to ditch my dyson and never buy another hoover ever?

My dyson doesn't suck anymore. Have cleaned the filters, checked for blockages etc etc. Am fed up.

Was looking to replace, but I don't think I want another dyson, but wouldn't want to go back to a hoover with bags.

AIBU to never buy another hoover, and just use a broom to sweep, folloed by mopping? We only have hard floors. DO I need another hoover or am IBU and slatternly to even think about not replacing?

I like hoovering my wood floors, but that is only because I am shit at sweeping and lazy.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 25/03/2010 13:27

Vacuum cleaners are for carpets; you only have hard floors, it's a no-brainer.

ErnestTheBavarian · 25/03/2010 13:38

oh really? I've just never been without a hoover before, but I prefer to sweep anyway, lighter and quieter and quicker, but then I wonder if it is acceptable. Don't know anyone who doesn't have a hoover

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 25/03/2010 13:39

I don't see why it wouldn't be "acceptable" - acceptable to whom?

ilovehimreallyido · 25/03/2010 13:52

I used to live in a house with wood and tile floors, and I never hoovered. I had a dust-collecting thingy, like a mop but didn't need water, and it took me about 10 minutes to do all the floors with that. I only mopped about twice a month (except the kitchen, obvs)

umf · 25/03/2010 14:12

A static mop, that's what you want. A nice swivvly one. With two different detachable heads, one for dry mopping and one for a bit of water.

DH used to work as a cleaner in a hospital in Sweden, where they're all terribly hygienic. So he's in charge of buying our cleaning equipment. You can get them online, but I'm afraid I don't know the site.

(Tho we do actually have a hoover too, especially for Christmas tree needles.)

ErnestTheBavarian · 25/03/2010 14:13

OLKN I dunno, Kim and Aggie? umf, good idea about static mop, will try to find out. Feel less weird and stinky now I've asked. WIll happily not replace my dyson at all then

OP posts:
OldLadyKnowsNothing · 25/03/2010 14:15

Lol @ "Kim and Aggie" not approving - I reckon they'd agree you don't need a vacuum.

umf · 25/03/2010 14:15

I mean you can get mops online, not hygienic Swedes, obviously...

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 25/03/2010 14:15

Damn...

GetOrfMoiLand · 25/03/2010 14:19

This is what I do.

I don't have any carpet and I loathe and detest my Dyson. So I refuse to use it. So I sweep and mop instead.

I do have a problem that some dust gets into the rather large cracks between my floorboards, so I get DP or DD to hoover the house about once a month. But daily sweeping and mopping works aside from that. I think if you don't have gappy boards you would be fine without a hoover.

DP and DD think I am some kind of Victorian maid nutter sweeping and mopping, but it hardly takes any time and is better than carting a ruddy great hoover round the house.

Dysons are terrible. Great big yellow monsters. They deserve kicking down the stairs.

RaceyLacey · 25/03/2010 14:21

Not at all. Dyson's are rubbish. I can't wait for my ones to stop working so that I can get a new hoover.

taffetacat · 25/03/2010 14:36

I Dyson my bread board. But only when no one is looking. And obv with the right attachment. I also occasionally Dyson the table and the worktops.

Is Dyson a verb? Or should I say vacuum? Its sounds strangely old fashioned.

To OPs point, I think a vacuum cleaner is useful for sucking up stuff on upholstery, skirting boards, cobwebs up high, bread boards etc. Not so much on the floor. Although I did fork out about £20 last year for a Dyson swivelly head hard floor attachment so I have a financial obligation to use the blardy thing.

bearcrumble · 25/03/2010 14:37

Best thing for rugs and wooden floors is a Henry.

beeny · 25/03/2010 14:42

Just wanted to know Bearcrumble is Henry good for carpets as well.

ErnestTheBavarian · 25/03/2010 15:06

strangely, if I just use the pipe off the dyson and therefore hoover a very specific area it'll suck up, but if I attach and head it sdoesn't have the strength to suck up anything. Have check nd double checked. There are def. no blockages. So I can keep my dyson for a once a year month cobweb sweep, but otherwise stick to mops.

Miele don't do bagless, do they?

ShinyAndNew · 25/03/2010 16:07

Is it a cylender or upright? The head of my cylender often needs taking apart and cleaning throughly. I have no idea about uprights though.

lifeas3plus1 · 25/03/2010 16:15

I love my dyson ball.

But in the old house we had wood floors all through the downstairs so I just used to sweep and mop but I had a little dust buster hand held hoover thingy that I could whip around the skirting boards and cobwebs with!

dawntigga · 25/03/2010 16:15

You could try using this instead to clean the floors.

Mouseface · 25/03/2010 16:19

Hoover? Dyson? What are these devices you talk of????? My floors are cleaned by my maid.

And then I wake up!!!!!!!!!!!

ErnestTheBavarian · 25/03/2010 16:49

I really wish I hadn't looked at that. Puke.

girlywhirly · 25/03/2010 16:53

I saw a broken Dyson at the tip once. when I told dh about it, he fell about laughing!

Agree a small hand-held vac might be handy though, in addition to dry and wet mops.

Doodlez · 25/03/2010 16:56

Gave up with Dyson after three crap ones in a row.

Now have a Sebo - eye-wateringly expensive but worth EVERY penny!

icecoldcatsbum · 25/03/2010 17:02

My Dyson stopped working last week, lost suction but I couldn't find anything blocked etc. so I gave up and bought a VAX. I couldn't believe how much dirt and dust it picked up off of what I thought were perfectly hoovered carpets!! Its a wonder we don't all have asthma!! and

Anyway the VAX says that it shouldn't be used on hard floors so following that you will be fine without a "hoover" at all. If it works for you then go for it I say!!

ErnestTheBavarian · 25/03/2010 17:06

iccb- something I very rarely think & never say, but what a great name
