I went to see my GP yesterday, I have some eczema on my legs and the usual creams are not doing the trick. he asked if I wash/ take a shower everyday, I said of corse, and he advised me to keep it to once a week! AIBU? instead of prescribing me some steroid cream which will ease the itching enough, so i can control it with moisturiser, he gives me useless advise which I'm not going to follow.
but seriously who would only wash their body onlt once a week?

well it's all very enlightening, I showered this morning and It will be my last one for a week I'll just do the bit and pieces that need doing. TBH I like a shower in the morning as it wakes me up and gets me ready for the day. I don't find it too time comsuming, only takes 5 mins to lather up a squishy and rub everywhere.
will try aqueous cream as a soap substitute and see if my skin is in better cindition by next saturday. and thank you everyone for their helpful advise.

I've only used water since starting bfing because I don't like the idea of my baby eating soap. Don't seem to smell any different really (those shower gel scents wear off pretty fast anyway). Use baby wipes under the armpits during the day to freshen up.

cryingforcadburys - it seems you have taken me literally - i'm sure nothing would happen to me. other than feeling unclean.

and as i don't like feeling unclean i shower or have a bath every day. sometimes i even have a shower in the morning AND a bath in the evening.

bit odd that you have picked up on my post when so many others have said essentially the same thing.

southeastastra · 20/03/2010 20:15

weird, i was thinking about this earlier. my cousins used to have baths everyday and we used to think they were a bit extreme, people didn't used to bathe or shower daily in the 70s

There is almost always a reason behind eczema. Trying to smother it with chemicals won't make it go away.

I'm so surprised that people with eczema or who have children with eczema have not heard of the link between it and dairy. My friend suffers very badly, and when she's going through a bad patch, she cuts out dairy, wheat, alcohol, sugar and caffeine for a week or two and the eczema calms down. She also has acupuncture for it which has been very successful.

I think you need to look at why you have eczema, rather than drying your skin out with soap and thinning it with steroids.

Picante · 20/03/2010 20:22

Aqueous cream is full of chemicals. Try a paraben-free wash or just water.

'unclean' is a really interesting word to use ceres instead of 'dirty' I think because of the cultural associations with religion.

I also dont like the assertion that an unwashed vagina smells unpleasant - it may smell but surely its a matter of opinion if its bad or not as I'm sure lots of men would testify...

To get back to Solo, way back up the thread - I use my DD's bubble bath, Infacare, which is v. mild and I find doesn't irritate me, but still gives me the bubble-bath sensation.

I find things like Oilatum make my skin worse. Quite intrigued by the wash hair only in water idea, as my hair is so greasy it's dirty by the end of the day, let alone the next day - mind, I do work in the City so that may well be the cause...

farmerjones · 20/03/2010 23:59

consultant dermatologist says best thing for skin is to wash with only water. no soap or product of any sort.

BrahmsThirdRacket · 21/03/2010 00:19

I am really surprised at how many people aren't bothered about washing every day. If I didn't have a shower once a day I would feel pretty icky.

Once a week?! EEEWWWWW.

ToccataAndFudge · 21/03/2010 00:30

I wash "pits and bits" every day - but only shower every 2 or 3 days (try and make it 2 days otherwise my hair starts looking rank).

expatinscotland · 21/03/2010 00:34

If you're going to wash pits and bits why not just shower?

ToccataAndFudge · 21/03/2010 00:43

because I don't need to wash my entire body, take the time doing it when I can spent a much shorter length of time just making sure I'm hygenic

coralanne · 21/03/2010 00:46

A friend was travelling years ago and I remember her saying that she didn't shower every day.

She just had a APC. Couldn't work out what it meant so had to ask her.

ToccataAndFudge · 21/03/2010 00:46

not to mention the fact that it's easier to stop and make sure DS3 isn't getting into mischief (had shouts of "tuuuuuuuck" today when I was tidying up in the dining room - went through to the living room to find him standing on the window.........we don't have nice wide window ledges - he was holding on with finger tips and balanced on the edge of his toes ) when I'm standing next to the sink than when I'm in the shower........

SolidGoldBrass · 21/03/2010 00:57

How dirty do your legs actually get? Apologies if you are a farmer or mud wrestler or something, but generally the only bits that need a daily wash are face, front and forks. Or face and forks, really.

Unlikelyamazonian · 21/03/2010 01:10

Only thing necessary to wash is your p's love lolly. If no dp, no soapy worries

LilQueenie · 21/03/2010 01:12

I wash everyday and have a bit of a dry skin problem. I can understand the eczema being bad if you did this. However giving yourself a quick 'top and tail' each morning is fine and leave the main bathing once a week sounds fine to me.

duchesse · 21/03/2010 01:24

I only bath the baby about once a fortnight or three weeks, and even then when she starts to whiff a bit of pee. Just one bath and her face, arms and legs are variously dry and cracking and spotty. Not worth it. A bit different for adults though. I'd go for washing only crucial bits during a trial fortnight and see how you get on.

solo · 21/03/2010 02:47

TBMOM, it does not become unpleasant with plain water ~ not at all, not under a running shower! and how can soap leave the natural scent of the vulva? I don't buy that at all.
