BUT now he is on the sofa in just a nappy face bright red, burning, stomach and back burning, i gave him childrens ibruprofen earlier about 9.30pm. he keeps drifitng in and out of sleep but won't take calpol. how else can i get his temp down. he keeps pulling his blanket up over him.

Luke warm sponging?

snice · 10/03/2010 00:37

and a fan gently on after sponging maybe?

ShowOfHands · 10/03/2010 00:37

Have you taken a temperature?

Of course call a doc or nhs direct if you're worried.

In terms of cooling him down, lots of fluids if he can (can you hide calpol in a drink?), try and replace the blanket with a sheet if he insists on being covered, a fan (but not on him, just in the room), sponge him down with tepid water.

Why are temps always worse at night?

Nettiespagetti · 10/03/2010 00:37

Yes flannel him down.

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 10/03/2010 00:39

No, don't sponge. Have you checked his temp? Do you have a fan? pop it on so it rotates over him. Give him a drink aswell. Keep trying with the calpol.

ShowOfHands · 10/03/2010 00:39

Am assuming toddler not baby btw?

ShowOfHands · 10/03/2010 00:41

Fluffy, why out of curiosity? I know cold sponging and cool baths are a no but been at hospital with my dniece all day today who is v poorly with a high temp and they said tepid sponging was definitely a good thing (paeds consultant saying this).

EdTheConfessor · 10/03/2010 00:41

What's his temperature now?
Have you got one of those 5ml dose syringes for the calpol? They are easy to slip into the corner of the mouth to dispense the calpol. You can't give hime the calpol yet though if you have given him calpol within the last 6 hours.

The sponging seems to be the only thing to do now. How long has he been this hot? only just?

TheLadyEvenstar · 10/03/2010 00:42

he is 2yrs old. only thing i have managed to get him to drink is chocolate milk. don't think calpol will mix with that tbh.

he was fine earlier running around and playing.

have not got a thermometer,i did have but cannot find it arghhhhh

motherlovebone · 10/03/2010 00:43

have you got vinegar in the house?
mix 50/50 with warm water and sponge him with that.
smells for a mo, but brings temp down fast

TheLadyEvenstar · 10/03/2010 00:43

i had him on my lap a little while ago me in just my bra and him in his nappy and after less than 2minutes i had to put him down because of the heat of him...

OP posts:
motherlovebone · 10/03/2010 00:44

sponge him where you would wash, forehead, back of neck, tummy...
honest, it works

ShowOfHands · 10/03/2010 00:45

Cuddling him will also heat him up quite a bit when he's already hot.

Is he rousable? Tired is normal but does he respond properly to you?

TheLadyEvenstar · 10/03/2010 00:45

ok, have got luke warm flannel been wiping him down with that for most of evening forgot to say that sorry head is up the wall, i am crap when the kids are ill, i go into overdrive.

OP posts:
EdTheConfessor · 10/03/2010 00:46

you shouldn't hold him though even if he's griping as your body heat will increase his temperature. A gentle fan is what they use in hospital for high temp. He sounds pretty hot. Should really try the calpol and fluids especially if his breath smells dry.

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 10/03/2010 00:46

show we were told not to sponge them down, the theory was that they cool down too quickly as the water evaporates, they then shiver and it heats them up even more.

Chocolate milk will curdle in his tummy, will he drink watered down fruit juice or weak squash??

motherlovebone · 10/03/2010 00:47

do the vinegar if poss.
works very quickly

TheLadyEvenstar · 10/03/2010 00:47

SOH he does respond but is very quiet iywim?

I feel completely useless tbh

OP posts:
ShowOfHands · 10/03/2010 00:47

Have you taken the blanket off him?

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 10/03/2010 00:49

You need to give NHS direct a call Lady. It's best to get him checked over.

TheLadyEvenstar · 10/03/2010 00:50

yes i have and he sobbed for it so it is on his feet as that has settled him again. am trying to swap it for a sheet but he just gets so upset because he has a thing about fleece blankets.

OP posts:
ShowOfHands · 10/03/2010 00:51

Fluffy, I did ask the doctor about that as dn has a history of febrile convulsions so was worried that sponging would artificially create a spike and set another one off but he said tepid sponging (comfortable to the touch temperature water) was fine but he did stress that he expected it to be in tandem with anti-pyretics to prevent the spike.

TheLadyEvenstar · 10/03/2010 00:53

Waiting for NHS direct to call me back now....I guess i wont be going to the flash/febreeze event tomorrow as i am in for the long haul tonight....is it selfish to feel upset about not going??

OP posts:
ShowOfHands · 10/03/2010 00:54

Ignore me wittering on TLE, my dniece has real problems with temperatures, they make her quite sick and it's always a struggle to keep hers down to a level where she's not vomitting/dehydrated.

It is horrid to feel so useless. Remember he's tired too after being sick/running around/having a temp but I think it's quite reassuring to just ring and have a chat with somebody at NHS Direct, even if it's just for your peace of mind.

ShowOfHands · 10/03/2010 00:55

Not selfish at all. It's hard missing out on things you're looking forward to.
