To expect my neighbours to part on their drive?

I live in a street of terraces. Parking is a flipping nightmare as it is a narrow street, not designed for cars. Most people have 2 cars which doesn't help. Some days you cannot park at all and have to drive to surrounding streets.

I park outside my house when I can and DH parks his smaller car down the side road which is what alot of people do. However my next door neighbours have off street parking at the back of their house which they never use, they don't park outside of their house because 'it's too near the corner' so they park in front of someones house and now they have bought a second car! Unlike everyone else they don't part this round the corner they park it on the street.

It has really annoyed me. I am not bothered about where I park on the street as long as I get it somewhere but I am aghast that they have off street parking, can't be arsed to use it and park 2 cars on the road!

I think I should say something, in the nicest possible way though. (BTW - there is no obvious reason why they don't use the off road parking, think they just don't like a car taking up space in the garden probably.)

I really believe that a little nice talking will make you feel better and resolve the situation. Go round with a cake or bake some muffins etc and ask for a chat. discuss parking nicely- they'll be putty in your hands!

Actually that is a very good point emmmmmaaaaa - my sister has off street parking but people are constantly parking outside her gate. Okay, the police will come and tow them but it takes them anything up to 2 hours to turn up. Also, parking on the drive means backing out onto a very fast road. Parking is limited where they live but it's much easier to park on the street

They may want to use their parking area as a garden?

Do you have yard space at the back?

fifitot · 15/03/2010 18:17

The way the street is set out, we can't access the space at the back of our house because it's too narrow, only houses on the end of the terraces can get the turn they need. The people before them totally redid their garden, which is pretty big and put up a gate to allow them access. It's set up for parking.

What gets me, is fair enough, they don't want to park on their drive but they don't want to park in front of their house either! Think this is because it makes your car a bit vulnerable to cars turning the corner but since they don't park there and park their now 2 cars in front of other houses it means someone else has to park there.

I just think they might have the good grace to recognise this and at least put one car down the side road. Or even if they did it at weekends when the road is especially busy - they don't even use their cars then and they sit in front of someone elses house all weekend while that poor person is driving round the block 50 times trying to squeeze in somewhere.

itsmeitsmeolord - you don't let them, do you? I hope you tell them to shift!
