to wonder why people troll?

the easy answer is of course for attention, but just scanning the dizzymare thread and I just dont get it. having been taken in a couple of times Im quite cynical now and try not to get too involved, but thats really sad. Ive had a lot of support from mn over the years, and its a shame that people like CVQ and dizzymare ruin it for those who really need help and support.

the medium and immediacy make trolling easy

psychomum5 · 20/02/2010 20:44

I can only think it is like some form of drug to them. I would like to think also that it is because they are mentally ill and in need of some form of help, but I know many people who are mentally ill, and doing things like trolling in the way that CvQ and dizzymare and other high profile ones have would never ever occur to them, in fact, they are normally so badly trying to just survive day in and day out with their own lives and families, trolling would be impossible anyway.

it leads me to think that trolls (the evil ones, not the funny types like we occasionally have....they are the type we all need for light relief) but the evil type I am led to think have some type of personality disorder, or are narsicistic.

BitOfFun · 20/02/2010 20:48

That's my feeling too, psychomum.

scottishmummy · 20/02/2010 20:55

some people have vile motives but doesnt make them mentally ill.sometimes mental illness gets demonised or erroneously cited as reason for bad or hard to understand behaviours.so called normal folk have bad habits too

some folk are fuckwits
no diagnostic criteria,no mental illness.
just fuckwittery

queenoftheslatterns · 20/02/2010 20:57

i wonder whether they wake up one day and say "I'm going to say that my partner beat me today" "oooh, I havent had a dash to the hospital for a couple of weeks"

fuckwits, damn good word for them!!

scottishmummy · 20/02/2010 21:05

imo,low self esteem and need to big up narrative to compensate probably contributory factors.

lets face it the emotive and high octane posts generate response, which in itself feeds an insecure ego.so negative reinforcement, the more chaotic and dramatic events are the more the troll gets responses

shame when genuine goodwill and emapthy is manipulated

thehillsarealive · 20/02/2010 21:48

QOS - yes it is sad.

Running a forum is mostly fun but often harrowing thing to do - and people like the crazy trolls who have elaborate stories are not too common, but have many personalities and seem to sign up with them. As an administrator we took lengths to ban and delete them and it worked (mostly) but the everyday poster cant see IP addresses or other 'alarms' that HQ can, which is why we get duped on here.

SM - fuckwittery is one of my favourite words

queenoftheslatterns · 20/02/2010 22:12

i just feel so sorry for the people who get pulled in by these people and i hate the shouts of "troll" that geet bandied around after something like this happens if a newbie posts asking for support.

OP posts:
scottishmummy · 20/02/2010 22:21

people need to have internet savvy, and no one is compelled to share and post.

and some tenacious posters have spotted the trolls,so kind of warning others

but yes the hysterical troll patrol are irksome

cornsilk · 20/02/2010 22:45

This sounds a bit weird but I'm a bit paranoid that someone on here thinks I'm a troll. I've noticed a couple of times when I'm on a thread they'll come on just to post to a poster I'm talking to 'xxx I have emailed you' etc.

scottishmummy · 20/02/2010 22:51

ach dont sweat it,keep posting.some will like your posts some will loathe them, thats how it goes

thehillsarealive · 20/02/2010 22:53

cornsilk - I am quite new on here and I have no idea how to bookmark my place (if you can on threads) how to see who is new and who has posted before. I wouldnt take it personally or worry about it.

I tend to take everything on face value and if i want to post i will - if I think people are just out for an argument i wont (unless it offends me hugely)and if that bothers others. fuck 'em.

sorry for slight hi jack

cornsilk · 20/02/2010 22:54

Yeah suppose so SM.

cornsilk · 20/02/2010 22:57

Hillsarealive you are right and I am being daft.

nannynick · 20/02/2010 23:05

cornsilk - it takes time to become accepted on here. I've been here since 2005 I think... yet still I'm probably thought of as being a bit odd by some

Hillsarealive - by posting on a thread you sort of bookmark it, as you can click the Threads: I'm On link and see a list of message threads you have posted on over the past few days.

Why do people troll? Well I think it's that some people crave attention. Be that positive or negative attention. So they post a sob story or whatever to get other people to give them attention. Can be hard to pick out the real people who need help and those who are attention seeking. I tend to go with the view that everyone is honest to start with, thus I may end up talking to a troll.

psychomum5 · 20/02/2010 23:24

cornsilk, how long have you been on here??

I figure you as one of the longer standing members. are you not??

cornsilk · 20/02/2010 23:27

lol psycho only about 3 years (I think.) When I worked only a day a week I was always on here.

cornsilk · 20/02/2010 23:28

what about you psycho? How long have you been here?

psychomum5 · 20/02/2010 23:31

well you are then, considering how many newbies we have, and how many of the real oldies seem to be depleted nowadays.

That said, I have been here since 2005 this month, and I still feel like a newbie occasionally compared to some, so maybe not all the proper oldies did abscond.

you need to stop working.....you not here enough clearly

cornsilk · 20/02/2010 23:36

lol I still manage to spend plenty of time online!
Am considering asking MNHQ to ban me till Easter as I have so much work I need to do and always end up clicking on to here when I'm on the PC. I wish they did special controls so we could only go on in set times.

BlackLetterDay · 20/02/2010 23:43

I can't really understand the mentality of long term trolls like cvq and dizzymare tbh. Could it be money? trying to spin a story that will eventually lead to some kind of fund?

Obviously to be able to have a convincing persona and backstory etc they must have thought about it quite a lot. Maybe they are a bit unbalanced or have suffered a previous trauma etc, I have no freaking clue. I must admit I thought "yer right" about cvq, dizzymare and ethanchristopher immediately. I am not brave enough or emotionaly robust enough to take the pasting that goes with troll outing though , I find it hard enough to go back and see what people have posted on even innocuos threads I started lol.

cornsilk · 20/02/2010 23:46

I didn't pick up on dizzymare at all. I had the lightbulb moment about cvq once it was pointed out. Ethanchristopher wasn't in the same league really.
