I don't actually hate the sport, in fact i quite like watching it but we were meant to be going out for a nice family day to day but now Dh is at the little park near us with DS as we couldn't get out of the house early enough as Dh had to go for a run this morning and we would have to be back for 2pm so that he can watch the build up to the italy v england game and then the game itself, while he sits and drinks lots of beer (it's impossible to watch rugby without drinking).

You don't have a problem with rugby , you have a problem with your DH

Mine manages to watch without drinking. DS1 and he will watch and I will probably watch too.
If it is not a game I want to watch then either I will take DD and go out somewhere else or we will all go out and he will record the game and watch it later.

You need to deal with your Dh and not blame the sport...

Cracking wales v scot game yeserday btw

choufleur · 14/02/2010 11:10

I know pagwatch thing is DH is fine the rest of the time, it's just when big rugby matches are on.

pagwatch · 14/02/2010 11:21

You have my sympathy.

You need to get the six nations schedule and plan lots of days out just for you in advance
Or do what I did. DH and i are taking the kids for three days to Paris to see Eng v France. The match live is way more fun, plus I get three days in Paris, PLUS he is grateful

MaggieMaeve · 14/02/2010 11:22

no yanbu. i just couldn't give even the tiniest tiniest fuck who wins.

MaggieMaeve · 14/02/2010 11:24

but! now I'm single! it can all pass over my head. in dublin last weekedn got chatting briefly to some italian rugby fans (not a chat up situation, they were elderly and with their families, I hadn't known there was rugby on, and they looked like they didn't believe me... but now, I don't have to know about rugby fixtures!!)

so, dump your husbands ladies, the answer is obvious.

pagwatch · 14/02/2010 11:28

Maggie

not all women hate rugby you know

And many of my fav memories from dating DH were on the touch line and in the dining room and bar after rugby matches with the whole team [sigh] and later going to Paris, and to Rome, and now watching DS1 play....
Its a great game

choufleur · 14/02/2010 11:30

as i said i don't actually hate it just the way our lives have to revolve around it, particularly six nations and heinekin cups matches. and DH has the ability to tune out DS when watching rugby so no matter what I'm doing Dh can't do stuff with DS.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 14/02/2010 11:45

I am enjoying the rugby and the Winter Olympics, choufleur - but you can tell your dh from me that it is perfectly possible to watch the rugby without drinking - I managed to watch all of the Wales-Scotland match, and the end of the Ireland-France annihilation match yesterday with nothing more stimulating than a cup of licorice tea.

BelleDameSansMerci · 14/02/2010 11:59

YANBU to hate Rugby (except you obviously don't)!

I loathe all televised sport; I hate football most of all; I hate the "pack" mentality; I hate that it's generally men only events that attract all the money and tv cover.

Rant over

pooexplosionsareimproving · 14/02/2010 12:07

YABU.
men like sport, shocker!

Buddleja · 14/02/2010 12:10

Reading this your OP I thought 'why the hell does he need to go for a run?' Meaning that you couldn't go to the park because he wanted to come back for the match (I've no bother with that as I'm heading out the door now but plan to be back to watch the match)

He's being selfish if he wanted to watch the match then the should have not gone for his run so that you could go out earlier enough to ensure he was back in time

pagwatch · 14/02/2010 12:24

SDTG
YABU to drink licorice tea

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 14/02/2010 12:32

Pag, you dirty beast!![grins]

frakkinaround · 14/02/2010 12:44

Rugby = wonderful game.
Drinking = totally unnecessary and ruins the fun
Liquorice = VILE!

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 14/02/2010 13:40

Licorice tea with egyptian spices - yummy.

Rugby players bottoms and legs - equally yummy!!!

UnquietDad · 14/02/2010 13:44

It's much more civilised than football. And the players can teach those prancing overpaid nancy-boys a thing or two. Footballers roll over and cry if they damage their haircuts. Rugby players keep slamming forward even if they are showering teeth everywhere and one leg is hanging by a gashed and bloodied ligament.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 14/02/2010 13:50

My dad used to play rugby for his college, and got his shoulder dislocated playing against one of the London medical schools. The opposition captain demonstrated to his teammates how to reduce a dislocated shoulder ('Don't worry, this will hurt but not for long, mate'), and then they all carried on with the match!

Buddleja · 14/02/2010 15:02

Jonny may be kicking badly but mmm mmmmmmmmmmm those thighs

Cyb · 14/02/2010 15:06

I cannot stand rugby either.

It remind me of boring wet weekends stuck indoors as a kid while my Dad watched the neverending matches and the squealing Scottish commentators ranted on.

CrowAndAlice · 14/02/2010 15:07

Mine is watching it at the mo.

He is also doing the ironing whilst watching it.

Now THAT's Multitasking ladies .

MaisietheMorningsideCat · 14/02/2010 15:17

Love the game. A thug's game played by gentlemen, whereas football is a gentlemen's game played by thugs goes the saying, and ain't it true! DH used to play at school, university and then until he got too old, and now DS plays for our town. I just love watching it...

I don't agree that you need to drink when you watch a game though, but drinking at every opportunity is a part of British culture that DH and I just don't get.

pagwatch · 14/02/2010 15:21

as it goes, dh and i are watching together and sipping a very nice bottle of champagne. Dh is taking halftime to start preperation for beef wellington supper he is preapring me for valentines...
and I get to watch Danny Care etc..

not shabby for Pag

MaisietheMorningsideCat · 14/02/2010 15:28

Champagne is always allowed

Tanking 10 pints - not

biscuitsmustbedunkedintea · 14/02/2010 15:38

LOL at drinking Champagne during the rugby

Kinda feel sympathy for OP. I'm a rugby loving gal with a rugby loving hubbie (managed to plan our first ever family holiday when DD1 was 10m to France for the World Cup 2yrs ago). DD1 has been brought up a rugby loving girl and it used to be a family occasion to sit at home watching the Six Nations. However now we have DD2 (7wks) and it appears it's up to me to entertain her while he gets to watch the match (and yes with a couple of pints). Wouldn't mind so much but he turns the tv up soooo loud and then claps and jeers V loudly too, it's so out of character for him.

But YABU for hating rugby. Far better than Football

littlemoominmamma · 14/02/2010 16:00

mine is watching too... son plays rugby so life revolves around this sport, gave in to it a long time ago and actually enjoy watching now i know what the hell is going on

GO ENGLAND!!!!
