I found this on a website:

"Marketing practices that undermine breastfeeding are potentially hazardous wherever they are pursued: in the developing world, WHO estimates that some 1.5 million children die each year because they are not adequately breastfed. These facts are not in dispute."

HTH

They strap babies to rockets and... er, hang on, no, that's something else entirely.

Here.

Not just an MN thing fortunately.

chicaguapa · 16/03/2010 11:08

It would probably be easier to look on the internet. Here is a good place to start.

I boycott Nestle and also try to buy products that don't use palm oil. But will watch this thread with interest as it usually highlights the other unethical companies that I don't want to give my money to.

The basic issue that Nestle did some pretty unscrupulous things with regard to use of/marketing/providing "free" then withdrawing formula milk in developing countries.

My own view, however, is that unless you're prepared to boycott every Nestle and/or associated product/company (incuding L'Oreal)it's a bit "pick and choose" for convenience.

Also, there are a lot of companies (including Disney and Fisher Price, allegedly) that use child labour in fairly unpleasant ways. I think that's worse as no-one actually forced the mothers to use the formula although they were pretty thoroughly misled.

By the way, I don't boycott Nestle or many other companies (I do avoid some) but I think it's best to understand where the products you're buying come from...

Havingkittens · 16/03/2010 11:14

Scroll down to the "Controversy and Criticism" section, there's a whole heap of resons why they are boycotted

wow thanks for the links , and here was i thinking it was just a mumsnet thing
along with the fruit shoots , although i can see why fruit shoots might be frowned upon tbh vile things . will stick to cadburys eggs then this year for the dc's

I was boycotting till I realised that I wasn't (i.e I was using a subsidy product)... I then realised that nestle seem to be globally influential, and that many mnay things seem to be linked to them (more than we know). Has the boycott actually made a difference? I mea they SAY they have changed and clearly they have not, so what next? I mean if boycotting isn't working, what next?

As an aside, where can I get condensed milk that has not been touched by nestle. It always erks me that I have no alternative.

GoldenSnitch · 16/03/2010 11:43

They've gotten to Annabel Karmel now too. She's endorsing their "wholegrain team"

Mrsdoasyouwouldbedoneby · 16/03/2010 11:53

Is this how they are outsmarting any boycott? buyng into, even in a small part, other major companies... so we are forced to support them? Or do it by accident. For eg, I had no idea they made money from Body Shop, I bet most of the general public have no idea either.

ShowOfHands · 16/03/2010 12:56

I think boycotting them will never work in the long term. They're too ubiquitous and successful.

What they/we want to achieve is them changing their practices. And somebody standing up to them and making them do it. Their success can't be stopped, their illegal practices can.

chicaguapa · 16/03/2010 12:57

You can get a list of all the Nestle connected products and it's not difficult to boycott if you want to. The idea is supposed to be 'if there's an alternative' buy that instead. I've not managed to find an alternative to smarties yet (needed for a birthday cake) and I guess there isn't one for evaporated milk.

I don't suppose it's going to make a big difference to the Nestle profits if we boycott them or not. But it puts consumer spending power back in your court and YOU choose where to spend your money.

BTW I remember when Body Shop was bought by L'Oreal. It was a big story at the time.

Tripoli · 16/03/2010 13:48

Is there a comprehensive list of everything to be boycotted?

I boycott Lush products because they finance the anti-hunt people to follow the hunt and decapitate people.

Tripoli · 16/03/2010 13:49

I'm unclear on products from the West Bank. How do we know they are not from a Kibbutz?

bronze · 16/03/2010 13:51

there is a list somewhere triopli. I havent seen it for a few years though

bronze · 16/03/2010 13:52

tripol somewhere here

bronze · 16/03/2010 13:53

lush also follow the rolling five year rule so arent very ethical

I'm not as exercised about the animals as I am about the person who got their head chopped off by the girocopter. Animal rights? Humans with their heads left on?

LetThereBeRock · 16/03/2010 13:56

Wouldn't [http://www.aquarterof.co.uk/chocolate-beans-p-151231.html these]] work as an alternative to Smarties?

LetThereBeRock · 16/03/2010 13:57

These

chicaguapa · 16/03/2010 13:59

This should be an updated list of products.

chicaguapa · 16/03/2010 14:00

Thanks LetThereBeRock. That's a fine alternative.

oldraver · 16/03/2010 14:01

chicaguapa there is a non-Nestle evaporated milk, I'm not sure if I read it on here or on the Anti Nestle site

There are also dairy free beans available, though as they use natural colours arnt as bight as Smaties
