting.

bibbitybobbityhat · 26/03/2010 13:09

My mum (secretary) used to put 3!

Jamieandhismagictorch · 26/03/2010 13:09

Bessie, I'd leave a space before your question marks too. Wanton, I am. Wanton.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 26/03/2010 13:10

Aaaaaargh feel, not fell
