In thinking that a bus driver shouldn't judge you for catching a bus

DS was awake, getting hungry although not complaining. The cheapest place for me to eat lunch whilst feeding him is about two stops away from where I was - but is right up the top of a hill. So I got on a bus, with the buggy, and using my disabled pass (I have ME - wouldn't have been able to walk up there). He looked at me and said, "I'm only going to X, you know." Feeling slightly embarrassed, I smiled and said, "Yes, can't make it up the hill!".

As he printed off my ticket he said, "You could just walk, you know."

I was using a disabled pass, I wasn't the only person on the bus, and its not as if he was having to go out of his way for me. Am I BU, or was he being rude?

he was being very rude.

especially as you'd used a disabled pass.

what a knob!

AmesBS7 · 16/02/2010 11:30

YANBU, what a twonk.
Is the bus service provided by "First Group" (ie Worst Group) by any chance???

nancy75 · 16/02/2010 11:30

he was rude, if everyone walked we wouldn't need bus drivers!

StealthPolarBear · 16/02/2010 11:30

what an idiot

deloola · 16/02/2010 11:31

Sounds like he needs some training in understanding in disability awareness.

I'd have been a bit shocked his comment too.

thumbwitch · 16/02/2010 11:31

YAsoNBU, he is a complete knobend and you should consider reporting him for being completely rude and having dreadful customer service skills.
for you that you had to put up with such a moronic attitude.

nannynobnobs · 16/02/2010 11:31

He was being an ass... FFS if you used a disabled pass! Maybe because you weren't obviously physically disadvantaged he thought you'd wrestled the pass out of the hands of somebody in a wheelchair.
If everybody walked he wouldn't have a fecking job.

minkulus · 16/02/2010 11:32

What a git!! (the bus driver, not you!).
ME is a bitch. I think because a lot of us look 'normal' it is hard for others to not judge. I have had lots of negatives about being lazy and not teaching my child healthy habits and it is infuriating, but unfortunately part and parcel of dealing with this crappy disease!
I can't wait for all the comments now I am starting to show in my second pregnancy and I will be driving EVERYWHERE!!

itsmeolord · 16/02/2010 11:34

YANBU. The driver was being a cock.

MaggieMaeve · 16/02/2010 11:36

I hope he can read the ROAD SIGNS better than he can read your pass.

Shitemum · 16/02/2010 11:36

I think maybe he saw that you were standing (not in a wheelchair) and able to get on the bus and thought that considering the wait at the stop and the struggle to get the buggy on he'd let you know that it was maybe not worth your trouble waiting and then getting on as you weren't going far. So you'd know next time iyswim.

I have often found it less of a hassle to walk a few blocks than stand at a stop for half an hour in the freezing wind and then struggle to get pram on only to find there is one on already and I have to get baby and shopping out and fold it.

But I don't have ME.
I think maybe he was just ignorant but didn't mean any harm.
But YANBU

AccioPinotGrigio · 16/02/2010 11:37

Sheesh - what the hell has it got to do with him how far you want to ride on his bus. Does he not understand the relationship between having passengers and having a job. Fool.

brightspark2 · 16/02/2010 11:38

Please please complain on the bus company's website - I did last week after a female driver was horribly insensitive to a young mum with a crying toddler and the woman was taken off duty and sent for retraining and reprimanded!

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 16/02/2010 11:38

I've had similar before - not from drivers but from other passengers.

I have a monthly travel card and buses go along our main road almost every 3 minutes so if the DC are tired/ grumpy or it's raining I might jump on for a stop or two.

I've had all kinds of comments from 'in my day children walked everywhere' to ' your children will end up obese'.

ErikaMaye · 16/02/2010 11:43

Minkulus - congrats on your pregnancy I got a lot of comments (pitying and condemning ) when I was pregnant and in my chair. I hope your condition doesn't rebound at all.

Am glad you agree with me... Wondered if I was just being a little over sensitive!!

and that is one of the reasons why i dont use the bus! rude man. do complain

IneedacleanerIamalazyslattern · 16/02/2010 12:33

God he was rude none of his blinking business whether you only want to go one stop.
In fact here because so many people buy all day tickets people hop on and off buses every couple of stops loads.

Rude driver!

Plazaz · 16/02/2010 13:07

YANBU. The driver is there to take you wherever you ask to go, short journey or not. Your reasons for your journey are none of his business. I would complain.

BitOfFun · 16/02/2010 13:11

I wouldn't complain- it's not illegal to be a bit thoughtless. Why couldn't you just point out the obvious to him so he thinks twice next time?

Thanks ErikaMaye! Can't belive I'm doing it again!
Feeling as would be expected, but happy to be able to get out and about. Not in chair now thank goodness and pretty mobile .
Hope this bus incident is a one off and you are getting on OK.

Pikelit · 16/02/2010 13:51

Write to the company - either via the website or find out their contact details and email them. It's not acceptable behaviour and I would challenge the legality of this sort of comment.

ErikaMaye · 16/02/2010 14:03

River and yes, the witty remarks always come to mind after, don't they? If I ever see him again will have a list ready

Minkulus, I am going to take the fact that you are doing it again as confirmation that it is possible to balance a child, ME and pregnancy Another pregnancy not on the cards for a loooooong time, but am doing the typical (and silly) thing of moping as I pack away the smaller clothes!! I hope the rest of your pregnancy goes really smoothly
