to think it's not on for my neighbour to put cones outside our house to reserve himself a parking space?

Parking's a bit of a premium around here, and a few people put cones outside their house to reserve themselves a parking space... I'm not keen on that, it's a bit selfish, but each to their own. I got back from the supermarket today to find my neighbour across the street couldn't get a space outside their house, so they put their cones outside our house... I had to park a 5 min walk away, carry 6 bags of shopping and a 9 week old dd.

So, is it just not on, or do I need to get out more (reserving my parking space before I go of course )?

move into the space NOW!

MrsJohnDeere · 04/03/2010 13:55

Move the cones next time!

GetOrfMoiLand · 04/03/2010 13:57

Lol whoami - no I so do not always have the answer.

I am ususally open mouthed like a goldfish re any type of confrontation, and then wake up bang in the middle of the night with a perfect retort (14 hours after the event).

swanandduck · 04/03/2010 13:59

Leave them in his garden with a note saying 'someone threw your traffic cones on the road outside our house. I nearly drove over them. I hope I didn't do any damage'

Regards

OMG - I would have been furious to come home to find someone had put cones outside MY house for themselves to park in the space. I know that everyone pays their road tax and can park where they like (within the law) but that is just ridiculous.
Now you've let him/her do it once, they'll do it again, so you need to have words with them - either that or steal the cones!

bernadetteoflourdes · 04/03/2010 14:00

You can borrow my yellow wheel clamp,I keep one handy in the glove compartment for just these contingencies. Clamp trumps cone in my book or has anyone got a tow truck?

BurnyHill · 04/03/2010 14:01

Do you have a recycling box? You could put his cone in with all the other plastics and watch him sneak over the road to retrieve it!

BurnyHill · 04/03/2010 14:02

You have your own clamp?! What do you use it for (if not dumb question!)?

bernadetteoflourdes · 04/03/2010 14:03

Early learning Centre have a cute set of orange cones buy these, use them and you will fit right in with the rest of the street.

WhoIsAsking · 04/03/2010 14:03

swanandduck - I read that note as signed by Headfairy (Age 49) haha.

Anyway - yeah, move the cones. My nan's next door neighbour is an utter, utter bastard and he does this sort of shit all the time.

bernadetteoflourdes · 04/03/2010 14:06

I met a hairy clamper at a key party, he gave me his clamp as a token of appreciation.

DecorHate · 04/03/2010 14:09

We have this on our road too - mostly people do it only when they are having a skip delivered or builders need to park nearby to unload, etc. which I think is fair enough. One woman does it just to reserve a space by her house but she is elderly so perhaps understandable (though I do think that she feels incapable of walking a few yards she shouldn't really be driving still but hey ho...)

One couple who did use to put cones out to reserve a space have stopped - perhaps because the cones kept getting ignored .

I think it is a particularly annoying and selfish thing to do when you put them outside someone elses house! I have to say I was a bit tempted to get cones myself at one stage when I was pregnant with dc3 - I was dreading trying to find a parking space once the baby arrived but dh did point out that it would just get ridiculous if everyone did it...

OP I would definitely have moved the cones in this case. And if there had not been a space outside the house I would have double-parked briefly to unload the shopping and then parked elsewhere (providing it wouldn't obstruct traffic obv)

WhoIsAsking · 04/03/2010 14:10

Everywhere I go today it's bloody clamps.

HeadFairy · 04/03/2010 14:20

Right, I've moved the car. I took dd with me so if he came out of his house he would take pity on me (coward that I am!) If you hear stories of parking rage coming from Reigate then you'll know I've started something!

Well done. Start as you mean to go on!

gagamama · 04/03/2010 14:23

I second the dropping a note through their door to say thanks idea, also the cones in the recycling bin idea!

Perhaps you could join him at his own game or even [[http://www.allpark.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=66_57_21&products_id=71 go one better]!

gagamama · 04/03/2010 14:24

That should be go one better!

PureAsTheColdDrivenSnow · 04/03/2010 14:25

The only acceptable reason for putting cones outside your house that I can think of would be if you had a removals lorry, or large building works going on, and needed to reserve the space, but I think you have to apply to the council for this (not sure, sorry)

So yes, agree with everybody who said YABU to have parked elsewhere

he's a cheeky git.. at least you'll remember this for next time

expatinscotland · 04/03/2010 14:26

People like this are morons. It's a major reason why I'll never live in a place without a designated car park or driveway again.

I'd move the cones, park and just keep doing that.

Fuck confronting them.

Just don't give into their moronness.

groundhogs · 04/03/2010 14:28

Good for you! I'd burn his flaming cones....

No actually I wouldn't. I'd have taken the cones inside my house, and wait until he comes looking for them....

THEN I'd ask him the question posed by Getorf. I would follow up with a, 'Do this outside my house again and I'll be reporting you, and your stolen cones to the relevant authority.'

Tell him you'll film him and put it on You-Tube too...

You are now prepared if this ever happens again... The power of MN will set you free...

blonde36er · 04/03/2010 14:31

I'd have moved the cones, parked, then put his cones back round my parked car
