to wish I hadn't called my daughter Ruby?

When me and DH chose her name 6 years ago, we didn't know any Rubys (or any kids for that matter!) and liked the feisty sound of it. We actually thought we were being pretty original.

It was the MOST popular girl's name in 2007, 2nd in 2008, and there are 4 others in her year at school.

Am I being unreasonable to wish I'd called her something a bit less, well, common?

She has two lovely middle names and to my shame I've even asked her if she fancies being called one of these instead.

I know I'm being an awful snob, and I do still like the name but what do you all think?

I'm a Sarah, one of best mates is called Sarah too, and we were at school with umpteen more Sarahs; having the same name doesn't bother us in the least :)

Our youngest is an Eve (although we spell it the Irish way), her best friend at Montessori is also Eve, there are two Avas there too, out of 18 kids in total.

I don't see the problem with names being popular, it's just proof of how lovely the name is :o

My birthing partners dog is called Ruby! :) Typical...especially as i was going to use her name for Rubys middle name!

I heard on the radio recently that more boys are now being named Brooklyn than Tim or Timothy (in all their respective spelling variations) Shock

miacat · 17/01/2011 07:18

Brooklyn...who the hell would use that name!? It's like 'Ferrari' or 'Chanel'. I live on a council estate. We have 5 primary schools in our side of the city alone and i've never heard of a Brooklyn, actually. I'm sure there are some. I probably just don't mix with 'those kinds of mothers hahaha :o

You won't meet these Brooklyns for another few years as the survey was looking at boys named in the last year, they won't be in school for a while.

Anyfucker, I also know a Ruby & Pearl (twins). Also when my daughter was born, there were triplets born in the hospital called Ruby, Pearl & Diamond. Diamond was a boy.

There were five Nestas in my class as a girl but its not so common now and I can't imagine being called anything else. Everyone calls me Nest anyway or Nesty which is affectionate and makes me happy.

Ruby is a lovely name and evokes beautiful gleaming jewels whenever you say it.

I know this is an old thread, but, I have an Ava, I liked the name but had my reservations, I wanted to call her Aoife, (prob just as common in Ireland anyway) but my mum and partner talked me out of it and just made such a fuss I backed down and called her Ava, now she just gets lumped in with every other Ava, Eva, Evie, its a bit annoying, at her dance class she was one of 6 Avas!! To make it worse dd1 and ds have fairly unusual names, and I have never met another child with dd1s name and I think only one with ds's name....oh well, lesson learned, number 4s name will not be open for debate!

tallulah · 17/01/2011 10:23

We wanted to call DD2 Isabella but realised how popular it was becoming.

So we picked a name that we thought was unusual. Everyone says "oh that's lovely, never heard that before". She is now 3 and in a swimming class of 4 girls- one of them shares her name. Everywhere we go we come across another one. We were shouting at her to come out of a river and this other little girl turned round. Yep, same name.

The only consolation is that all the other names we'd considered (bar one that DH vetoed) have all turned up in her nursery class, so whatever we'd gone for we'd have had the same problem.

What name would you choose if you could have your time again, OP?
