have been blardy brilliant? and actually, watching the halfpipe, ski cross, etc have been pretty damn exciting - and the critics should shut the hell up ?

ps. though i don't fancy Shaun White at all, some of the blokes in the crowd have been quite fit actually.

I've really been enjoying them too.

MyCatIsABastard · 23/02/2010 22:41

They are fantastic. Just watched the skier cross (womens) and it was great!

SinginHinny · 23/02/2010 22:49

I have become obsessed with Ski Cross. I have loved these Olympics so very, very much.

AnyFucker · 23/02/2010 22:52

it's been great

notnowbernard · 23/02/2010 22:54

DP is obsessed with the curling...

I have discovered a sport more boring than snooker

AnyFucker · 23/02/2010 22:56

oh yeah, except the curling

ILIVEONBENEFITS · 23/02/2010 22:58

my pals dad hates curling with a passion my wife can only dream about. He always rants the same thing when he sees it.

"One guy hurls a stane doon the fuckin' ice and the next knocks it oot again. Then he hurls anither fuckin' stane along and the next guy knocks it oot again.Fucker tae go last is the winner"

RedbinDippers · 23/02/2010 23:02

The ski cross was great.

thumbwitch · 23/02/2010 23:06

at curling - so true but still funny. However, I don't mind watching it - probably as a result of watching lots of Crown Bowls with my grandpa when I was young.

I love the Winter Olympics - being in Australia, we are seeing a slightly different focus here (lots of womens' snowboarding for e.g.) but it's still good and we still got to see Amy Williams win the Women's Skeleton (no interview with her though, only with the 2 disillusioned Aussies)

Slartybartfast · 23/02/2010 23:06

i dont understnad curling,
but we did win the gold 8 years ago, as i keep telling anyone who will ask.

am too enjoying it, particularly the ski cross .. exciting, it looks so much fun

what are critics saying?

cakewench · 23/02/2010 23:15

I love them! I have no idea why people are criticising them. Is it because GB aren't winning much?

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 23/02/2010 23:18

I am loving the winter olympics, though the curling is a bit disheartening this time round. The two-man bob was thrilling, though I think the luge and skeleton bob competitors are either nuts or outrageously brave. But huge kudos to Amy Williams for winning gold!

The figure skating's been good so far (I still have the ice dance finals to watch on sky+).

Alambil · 23/02/2010 23:37

I have really enjoyed the snowboard cross and halfpipe and speed skating

TheLadyEvenstar · 23/02/2010 23:41
NoahAndTheWhale · 23/02/2010 23:41

I am enjoying them a lot. Love ice-skating and anything that goes fast downhill.

And the halfpipe with the person with great red hair who won.

displayuntilbestbefore · 23/02/2010 23:48

I think they're great. Vancouver is a fabulous place to host them - even if they have had to get helicopters to drop in lots of snow for various events
The village the athletes are staying in apparently started off costing around 200 million dollars but the costs have now topped 1.2 billion dollars!

Bigpants1 · 24/02/2010 02:31

Am too enjoying the Olympics-staying up waaaay too late every night.
Last few nights have watched the Ice-skating and becoming increasingly annoyed with Robin Cousins saying, "good girl" each time a female competitor completes a sequence.
Surprised hes not throwing them a dog-biscuit at the end of the routine instead of flowers and teddy-bears!

HerHonesty · 24/02/2010 03:06

nope. the whole debacle has made me reconsider the whole point of the winter olympics. i mean lets face it, its actually a games for the rich and famous countries with a smattering of former eastern european countries whose compettitors are actually born and bred yanks who went on the search for long lost slovakian relatives cos they werent good enough for the american team. the odd appearance of a jamaican bobsleigh team is not enough to convince me otherwise...

madwomanintheattic · 24/02/2010 03:59

korea doing well then...

lol @ thumbwitch - we're in canada and i had to post on mn and ask if amy w had won as they cut the feed once the canadians were out

nooka · 24/02/2010 04:15

Um, the Winter Olympics are generally for people from cold countries. Of course the richer countries are more likely to win, but that's true for any top level sporting event, because many sports are very expensive to participate in at the top level.

Why do you say that the Eastern European teams are all ex-American? There are a large number of Australian, Canadian and American competitors who originate from Eastern Europe - are there really that many the other way around?

I live in Canada now, and these are the sports that ordinary people play and are passionate about. It's been really fun at work because often people actually know the athletes (plus they can explain to me how things like Ice Hockey and Curling really work and the skills involved). I'm looking forward to the Paralympics too because some of the athletes came and spoke to us at work (we are one of the sponsors) and they were fab. Colleagues who work in Vancouver have said that it is crazy in the city, although everyone was really gutted that Canada lost to the US at he weekend.

EggyAllenPoe · 24/02/2010 18:34

the crtiticsim was based around

  1. not enough snow - which meant they had to re-schedule some of the events, and truck snow from elsewhere. Hardly within the control of the organisers?

  2. someone dying on the luge track. i think this is just a very dangerous sport....

the british bobsled team overturned, and when asked about it said 'ah well, that's what happen when you don't steer properly..' or words to that effect.

i think realistically most winter sports involve lots of kit, and any sport involving kit is out of the price range of the third world. (think: why does the Uk do well in cycling/ rowing? - because these are sports where having the right stuff is super-impotant..)

my BIl is involved in London 2012 and was sent over here to se the preparations - we have been playing with Quatchi, MukMuk and Sumi

don't know where Miga went.

tis crazy lol, but in a good way - i have to wear olympic gear to work for the next two days, and i work in a bank Team Spirit! i spent a while today pondering whether lloyds tsb staff will be decked out in red and white and blue in 2012...

ds1 has a sumi - he won it for being 2nd best player at an ice hockey match lol (he can barely skate tbh) the dd's are most miffed and keep mithering for a mascot each. dh says we'll buy them next week in the sales (No Team Spirit lol)

nooka · 25/02/2010 03:40

Loads of people have been wearing hockey gear for the last couple of weeks here, and we have had several wear red days. The office is covered with Go Canada and red and white bunting - our office in Vancouver on the other hand has been pretty much closed!

5Foot5 · 25/02/2010 13:24

If only it wasn't for the wretched curling!

Earlier on I really enjoyed the downhill skiing and I especially liked that event where they set off four people on snowboards all at the same time.

But usually the only time we have to catch up is later on at night and for the last week it seems that the only damn thing on is curling. They start off by telling you all the events they will be covering, but then when they put up the timetable it seems that the good stuff is not on until the wee small hours and the only thing before my bedtime is bl88dy bowls on ice!
