Never done this WBD dressing up malarky before.
DD wants to go as the hungry caterpillar. In a "mummy" sleeping bag.

My objections are...

I haven't got a sleeping bag, I can't afford to buy one and then turn it into a caterpillar costume.

I can't see how she can move around/do any work dressed like this

She'll just use it as an excuse to have a nap

The whole thing seems pointless to me...Am I being a misery?

No you are not! My DS (6) wants to go as Teggs the astrosaur, basically a stegasaurus with a space suit , how the *^!& am I supposed to amke that on four days notice????????????????????????

JustMoon · 01/03/2010 16:42

I have cheated by the way, I have now shop bought a fantastic Mr Fox outfit as this is also one of his favourites. [big fat cheat emoticon]

LadyGaggia · 01/03/2010 16:49

Where did you get it from?
Tried to get DD go as Hermione Granger as then I could get away with a cloak and a twig for a wand...She was having none of it

i said to school
oh fgs can we do something different than just dressing up
and they did.
we are having a bedtime story thing
kids go back to sch in pjs wiht hot choc etc and have stories read to em

5Foot5 · 01/03/2010 16:53

I always thought WBD looked quite good fun actually. They don't have to be in an elaborate costume.

First time I ever heard of it was when DD was in pre-school and because I didn't get the letter straight away we only had about 24 hours notice. I just put her in a red cardigan and let her take a basket full of plastic play food and say she was Red Riding Hood.

Do the kids still get a free book token?

muggglewump · 01/03/2010 16:53

YANBU.
DD brought the letter home today and it's a risk trying to order something now as it probably won't arrive.

I'm even more annoyed as I wrote to the head teacher just last month about this very issue of springing days where different clothes are needed on parents.

I think we're going for the men's looking clothes (boys stuff from charity shop) with a fake beard and some cornflakes/popcorn stuck on it, a la Mr Twit.

DD's not happy, but I can't think of anything else.

LadyGaggia · 01/03/2010 16:54

Are you on PTA Mrs P?
I knew there must be some benefit with being on the PTA dammit

Everyone in my daughter's primary school used to go as disney princesses. Oh, except I did the old cloak-and-twig Hermione trick

JustMoon · 01/03/2010 16:57

Got the outfit on Ebay, paid extra for next day delivery. I bet it looks rubbish but I'm past caring!

I wouldn't mind if they gave you a few weeks notice but four days? We had family parties this weekend and I work full time, do they expect me to sit up sewing all night with all the handy costume making stuff I just have lying around?

SparklyJules · 01/03/2010 16:58

When is it? I'm panicking now cos our school have a nasty habit of springing "dressing up days" on us at 24 hrs notice - not great for working parents!

Also - I think it's lazy of the school. I like what Mrs Potiphar did - although our school's headmistress wouldn't listen to a parent and change her plans! I might try it next time tho!!

shockers · 01/03/2010 16:58

Love the Mr Twit idea and am going to copy it as the staff dress up too at my school!

blametheparents · 01/03/2010 16:58

Go as George form George's Marvellous Medicine
Take in a bucket filled with potions (ie plastic bottles with coloured water in them)
Jut wear jeans and a t-shirt
Voila!

ShauntheSheep · 01/03/2010 16:59

So thankful dd has decided to go as the Worst Witch this year making good use of last years Halloween Costume . We work backwards from whats in the heap in the corner dressing up area and think of a character to match.

Last year she went as Lola. I did a drip drip from well in advance of how much she loves Charlie nad Lola and wouldnt she look great as Lola etc etc and it paid off in teh end as she thought it was all her own idea .

TheCrackFox · 01/03/2010 17:00

YANBU.

I am a SAHM and there is absolutely no way that I could rustle up an outfit with 4 days notice (would need 4 months TBH). I have no idea how WOHMs cope with it all TBH.

IMO children are perfectly capable at enjoying books without the need to dress up.

shockers · 01/03/2010 17:03

Pippi Longstocking is an easy one for girls with longish hair. Stripey tights and pipe cleaners in their plaits.

Horrid Henry for boys.

Ears on a headband and a tail made out of a stuffed stocking with appropriately coloured clothing for just about any animal (and a dollop of face paint).

MrsNetz · 01/03/2010 17:05

Yrnbu and omg forgot all about it had plenty of notice to order something from eBay (can't sew to save life!!).

Our nursery doing it gotta dress daughter and son before Wednesday!!! Aaaarrraaagh

thx for reminder ..

muggglewump · 01/03/2010 17:11

DD is now upset because she wants to be a girl character.

Oh god. We don't have stripy tights, she's never read that book, and I can't get fecking stripy tights as I live in a pants town with no kids clothes shops and I'm working the rest of the week.

Another letter to Headmaster is in order.

I made this point last month, of working parents/living in badly stocked town, and could we please at least have a weekend included in planning, and enough time to order online.

COSTUMES IS LAZY

MAKE THEM DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT

BendyBob · 01/03/2010 17:17

Oh god. Hell thy name is WBD. I'd so love to meet the person who came up with it. To shake them warmly by the throat.

muggglewump · 01/03/2010 17:17

Actually I have a green Mummy bag, but it's huge, DD would trip over and no way am I hacking it up to make it fit!

LadyGaggia · 01/03/2010 20:14

Mugglewump I your green mummy bag

I am trying to convince DD that she could be the worst witch, thank you ShauntheSheep.
We have witchy outfit, we have stripy pumpkin patch tights.

Just have to borrow books from library and read them to DD so that she knows who the hell she is supposed to be.

I prefer pj slumber party idea...I wouldn't even have to get her dressed!
Lie in!

I have always thought this whole dressing up thing sounded like a total nuisance and used to feel to pleased that my schools didn't ask teh kids to do it.

And now this year, we have to do it!

I am Big Time Fed Up about it already.

AngryPixie · 01/03/2010 20:39

We did worst witch this year too, one of my floaty black tops (looked like a dress on dd) red belt, boots, socks (falling down) 2 plaits and a lopsided witches hat.

We've also done Susan (or similar) from the secret 7
(jeans, T-shirt, and SS badge)

Silky from the far away tree
(bog standard non Disney fairy outfit from dressing up box)

Veruka Salt (sp) from Charlie & the chocolate factory
Glitzy party dress & faux fur Monsoon wrap thing (hideous present from MIL)

Delphi (ballerina from the Darcey Bussell books)
Her own ballet outfit, but a bugger to go to the loo in!
