my dd is 3,and came home with her 1st report.the first thing was our surname was spelt incorrectly "mr and mrs galagher"! who spells gallagher with 1 L?

then, inside, there were several glaring grammatical spelling errors.

so,what do you think?is it arsey if i point them all out?

they're supposed to be teaching my child the basics...and yet they can't even spell simple words like,quiet...and use tense correctly

i did see a van this morning with a sign on the side that said "No Job to Small" i thought my eyes were burning!
Poor Small, though, no one will touch him...

No, you cannot start a sentence with But, unless you mean The consequence of the aciton was....
as in "But for a nail the horse was lost" (I knwo the proper phrase was "for the want of a nail..." but i can't think of an example!)

and Because needs to be a hanger as well: you can't use it if you're only making a clause:
" But we do seem to get fixated on reading and writing." is wrong because it's a phrase; part of a sentence, not a full sentence.
"Because those really are important skills to help that age group learn about the world", is also wrong for that reason.

If you were to say, "Because those skills are important, we must learn them at an early age", then that's fine, because you're qualifying your because later on.

I raised this issue with my DD's form teacher at parents' evening - our weekly newsletter (written by the Y1 teachers) is always punctuated incorrectly. I was trying to point out in as polite a manner as possible that while I recognise I am a pedant in these matters, I would still expect a primary school teacher to be able to use the apostrophe correctly.

I don't think I'll be on her Christmas card list however...

If you care more about looking clever than not looking like a total arsehole then go ahead.

RunningOutOfNames · 29/03/2010 14:23

My DD's report said she had a staring role in the school play!

LongtimeinBrussels !

LongtimeinBrussels · 31/03/2010 12:25

And you even put in the Belgian space after the exclamation mark Smithagain.

(Waits for Smithagain to tell her you shouldn't start sentences with and.)

Smithagain · 01/04/2010 18:23

You shouldn't start ...

Nah, it's the weekend. I can't be bothered.

squimlet · 01/04/2010 18:40

I will admit to circling the word 'speling' in the title 'spelling test' and putting an exclamation mark next to it and sending it back to dd's school. Her teacher actually wrote an apologetic note next to it.

Earthstar · 01/04/2010 18:47

You are being totally unreasonable and sending it back would be highly patronising in my view.

People looking after 3 year olds do not need to be good at spelling.

The weekend Smithagain? It's only Friday tomorrow. Although I guess over in the UK you have tomorrow off .

Smithagain · 01/04/2010 22:45

Oh yes! The best weekend of the year - four days long! Mind you, some sunny weather would help make the best of it.

bossyboop · 02/04/2010 10:51

If it was negative then yes I would, but its a bit petty. I would keep it handy and if you have any bother with the teachers in the future I would whip it out straight away!

beanlet · 04/04/2010 16:06

The rule used to be two spaces on a manual typewriter (how I woz brung up) and I guess probably earlier computer models maybe too but because computers now automatically "adjust" spacing after full stops, you only need to type one space. So both are correct, depending upon how old you are (and whether you had to learn touch typing at school/secretarial college). . .

As for correcting your DC's teacher's grammar and spelling, YABU. It's super patronising, and all of us make mistakes from time to time, especially when we're tired -- and your post is hardly a model of perfection. You will just make her dislike you. Not a good move where your DC is concerned.
