To expect my neighbours to part on their drive?

I live in a street of terraces. Parking is a flipping nightmare as it is a narrow street, not designed for cars. Most people have 2 cars which doesn't help. Some days you cannot park at all and have to drive to surrounding streets.

I park outside my house when I can and DH parks his smaller car down the side road which is what alot of people do. However my next door neighbours have off street parking at the back of their house which they never use, they don't park outside of their house because 'it's too near the corner' so they park in front of someones house and now they have bought a second car! Unlike everyone else they don't part this round the corner they park it on the street.

It has really annoyed me. I am not bothered about where I park on the street as long as I get it somewhere but I am aghast that they have off street parking, can't be arsed to use it and park 2 cars on the road!

I think I should say something, in the nicest possible way though. (BTW - there is no obvious reason why they don't use the off road parking, think they just don't like a car taking up space in the garden probably.)

PARK on their drive not part. They can part all they like!

the house opposite me parks in front of my hose - meaning we have to walk up the road to cross the road, as they park three cars bumper to bumper - and leave there drive empty.

i have taken to parking across there drive - not blocking it but infornt of their house.

they seem now to be parking there instead - so I cant park there worked then

gingernutlover · 15/03/2010 09:31

if its a very narrow street maybe they find that its hard to get out of their driveway. Some roads round here are like that and I notice that people park right up to other peoples drives within a couple of inches, must be very difficult to get the car out.

fifitot · 15/03/2010 09:45

No - they've got tons of space as it's round the back. i just think they are selfish and can't be bothered to open the gate to put the car on the drive.

Riven, that's what I was going to say!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/03/2010 10:17

Genius Riven!

Tiredmumno1 · 15/03/2010 10:34

Grr bloody neighbours, some of ours think they own the street with their 3 cars. They need to grow up

pranma · 15/03/2010 11:37

Our neighbours are lovely but they own 2 cars and a pickup-they always park one of the vehicles at an angle so it is partly across our drive and we cant get in if we're out or out if we're in!They are always very pleasant about movung if asked but why oh why do they keep doing it??

itsmeitsmeolord · 15/03/2010 11:40

It could be worse, you could be me..... Our new neighbours tell all their friends and family that they can park on our drive as we have plenty of room......

Yes we do, thats why we bought the fucking house. To have lots of room. And privacy.

Rockbird · 15/03/2010 11:47

My parents have neighbours like this. They have a drive and the space in front of their drive. They have a big MPV and the husband brings home his school minibus which they also don't park on the road. In fact, the bloody great thing sat outside my parents' window all weekend blocking out the light.

I know no one is entitled to the space outside their house but it's bloody antisocial.

Rockbird · 15/03/2010 11:48

Also don't park on the drive I mean. Doh!

EggyAllenPoe · 15/03/2010 12:03

erm - if their car is taxed, they are ok to street park it. no-one owns the road. YABU.

LadyBiscuit · 15/03/2010 12:06

They could buy 15 cars if they liked and park them on the street. YABU

swanandduck · 15/03/2010 12:15

Just because someone is legally entitled to do something, doesn't always mean it's not considerate. People are legally entitled to stand beside you in a bus shelter and light up a cigarette, but it's bloody annoying and thoughtless. The same with parking outside other people's houses when you have a space of your own to use.

swanandduck · 15/03/2010 12:15

Sorry, not inconsiderate.

WhereYouLeftIt · 15/03/2010 12:15

Just because they are entitled to park on the street does not mean that it is considerate to do so. YANBU. And like Riven, I would ask them if you can park on their drive if they don't want to use it.

WhereYouLeftIt · 15/03/2010 12:18

Oops, cross-post with swanandduck. Must type faster

foofi · 15/03/2010 12:18

I agree with Eggy.
We have a drive, but after our neighbours kept blocking us in I decided to park on the road so that I didn't have to go and get them every time I wanted to go out

Ivykaty44 · 15/03/2010 12:20

If someone parks in my drive - then I park across the drive not a problem to block my own drive

mayorquimby · 15/03/2010 12:21

public road yabu

bratnav · 15/03/2010 12:22

Agree it is very annoying. We live on a narrow terraced street, most of the families that live here have one car, but the students (about half the street) all have a car each, so about 4-5 cars per house. I have been known to have to park 2 or 3 streets away with 4 DC (inc a 6mo baby) and shopping. Roll on Uni holidays

fifitot · 15/03/2010 14:04

Might be legal but still inconsiderate don't you think? And a bit selfish.

I would like to think I considered my neighbours tbh.

Thanks for replies though. Having read them and thought about it, I don't think I am unreasonable and will probably have a word with them at some point.
