for the love of all that is sane in his world how can a graphic description of an abortion be appropriate viewing at 7.40pm?

I am not easily able.

But I am somewhat surprised at what I have just overheard.

oh my fucking fucking god.

I can live with drugs, incest, murder, lies, bed hopping, alcoholism and religios sects but

YANBU

QuinnFebray · 25/03/2010 19:45

oh christ does this make me one of those types who write to the radio times?

and if i think that murder and incest is fine viewing for 7.30 wtf am i talking about.

most of the shite spouted on EE is not fine viewing at 7.30.

it's eastenders. most of it is unsuitable for 7.30pm

siblingrivalryisrelative · 25/03/2010 19:47

LOL well I agree with you but only because it's something too close for comfort for me.

I guess some people would be upset by the drugs, incest and murder if it was something relative to them if that makes sense

lolapoppins · 25/03/2010 19:49

Blimey. Am shocked too.

Have it on in the background for the first time in years. It has reminded me why I don't spend my evenings watching the soaps. Utter crap. I know people who talk about thier young kids loving eastenders. Madness.

BitOfFun · 25/03/2010 19:51

I don't watch soaps, but I would have though that Eastenders is unsuitable viewing for kids. All that shouting, urgh.

BritFish · 25/03/2010 19:51

have you people SEEN Hollyoaks?
i dont let my DC's [17&19] watch it!

okay, thats because it's crap but still....

QuinnFebray · 25/03/2010 19:51

i think usually the drugs / murder / sex is done from a distance - except when phil slips and breaks stuff again.

that was just a bit too graphic i think.

if a character was miscarrying she would be dramatically blue lighted to hospital, writhing in agony and i'm fairly sure there would be discussions about what the foetus would look like.

OP posts:
QuinnFebray · 25/03/2010 19:53

sorry - would not be discussions

usually its cartoon shite rathr than a bit more realistic shite.

It was not graphic.

QuinnFebray · 25/03/2010 20:05

it could have been worse it's true. but too much detail for 7.30 i think.

OP posts:
wannaBe · 25/03/2010 20:07

who had an abortion?

And what exactly did the description say?

Fwiw I don't think that eastenders is appropriate viewing for children anyway.

FabIsGettingThere · 25/03/2010 20:08

Too much detail for who? Children? Well EE isn't really for kids anyway is it?

She was told she would bleed and pass a foetus which would be the size of a blood clot.

Do you really think that was graphic?

wannaBe · 25/03/2010 20:12

Tbh, most children of secondary age will know what an abortion is anyway.

And children younger than that - tbh it will go over their heads.

My mum had an abortion when I was seven, and all I knew was that they would be taking the baby away - the reality of what it involves didn't occur until I was much older.

posieparker · 25/03/2010 20:13

I don;t get the fuss, I haven't seen it but can't imagine anyone watching EE would be particularly shocked by abortion, ffs they've had domestic violence suicide, death, murder, HIV... all things that are real life and very relevant but a leetle too sensitive for some.

Who would be watching that we would have to worry about?

BritFish · 25/03/2010 20:18

okay, Eastenders isnt for kids so kids shouldnt be watching it, if you're old enough to watch it you're old enough to know what an abortion is.
and i dont think thats graphic, lets face it, the reality is a lot grimmer than that.

AnyFucker · 25/03/2010 20:19

I would rather EE depicted abortion as a very difficult, very physical and emotional experience to go through

I would have been more {shock} if Lucy was just given a couple of tablets and the next day was back in her school uniform, talking about snogging boys and having a cuppa in Kaf's caff

ruddynorah · 25/03/2010 20:22

i thought it was handled well. lucy asked the questions most people her age would ask, i'd have thought. if i had a teenager i'd think it suitable viewing. like others have said, i wasn't allowed to watch soaps as a child. i even remember being given permission to watch neighbours!

BitOfFun · 25/03/2010 20:34

I see what you mean, Anyfucker. But they tend to gloss over any pregnancies in soapland once the baby is born, which is unrealistic too. You don't hear much about the difficulties of looking after babies, I don't think. Didn't Tracy Barlow go upstairs to do her homework for ten years?

monoid · 25/03/2010 20:35

I thought it was quite good initially, showing that abortions aren't an easy way out and thought it was sending out an important message... until Lucy had, apparently, had a full recovery by the end of the episode (both physically and emotionally)
Although, who knows what is to come tomorrow...

messymissy · 25/03/2010 20:41

agree monoid - it did show it wasnt easy, was painful emotional and physically and didnt gloss over the realities - such as the heavy bleeding and what it would look like, they even had Lucy asking jane for more pads.

but ... by the end of the episode - a few hours after the visit to the clinic in telly time - she was shown as right as rain eating chocolates talking about the school prom.

If they want to be realistic they will show the emotional fallout that would naturally ensue.

have always been surprised as to what plot lines ee is allowed to show / think suitable before the watershed.

AnyFucker · 25/03/2010 20:45

oh yes, a lot of babies get locked in cupboards for 15 years, in Soapland

I didn't actually watch until the end of the episode (not an EE fan...I always want to strangle Stacey's mum)...am not really surprised Lucy made an apparent full recovery

I thought the bit at the clinic was ok, though

ruddynorah · 25/03/2010 20:48

wasn't the prom talk just her trying to see the positive? i assume there will be some fall out, especially when jane finds out.
