to expect smokers not to smoke right next to pushchairs children?

Would it be unreasonable to ask the to push off?

Stood in a queue for the bus, person stood in front lights up a cigarette, as does his mate. Wind blowing in my direction where I'm stood with pushchair and pre-schooler inhaling all their toxic fumes. I can't leave the queue because I will loose my place (pushchair places are limited and on a first come first serve basis), so I reposition the pushchair and try to move DS1 as out of the way as poss.

Would it have been unreasonable for me to ask them to stop/move? I didn't say anything at the time because I didn't feel I had a right to, but on second thoughts, maybe I did?

I think its something to do with the structure of the bus stop. If it has 3 sides and a roof you cant smoke in it, one or two sides are ok. (i think)

mamsnet · 24/02/2010 14:21

I would have asked them nicely if they wouldn't mind standing behind me so that the kids didn't get the smoke... even saying that I would, of course, let them on before me..

The lack of common courtesy on their part would be proper pissing me off though.. so having said that I mightn't be calm enough to ask nicely!!

happymatleave · 24/02/2010 14:34

YABU why didn't you just move? I don't smoke and would not like anyone smoking around my children, but I think it's taking it too far to say that people should not be able to smoke outside while waiting for a bus.

BattyKoda · 24/02/2010 14:41

I explained why I couldn't move happymatleave.

youremindmeofthebabe - In that case it only had one side and a roof so not illegal. Can't find any clear information about it on the web though.

mamsnet - I think thats why it's been playing on my mind, why didn't they just think? When holding a cigarette it is directly at a childs/pushchair level. It's not fair

The OP couldn't move because she was in a queue. You can't always avoid smoke, unfortunately.

In these sorts of circumstances if I'm with DH he will start making derogatory comments about drug addicts and their filthy habits. This might be accompanied by a dramatic impersonation of someone in the last stages of TB

OTTMummA · 24/02/2010 14:43

theres not many things i hate more than seeing a woman/man pushing s baby in a buggy with a cig in hand [shudder emoticon]

BattyKoda · 24/02/2010 14:43

Haha Grimma, can I borrow him??

OP posts:
cakeywakey · 24/02/2010 14:46

It is horrible but, as other posters have said, not illegal. I really hate it when people just indiscrimnately flick their still lit butts around as well. It's just thoughtless and could be quite dangerous - arseholes. Put it on the floor and stub it ot properly if there's no ashtray to put it out in - although they could then be done for littering if they don't pick it up and take it with them of course

swanandduck · 24/02/2010 14:46

How could she move if she was in the queue for the bus?

swanandduck · 24/02/2010 14:47

Sorry, that was addressed to happymatleave.

happymatleave · 24/02/2010 14:49

She could have moved the pushchair to one side or turned it around as someone else has already suggested. I know it's not nice but I can't see how outside with the wind blowing it would have been that bad.

Riven Stupid prick

I have already said that I tried to repostion the pushchair, but we were in the queue just outside of the shelter so I didn't really want DS1 stood in the rain and the pushchair with DS2 in it facing the rain (Didn't have a raincover, my fault!).

BattyKoda · 24/02/2010 14:53

(that was aimed at the man Riven, not you!!)

OP posts:
madhairday · 24/02/2010 15:11

Riven oh I am with you. We go to school along a canal towpath so if someone is smoking in front we can't avoid it, no where to go unless we fancy a swim

don't get me going on smoking in bus shelters. I will be very boring and go on for a long time.

VinegarTits · 24/02/2010 15:23

I agree with Riven, soon as its banned outside the better, if you want to polute your lungs, do it in your own home

slightlystressed · 24/02/2010 15:33

"filthy, smoking, selfish, bastards"

"were being very inconsiderate (as smokers often are)."

WHy exactly is it OK to make these nasty generalisations about a whole group of people.

Is it OK to say all drug addicts are nasty ugly shoplifters, or all alcoholics are nasty, aggressive pink faced wankers??? Of course not.

As for the smell of smoke, alot of smokers wont smell it themselves and dont really realise how strong it can be for other people, it was only when I gave up smoking that I could smell smoke.

And no Im not inconsiderate or filthy or selfish or a bastard. Thank you.

hazeyjane · 24/02/2010 15:46

Its not necessarily the smell though, it can also be the fact that if you have lung problems or asthma, standing next to someone puffing smoke at you can make your chest hurt, or bring on wheezing. As others have said, it might be worth asking them politely if they can stop or move if it happens again.

YABU - sorry. It is a bit inconsiderate of them not to notice the children, but it's not illegal and if you find it that offensive you should move, and if that means losing your place in the bus queue then so be it. A few seconds of smoke won't hurt anyone.

If it gets banned in public places/bus stops etc, then it's a totally different matter and you can rightfully be outraged, but in the meantime, life's too short!

Sassybeast · 24/02/2010 16:00

YANBU. Can't wait til smoking is banned completely in public. People are more than welcome to poison themselves and their own private space with their filty habit but I object to them poisoning space which is also MINE.

2shoes · 24/02/2010 16:01

yabu
either move or ask them to
hardly a big deal.
shocking as it may seem all smokers are not nasty.
but you are in the street with all the fumes!!

shockers · 24/02/2010 16:08

I think I would have asked if was possible to change places with them as the smoke was blowing backwards... in a friendly almost apologetic manner whilst berating them inwardly.

yummyyummyyummy · 24/02/2010 16:09

YABU
You expect them to give up their place in the queue rather than you ?
If a smoker cares so little about their own health then they are hardly going to care about your childrens'

SpringHeeledJack · 24/02/2010 16:14

Riven sorry if that upset you...I just meant that life shouldn't be wasted worrying about trivia if at all possible.

fwiw, I used to live in East London where everyone smoked at bus stops- I think it was the law

One day a Nanna flicked her ash in my pfb's posh pram by mistake
