I went to see my GP yesterday, I have some eczema on my legs and the usual creams are not doing the trick. he asked if I wash/ take a shower everyday, I said of corse, and he advised me to keep it to once a week! AIBU? instead of prescribing me some steroid cream which will ease the itching enough, so i can control it with moisturiser, he gives me useless advise which I'm not going to follow.
but seriously who would only wash their body onlt once a week?

If I've ever had a patch of eczema, I've always washed in and moisurised with Aqueous cream and it's gone very quickly. It's a very good moisturiser IMO.
You can get it even cheaper that £2.99 too, I paid much less in Superdrug, but I don't need to use it very often. Do wash my 'bits' with it though. Soap causes thrush and cystitis IME.

mawbroon · 20/03/2010 16:42

I hate not showering every day.

I recently broke my ankle and got a waterproof cover to go over my cast. If you found that not washing your legs so often did help, might it be worth investing in them?

Disagree with Breastmilksonme - aqeous cream is a BRILLIANT moisturiser for excema -use it as a soap substitute AND moisturiser. Not bathing/showering every day would not be my idea of fun, but having seent he difference it can make to severe excema, I'd definately give it a go. Washing strips the skins of lots of natural oils and lubricants.

dills · 20/03/2010 16:47

Lavender oils are very good for your problem, if you mix the essential oil with a little olive oil and rub into your skin this may help , do not use it neat though it is too strong .Dills

TBMOM, but you are using soap to wash away the natural scent of your 'bits'. Plain water is fine and more often than not all I use down there(Aqueous is good if you're a bit sore from sweating etc)and I don't smell! In fact, I do recall that daily washing with soap on a flannel down there as a youngster(training by mother)was very smelly!

foreverastudent · 20/03/2010 17:37

yabu, washing everyday makes you sound as if you have ocd

FalafelAtYourFeet · 20/03/2010 17:45

at feeling physically sick at the thought of leaving house without a wash!

MaryAnnSingleton · 20/03/2010 17:51

that is a silly thing to say foreverastudent, if you don't mind my saying. I have a bath every day ,I don't have eczema but would take your doctor's advice and try for a week or so not washing the affected parts. I fid aqueous cream a brilliant moisturiser btw- I used it during radiotherapy as it's the recommended moisturiser and I continue to use it on my face and neck as I seem to have become irritated by my lovely Dr Hauschka rose cream.

MaryAnnSingleton · 20/03/2010 17:53

And I do think that washing thing might be a generational things as someone else said. My mum has a weekly bath -she thinks that I wash too much and that I encourage ds to wash too much. All my friends bath/shower once a day -this seems perfectly reasonable.

nbee84 · 20/03/2010 17:54

My son never got on with aqueous cream - a lot of eczema sufferers don't. It is worth trying different moisturisers/soap substitutes until you find one that works for you.

Have a read of this

and this

diddl · 20/03/2010 17:56

That was me MaryAnnSingleton.

My IL´s turn shower on to get wet, turn off to soap themselves & then turn on again to rinse.

Sorry, I find it amusing-does anyone else do it?

alardi · 20/03/2010 17:56

Who has time to do a full wash every day (I mean, who has time who also has a job and children and anything else very demanding in their life)?

I have never compared notes with friends in real life about our bathing habits, I just don't feel the need to know ... .

MaryAnnSingleton · 20/03/2010 17:58

I just get up earlier - I like to feel fresh and ready for the day,not all sweaty and night-ish.

diddl · 20/03/2010 17:59

A shower takes 5/10mins-who wouldn´t have time for that?

alardi · 20/03/2010 18:00

Ah, I can't sleep or stay asleep at all if I get sweaty so I don't usually do that. And I am NOT a morning person. "Having" to shower before I left the house in the morning would absolutely do my nut in. It's hard enough as it is organising all the others and getting out the door on time.

missismac · 20/03/2010 18:10

I suppose it depends how much of sweaty or smelly person you are. DH showers every day. I bathe/shower two/three times a week. I'm fairly coldblooded & don't sweat much so just don't need to shower as frequently. So I suppose YABU, but if you're smelly I can see your point.

alardi · 20/03/2010 18:14

But there's time spent getting dry, Diddl. And wondering what the [blank] the DC are getting up to while you're in there. And getting the towel hung up to dry or in the basket and hauling clothes in there to start with. And time getting one's hair dry too if you washed it (and getting hair 'styled' if you're that sort of person). And who the heck actually enjoys a 5 minute shower? I want a long soak in the bath if I'm going to have to get chilled afterwards... brr!.

MmmCoffee · 20/03/2010 18:20

I have eczema, and I like to shower every day. My hair is curly and wild if it doesn't get drenched in the morning, but I found that a shower would leave my skin dry and itchy.

Now I still shower every day, but on doc's advice I have the water cool (about body temp) and don't use soap/shower gel anywhere except my pits & bits. If I've had a really sweaty night (no I mean because of the weather, get your minds out of the gutter) then I rub aqueous cream all over and rinse it off.

I also find that shampoo makes my back itchy and dry where I rinse it out. I only shampoo about 3 or 4 times a month, use conditioner on its own apart from that. When I am using shampoo, I chuck aqueous cream all over my back first so there's a 'barrier'.

But the biggest difference I found was when I made the water cooler. Amazing.

diddl · 20/03/2010 18:26

Well I shower to wash, not enjoy!

but I´ve never had problems fitting one in in the mornings.

CryingforCadburys · 20/03/2010 18:33

ceres - you "wouldn't be able to manage without a daily shower/bath"? What on earth would happen to you?

MumGoneCrazy · 20/03/2010 18:48

I have bad eczema on my arms, elbows, backs of my knees, stomach and on my neck. I also have a very dry scalp, so I only bath once a week and my hair gets washed every 3/4 days over the bath. I use balneum oil and no soap in my bath and I wash my pits, face and feet twice a day with a flannel, water and baby soap.

Bumperlicious · 20/03/2010 18:57

YABU, I shower every other day, sometimes even a bit longer, especially now I have morning sickness, the thought of showering then getting all cold makes me want to vomit, so you could say that I feel physically sick at having a shower every day

It's funny how judgemental people can get about this topic.

WoTmania · 20/03/2010 19:12

SugarMousePink - I just use water. I got to the point where in summer I was washing it everyday as I had 'oily' hair but I was told this about my facial skin too. I stopped using any soap on my face years ago and it cleared up so I figured I'd go for0 it with my hair.
The theory is that when you use detergents on your hair you wash away your natural oils so your body produces more to replace whats gone annd the more you wash the more your body produces in replacement iyswim.
The main disadvantage is that it takes around 6-8 weeks for your natural oil levels to adjust but I just brushed my hair lots (distributes the oils) and rinsed with warm water whenever it got too itchy/manky.
Not wishing to sound smug but, I frequently get completed on the condition of my hair these days.

omnishambles · 20/03/2010 19:21

lol at being physically sick with not showering everyday - I have to make myself shower/bath - its such a bloody faff and as others have said I really dont have time in the mornings - there isnt a spare minute let alone 5.

What do people do when they go camping? Or go to festivals? Presumably 24 hour flights are out of the question as well.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 20/03/2010 19:21

Aqueous cream is not meant to be used as a moisturiser, there has been an article recently about it in the paper. It can make eczema much worse because it is a soap substitute and has a very mild detergent. Yet GP's still prescribe it because it is so cheap.

Soap leaves the natural scent of the vulva solo, but leave it for a few days, unwashed, or with just plain water and it quickly becomes unpleasant.
