Ok, so I've had a few - 7 in 2 years but I just can't get it right!! My DH is no longer speaking to me and I can't really blame him for getting mad but with the benefit of hindsight I wouldn't have bought most of them.

Problem is, dd is 2.8 and can't walk far due to low tone and hypermobility so we DO need one. Maybe I should just make do with one of the others AIBU???

For 2 dd's I bought.

1 M&P lie flat pram (wanted a sturdy pram for pfb)
1 old fashioned Maclaren
2 Maclaren Techno's
1 M&P Piliko (wanted a pram sturdier than Maclaren and which lay flat, but not a tank for psb)
1 double buggy which was a very bad pregnancy buy which did not fit in car. Decided it was time to may dd1 walk.

Best buys were the Maclaren's. They did need replacing after about a year because they did a lot of miles, but unbeatable for a heavy toddler. Good on the bus, and fold up easily for the car. They are very bad for newborn babies though, so you do need a lie flat pram. I did try putting dd2 into the Maclaren when she was 2 weeks old, and it was immediately clear that it would not do. You do need at least 2 prams per child or more if you walk lots.

When dd's were small, 3 wheelers were all the rage, which I resisted. You hardly ever see them now, funny how things go in and out of fashion.

make sure you get a chocolate coloured one

Lonnie · 01/04/2010 11:44

After 12 years of motherhood I have come to the firm conclusion that buggies are like shoes you can NEVER have to many..

so no YNBU

oh and I had 14 over 4 kids and 8 years of using them (2 were broken by people driving into them no I am not kidding)

ilove · 01/04/2010 11:46

Must be bexause you bought a colour that blends in to the background Lonnie. Should've bought a chocolate one!

ElleBing · 01/04/2010 11:56

And my DH thinks that I ABU because I want a third pushchair

We had a travel system that was great until LO got too big and the heavy pushchair got even heavier with LO in it. So we bought a lightweight stroller which is now TOO lightweight with LO in it and I can feel the frame buckling when I push it. Serves us right for buying a cheapo £70 jobby but I am married to Ebeneezer Scrooge!

mrsfred · 01/04/2010 12:02

I'm with the majority, I think.

Pilko Pramette for DD1
M&P buggy
M&P three wheeler for long walks

Chameleon bought when DD2 was born, plus
Maclaren double (DD1 was 2.5yrs)

Quinny Buzz bought when we sold our car and couldn't fit any of the prams in the smaller car we were using.

Currently still using the Buzz because the M&P buggy has had it, but I hate it. It doesn't lie flat and is a PIA to fold up and down.

DH has put his foot down and said no more!

Lonnie · 01/04/2010 12:02

heh Ilove it was the bright orange one with one of them lol

CheekyVimtoGal · 01/04/2010 12:08

In 3 and a half years i have had 3 pushchairs!

Graco Deluxe Travel System in Manhatten, which i used for both my DS when they were born.

Britax stroller = That broke christmas eve last year so had to buy a cheapy from Argos and i still use that.

i dont get the need for all these pushchairs!

Rockbird · 01/04/2010 12:14

Dunno how many I've had in just over 2 years...

iCandy Apple - still have, loved it
Grey Techno - sold
Moon Kiss - sold
Bugaboo Bee - sold
Black Techno - love it, main buggy now
Bugaboo Bee - regretted selling, bought this a week later in storage for DC2
Silver Cross Pop - ok. Back up buggy in DH's boot so lightly used.

So 7 in 2 years. Hmm...

NormalityBites · 01/04/2010 12:23

YABU. How different could they possibly be? At least tell me you sold on the others for close to what you paid? I bought one before my DD was born and sold it 2 months later for 90% of the new price. Horrible thing. Never bought another though and I hope I never will!

ronx · 01/04/2010 13:37

I have had five and my son has just turned two.

I use the Maclaren Techno XT every day; the Quinny Buzz if we go for any long walks in the woods or heathland; and a Petite Star Zia which is the only buggy that fits comfortably in the boot of my Smart.

I started off with a M&P Aria, but the handles were too low and it didn't lie flat enough for my NB; picked up a big old M&P thing on eBay for six pounds, but it was a faff to fold down.

moonsquirter · 01/04/2010 13:57

Glad to see I'm not entirely alone in being mystified why people need so many buggies. I only ever had one for my daughter and it was a really cheap mothercare one that did everything and had all accessories included (inc car seat) for a mere £140. Will probably use it for the next baby as well.

If you've got the money and like shiny new things and consumerism, then obviously go for it. Not up to anyone else to criticise how you spend your money. However, please don't try to claim it's necessary when there are suitable buggies are out there for everyone if you just do the research first.

Pikelit · 01/04/2010 14:02

It does occur to me that this compulsive pushchair buying is just part of a need to buy more STUFF. I had 3 over the five years that a pushchair was needed. One of which was a McClaren double. It's up to anyone what they spend their dosh on but for sure, it rarely seems necessary to accumulate all these pushchairs.

deliakate · 01/04/2010 14:07

What is hypermobility?

Rockbird · 01/04/2010 14:22

Firstly moonsquirter, don't be so bloody pompous.

There are very few buggies that do everything. Show me a lie flat, small but sturdy, reversible seated, car seat adaptable, fold in one piece, narrow enough for buses, suitable for newborn but comfortable for occasional use by 3yo pushchair, tall enough for a 6ft father but low enough for a 5ft mother and I'll show you about two out of all the pushchairs on the market.

I researched till I was blue in the face, but since DD was born 2 years ago, there have been modifications and additions to the market which have improved things. I would get slated on here for taking my Apple on the bus because we all know prams aren't allowed on them . Luckily I don't use the blasted things so that's not a concern but it might have been and I would have needed something else.

It's not necessary to accumulate them any more than it's necessary to accumulate handbags or shoes or jewellery or books or anything else that people spend their money on. But if they choose to it's up to them. If you're happy with your boneshakers then fine, of course. But lots of people aren't.

ooojimaflip · 01/04/2010 14:23

moonsquirter - I think there is a problem though in that until you have had a child and a buggy, you don't REALLY know what you need.

hairymonkey · 01/04/2010 19:26

Barking! I've had a techno xlr for ds1 and use for ds2 with buggy board, lies flat, fold easy etc, though was advised to buy it. Most Mums ended up getting a maclaren.
Though did get twin techno when ds2 came along, hardly used it as ds1 too big.
People, buy what you like, just the thought of going buggy shopping fills me with dread.

mintyfresh · 01/04/2010 20:12

FWIW - DH is now speaking to me and agrees that Maclaren is much better than anything else I've had! All other pushchairs bar one (always worth having a spare!) are now sold.

Deliakate - hypermobility affects joints so dd is too flexible and doesn't have much strength hence the need for a pushchair for a while longer yet!

I just wish they had a 'try before you buy' policy with pushchairs. I bought most of mine online and you can't see the flaws until it has been unpacked and road tested

OP posts:
lovechoc · 01/04/2010 20:20

omg, do you have an endless pot of cash for buying buggies???

YABU - IMHO make do with what you have for all the time children actually use them.

We have a silvercross pram which will be getting used for baby no2 soon, and a buggy for the car (cheap toyrus one - was on offer a while ago). Can't imagine buying various prams and buggies, don't even have the spare cash to do this.

xxluckystarxx · 05/04/2011 23:17

Hiya I thought I would input as I'm getting a new buggy on thursday and my husband don't mind as the 1 we are replacing is broken! My daughters 2.5yrs and have got through 6 pushchairs!

The first was a Graco Sterling travel system and bought it not thinking if it was practical or not...I don't drive and was stuck on an Island (only way off it is by car or bus) so was stuck there and there was no way I could get on a bus with it!
I then got Mamas & Paps Beat which was fine til it started going rickety and found that too heavy to get on a bus with...we've since moved to a town where I can walk everywhere. My mother in law now has this pushchair.
Then got a Mothercare Backspin which went back 2 days later as the wheels kept jamming so swapped it for a OBaby Atlas. That was horrific and the mechanism to keep it open kept undoing and folding up whilst my daughter was in it!
Then got a Maclaren Quest which lasted around 11 months and then the mechanism for it to stay open kept undoing, the brakes came undone when on the bus going over a bump or round a corner and the back outer wheels wore down a lot.
I got a pushchair from Tescos - Lola Stroller and had that for 6 months but the wheel fell off it so luckily had the Maclaren still as was fine to keep for dentist visits (mine is up stairs and is usefull to pop down there, put it on my shoulder whilst carrying daughter and go up) so have been using it til I get the replacement on Thursday which will be the Mamas and Papas Pipi after lots of umming and ahhing over several buggies!

it's not my fault I've got through so many but where I live the pavements are so uneven theres also a lot of stairs/steps and I walk around 3 miles every day!
YANBU as I've been through as many although I've only had 2 on the go and soon it'll just be the 1 as I shall get rid of the Maclaren as I hate hate HATE them!!!!!

also I've not paid out a lot for mine...the most was £135 for the Maclaren and that was on offer...also my daughter had money for xmas 09 so that paid for majority of it so in a way you get what you pay for :(

working9while5 · 06/04/2011 01:38

Moonsquirter, MIL bought us an M and P Skate. Very kind of her and was a lovely lie flat pram but ) it was virtually impossible for me to manage on my own with a bad back on public transport (don't drive).

Hence buggy no. 2.

I also had two slings - a Moby Wrap for when he was tiny and needed lots of close cuddling and then a Beco for when he was a bit older and I couldn't manage the wrap on my own.

Not consumerism and too much money, love of shiny new things Hmm, necessity. How was I to know before birth that a) birth would muck up my back and b) just how bloody-minded the pram would be about steering its own course despite my intervention? We researched the stupid things to death. I spent longer looking for a bloody buggy than I did looking for a house!

You learn what you need as you go along. Most people have said they sold their old ones so not sure why it is a mark of their consumerist personalities to be in the market for something that meets their needs vs just struggling on regardless when the thing that seemed to make sense on paper doesn't work out in real life.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 06/04/2011 04:54

I think you're all mad. I have a fairly basic three-wheeler that's taken me through from birth to 2.5 (and will do beyond), and a McLaren Daytripper that I use for travelling. The first needed to have fairly large wheels because I live in a ruralish area with steep hills, and often the pavements are in crap condition or non-existent, and also be small enough to get in and out of most shops, and it did the job. Surely most buggies do that?

xxluckystarxx · 06/04/2011 13:16

working9while5 My pregnancy messed my back up too (I too don't drive so walk everywhere in the large town that I live in) and I still get carpel tunnel over 2 and a half years later! It's fair enough to have 2 on the go but not collect them and have like 10 on the go at the same time just cos theres a new model out...although people do this with phones - have 2 contracts on the go so they have an up to date phone every 6 months I know a lot of people who do this but its up to them.
I tried using a sling with my daughter but she hated it yet got slated as if it was my fault! Oh and also tried breastfeeding but didn't produce any milk at all yet again obviously my fault again...but this is a completely different thread altogether.
