I am a terrible cook. really, truly awful. I can barely boil an egg. but last week I made some currant buns, on sunday ds and I made some cookies and fairy cakes.

today I hovered over the ready-made pancake mix but instead left it, and have just made a batch of truly lovely pancakes. am preening. a LOT!

currant buns i think is v impressive! well done you. never had ready made pancakes but am sure the from scratch ones are much tastier!

choosyfloosy · 16/02/2010 19:02

erm

erm

erm

don't want to rain on your parade but

a very quiet yabu

because to be honest i think taking a frozen pizza out of its packaging is more complicated than making pancakes

having said that, mine are always mediocre to crap

differentID · 16/02/2010 19:02

yay! So how many did N manage to eat?

queenoftheslatterns · 16/02/2010 19:03

its just that I am so bad. lots of people say that they cant cook, but i really cant. ds refuses to eat meals I cook for him.

craig made a huge mountain of pancakes for us

differentID · 16/02/2010 19:07

for both N easting food his mummy has cooked and Craig for making the mountain for trinity!

BigMomma3 · 16/02/2010 19:11

Well done! I used to think I was a crap cook as well until I actually TRIED it!!

Ready made mix is sooo lazy IMHO, only takes a minute to DIY. Mind you we have pancakes a few times a week on average for breakfast. DCs love choc chip ones with a banana sliced on top covered in golden syrup. Heavenly .

BrahmsThirdRacket · 16/02/2010 19:18

Hate to piss on your cornflakes, but pancakes are very easy. Even I can make them so they must be.

I'm glad you're happy though!

taffetacat · 16/02/2010 19:40

queen

you go girl

I consider myself a good cook but I don't make pancakes. I don't buy the ready mix either. I am crap at flipping them . I ostrich today and distract the DC.

Maybe you could try crepes next? We lived in the States for a bit when I was a kid and they had this amazing restaurant chain called the Magic Pan that served only crepes. My fave was a kind of beef stew in a crepe. Sounds gross but it was to die for.

taffetacat · 16/02/2010 19:41

.............in fact like a very gourmet version of Findus Crispy Pancakes

differentID · 16/02/2010 19:43

i wonder if that was the inspiration?

LilRedWG · 16/02/2010 19:50

I dunno - you ditch me for the day just so that youcan make pancakes. Humph!

JoeyBettany · 16/02/2010 19:59

yes you should be very proud of your self as I buggered up mine

-not sure why, think I had to high a flame and not enough grease and stupid non-stick pan not being non-stick enough

JoeyBettany · 16/02/2010 20:00

too not to

Jenny79 · 16/02/2010 20:09

YABU
on the other hand if you manage Mousaka, I'll rake it back. :D

rookiemater · 16/02/2010 20:12

This year to save aggro I bought Tesco readymix pancake batter. Big mistake, gooey disgusting and unflippable, DH managed to get a bit of one stuck to the light fitting in the kitchen.

I have made lentil moussaka at the weekend it was disgusting very nutritous

LC200 · 16/02/2010 20:21

I find it much easier to cook moussaka than pancakes. I HATE flipping them, and find it really stressful. Well done you!

diddl · 16/02/2010 20:22

Pancakes aren´t really cooking though are they?
But did you mange to toss them OP?

NonnoMum · 16/02/2010 20:33

I made pancakes from scratch (and feel a little bit preeny too!) It was a Delia recipe.

I think the things with pancakes is that they actually get better as you go. The first one is always a soggy mess, but then when you find your stride (and the pan gets its mojo from the repeated heat etc) then they just get better and better...

(No more cookery tips or comments - am actually quite bad meself...)

GrimmaTheNome · 16/02/2010 20:33

I don't understand the point of pancake mix, when making the batter yourself is so easy. I mean, flour, egg, milk, whisk - childsplay.

The only bit that can go wrong is the actual cooking of them, which applies whatever the source of the batter. All you need is a good non-stick pan, if you're not confident flipping try a medium sized one rather than large.

Anyway QoS, well done for getting it all to work. You are obviously an ex-terrible cook!

Muser · 16/02/2010 20:38

Flipping is easy as long as you let them cook enough. They should be almost completely cooked through, no runny batter on the side facing you. Then you can flip them without them falling apart.

The first 2 will be crap though. Sods law.

queenoftheslatterns · 16/02/2010 20:42

lol, i managed to toss them as well. i think its hard to understand what a big thing it is for the culinary stunted to make something as simple as pancakes from scratch if you are used to cooking and are good at/enjoy it.

OP posts:
taffetacat · 16/02/2010 21:06

@ culinary stunted

I think baking is a great place to start. Its the point I got interested in cooking. Baking is like alchemy - the thrill of something that looks so different when it emerges from the oven is great.

YABU, it's about as tough as making a cup of tea. My tip is add a touch of baking soda (1 tsp) for fluffy pancakes. I hate flat pancakes!
