Everyone knows sandwich crusts should match

SwissCheeseIsHolyCheesus · 09/03/2010 13:39

Just had this argument discussion with dp when he caught me rearranging his sandwiches, he says it dosent matter.

I say it does.

The bottom crust should match the bottom crust, and the top crust should match the top crust, it looks better, is tidier and holds the filling in better.

When was the last time anybody saw a shop bought butty with unmatched crusts hey ??

So tell me, am I being unreasonable to sneak behind dp and match his crusts for him ??!!

@ TheCrackFox .. Are you sure we are not married to the same person?!

My Husband doesn't bother to cut sandwiches in half either! (he calls them 'man-size pieces')
.. Nor does he even bother to put butter or spread on it!

YANBU !

Oooh sooo glad Im not on my own with this aswell, its been my dirty little obsession secret for years Nobody in my family understands

cruelladepoppins · 09/03/2010 14:41

It would never enter my head to make sandwiches any other way - so YANBU!

But I would never dream of arranging another adult's sandwiches for them - so YABU!

And I frequently eat sandwiches cut into little squares (but am not a toddler) - so IABU!

Have nothing to say about Tiger Bread

YANBU.The bread must line up.
Triangle sandwiches just taste better, and Tiger bread is addictive (Tesco's is the nicest)

SwissCheeseIsHolyCheesus · 09/03/2010 14:48

AND, HE PILES UP THE FILLING INTO THE MIDDLE OF THE BREAD

OP posts:
piprabbit · 09/03/2010 14:54

Swiss, that is just plain wrong.

It has to be spread evenly over the matching bread. Otherwise you get crusts with no filling. .

DramaInPyjamas · 09/03/2010 15:00

Is tiger bread the same as tiger tails?

Tiger tails is a long baguette but with orangey crusty bits. Amazing and addictive! I've never seen it as a loaf though. But I live in Scotland maybe we only have the tiger tails variety..

theminniebobble · 09/03/2010 15:02

I am with you ladies.

You may wish to avert your eyes from this revelation however my DH fills himself
pitta breads to take to work. He takes them out of the freezer to defrost and toast them prior to preparing them. However he doesn't wait for them to cool before lumping in the filling!?!?!?!

Sometimes there's lettuce in them or mayo- can you imagine how soggy that is by the time he eats them?

happystressedmum · 09/03/2010 15:15

Agree re matching but generally speaking I always cut the crusts off for my 7 year old when he requests sandwiches for packed lunch and it most certainly HAS to be cut on the diagonal otherwise he will not eat them. I also have to do one white and one brown slice. For my DD who is two I always do one white and one brown but do them in different shapes with cookie cutters so ham sandwiches are pig shaped and teddy bear shaped and around christmas time, christmas tree shaped! Am I sad?! They do love it though! And bananas with silly faces drawn on them!

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 09/03/2010 15:23

Actually, sod crust matching, what really gets me about men making sandwiches is that if I ask what he wants on a sandwich it'll be a list at least 5 items long (ham, cheese, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomatoes for example) when I was just planning on doing a quick sandwich before we leave the house. So I have to get everything out, use three different knives, plates, chopping board, and it has to be multigrain granary, cut into triangles etc

Whereas if he was making it for himself it'd just be a big wodge of ham shoved between two bits of any old bread, not even cut in half or given the dignity of a plate.

Malificence · 09/03/2010 15:24

Tiger bread is the devil's vomit!

They ruin perfectly decent bread by painting it with sesame oil!

I'm tucking into some Allison wholemeal batch and it is gorgeous, I only wish I'd got some Lurpack instead of buttery Flora.

oopsandbabycoconut · 09/03/2010 15:29

YANBU bread must match and when you take 2 slices out the packet you must put it back together as it came out the bag i.e. middle to middle. Must be cut into triangles especially when in quarters as in our house you can only leave crusts if the go around a corner so square corners result in halfa sarnie left behind!

mmmm tiger bread - our Tesco now do rolls but hte yummy bit is often burnt

LetThereBeRock · 09/03/2010 15:32

We most definitely have the loaves in Scotland. I buy them frequently.

YanknCock · 09/03/2010 15:32

Crusts must match. Particularly essential if you are making a toasted sandwich on the hob--have to be careful to butter the right sides so when assembled to fry the edges aren't wonky.

I like triangles and trained DH to do this when he makes me a sandwich. For his own he doesn't bother cutting.

LetThereBeRock · 09/03/2010 15:33

And tiger bread is not foul or the devil's vomit. It's incredibly delicious and I could happily work my way through an entire loaf.

Soapsy · 09/03/2010 15:38

DH only ever butters one piece of bread (with about an inch of butter), doesn't care if they don't match, or might even go so far as to use slices from different loaves

Just plain wrong.

stickylittlefingers · 09/03/2010 16:43

What if you are only using one piece of bread and bending it in the middle? Would you always bend vertically rather than horizontally perhaps?

I don't = I like a bit of a mix so you get a bit of crunchy top loaf crust on each sandwich.

Runs away and hides...

alibubbles · 09/03/2010 16:48

I always cut the crusts off!

stickylittlefingers · 09/03/2010 16:49

alibubbles can I eat your crusts?

Do you have dead straight hair?

SwissCheeseIsHolyCheesus · 09/03/2010 16:55

And everybody knows the top crusts must point upwards in the toaster, tis the only way

OP posts:
taffetacat · 09/03/2010 16:55

My DH has rectangles then squares. And so does everyone else in our house if he is making the sandwiches ( the only food he ever makes apart from an occasional omelette).

When DH isn't around, DS and I cut them into rectangles only. We don't tell DH. Its our little secret.

My fave is Sainsbo's Harvest Grain fresh from bakery. I once had a Waitrose 3 grain one from their bakery which was also v good.

Uneven filling sounds very wrong. YANBU re the crusts. I like crusts dipped in balsamic. Mmmmm.

CelticUnited · 09/03/2010 17:18

YANBU but only because the filling falls out otherwise, not for appearances' sake!

SwissCheeseIsHolyCheesus · 09/03/2010 17:25

It just looks so wrong with unmatched crusts

ROFL at 'secret' rectangles

OP posts:
zachsmama · 09/03/2010 18:39

YANBU It all has to match - tops, bottoms and sides otherwise it's just wrong. I don't know why but it's just wrong.
