to think that pubs are no place for kids

Dropped into a pub at about 3am last Sat for a late lunch on way home from funeral. The place was full of children whose parents were drinking and watching telly while the kids ran around. Surely there are better things to do with children at the weekend than plonking them in a corner with a bottle of pop and a packet of crisps while you watch the sports on a big screen.

Not just "drinkers" pubs and "family" pubs.

There are (thankfully) still some pubs around which are "regulars" pubs and serve the local community, everyone in there knows each other, the kids are all neighbours.

Pubs like that often seem rough as anything to people who aren't regulars. But in fact is social meeting place for everyone. Fair enough.

Up to pub and clients what "sort" it is. People wandering in from outside for one drink can't judge. They don't know the landlord, the customers, anything.

It's a bit crap if it is every weekend and the kids are bored and fed up, but every once in a while won't hurt. Kids generally like the idea of doing something so 'grown up'. I have happy memories of crisps and coke in proper glass bottles when I was a kid, and DH apparently used to get shandies at 6

I remember a very posh friend at uni being horrified when we were walking past a pub with that smell of stale beer and another friend and I both commenting that it reminded of our childhoods

But then her dad was an alcoholic and my step-dad was a felonious bastard so not that great, but still, some happy memories , and we are both well adjusted, middle class professionals now

I am a single Mum and I am taking my two children to the pub for Sunday lunch today. we are veggie, the pub is veggie and quite 'alternative' but my two dc love it. I have a 10 year age difference between my children so its good to spend time together like this. They get to eat different meals, I get a meal without cooking and afterwards we are off to local art gallery.

So people shouldn't go to pubs or shops with their children then, I think Children should be removed from all public places then all the able bodied adults can rush about or have a drink in silence
