to think that people who follow their star signs are bonkers

I mean those people who say - "we get on because we have complimentary star sign".

Or "what star sign are you?" who really cares about this and why??

I'm writing about people who read star signs and believe them - i just think it is madness and dismiss people who believe in star signs as being a bit dim witted.

I read an interview with an astrologer who answered these criticisms by saying that of course these daily horoscopes are rubbish and what you really need is a £££ personal horoscope instead. He does write one of those useless daily horoscope pages though

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 04/03/2010 21:39

Lets not be black and white here, the horoscopes that you read in the newspapers are very general and vague, naturally, but if you went for a personal astrological forecast based on your time, place and date of birth it would be very personal and individual to you and you would be suprised at the accuracies and predictions about your personality, future, health and relationships.

lolapoppins · 04/03/2010 21:40

Whenever I meet people who are really into star signs - you always know who thru are as it's one of the first things they ask you - I always pluck ansign out of the air and pretend it's mine. Great fun when they start banging on about how they knew that you were a so ans so sign because of this and that. Twats.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 04/03/2010 21:41

You sound like a lovely person lolapoppins

mitochondria · 04/03/2010 21:45

My son was a week overdue. If he'd come on his due date, he'd have been a different star sign than the one he ended up as. Did his personality shift in that extra week in utero?

I don't even understand why people give it brain-space, to be honest.

Oblomov · 04/03/2010 21:49

zippy i don't know many. i don't generally ask, but the few people i have done, do match.
dh is leo, and my best friend is aswell.
my two work colleagues that i get on well with are aquarians. and one day we looked it up at lunchtime, and we all agreed we matched it , so well it was frightening.

Oblomov · 04/03/2010 21:50

oh and i only know theirs because we are big on birthdays at my work. we have cakes. we often go for a curry. so i just knew that they were 2 days before and 2 days after me. thats all !!

CoteDAzur · 04/03/2010 21:55

YANBU.

scottishmummy · 04/03/2010 21:55

LOL,astrology is for the hard of thinking.probably same fuckwits who believe in new age therapy/alternative therapies

Baileysismyfriend · 04/03/2010 21:55

I think its all a bit bonkers to be honest and don't know anyone who really takes star signs seriously - although I guess they could be closet astrologers?

But, it doesnt do any harm - well unless people are being conned out of ££'s- so live and let live I reckon.

lolapoppins · 04/03/2010 21:56

I am an ok peron actually thebreastmilksonme - I just seem to have a knack of meeting people who base thier assumption of others on the date they were born before giving them a chance as a person. There are quite a few people where I live that take stuff like that like it's gospel and It grates on you after a while, one of the downsides of living in hippy valley.

cece · 04/03/2010 22:02

No different to anyone who follows a certain belief system though surely? What about religions? same thing imo.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 04/03/2010 22:03

I don't think you should knock what you don't understand. People have used Astrology since the beginning of time. It was mentioned in the Bible and people have accurately predicted events through using it. Don't let ignorance about a subject cause you to ridicule it and don't let newspaper charts colour your judgement on it. It is a way of life for some people and it's not fair to call people who are interested in it 'twats' or 'fuckwits' just vecause it's not something you understand.

scottishmummy · 04/03/2010 22:08

i will knock something thta is non-empirical,spurious and unsubatantiated. fake scientific mumbo jumbo.and tbh the "things we do not understand" is also trotted out by folk who believe in wee silver men and flying saucers

mitochondria · 04/03/2010 22:10

Just because it's been used for a long time doesn't make it right. Neither does being mentioned in the Bible, really.

cece has a point, there.

Baileysismyfriend · 04/03/2010 22:12

TBOM - Its not about a lack of understanding, some people just do not believe in it, myself included.

TheFallenMadonna · 04/03/2010 22:15

I'm less sceptical about little green men (or extraterrestrial life at least) than I am about astrology.

But then I believe in God, so you can safely ignore what I say

mitochondria · 04/03/2010 22:16

I don't believe in anything. It's easier that way.

scottishmummy · 04/03/2010 22:17

i can understand and apply many complex things.astrology is not complex it is pseudo-science

i dont believe astrology.might as well believe in fairies

TheFallenMadonna · 04/03/2010 22:17

I think it must be.

Gmarksthespot · 04/03/2010 22:20

YANBU.

Do people really believe 6 billion people in the world all fall into 12 star signs

overmydeadbody · 04/03/2010 22:21

yanbu, it is very silly.

It's no different from people who think they can have their palms read, or tarot cards, or any of that other nonsense.

overmydeadbody · 04/03/2010 22:23

It's got nothing to do with understanding bmom.

scottishmummy · 04/03/2010 22:26

do you think the human condition would be so profound, psychiatry so complex if we could assign human character and behaviour by star signs

tarot
astro-mumbojumbo
healers
auras/new age

all rubbish for the easily lead who have external locus of control.rather than accept there are no other external forces.

Heebiejeebie · 04/03/2010 22:36

Absolute twaddle. It INFURIATES me that the observer publishes horoscopes. And the individually cast star chart is crapola as well, even if you ignore the fundamental implausability, just look at non-identical twins, ffs. When I was pregnant, credulous types kept asking what star sign the baby was going to be and being surprised and sad when I said I had no idea. I had to look it up in the end to save rudeness/embarrassment.
