Is that the Keira Knightly one?

Aww, I like it. Granted, Keira was rather toothy and Matthew McFadyen looked like he was about to burst into tears for most of the film, but he still did it for me.

diddl · 13/02/2010 19:24

OMG I loathed it.

KK too young & flighty imo.

MM-what was with that wig??!!

BariatricObama · 13/02/2010 19:24

i only saw the end. matthew mcfadyen was a ridiculous darcy. did he do that verge of tears thing the whole through the film? tedious!

I LOVE the KK one - way better than the shite that is Alison Steadman and Colin Firth with dimple-woman playing Elizabeth.

shonaspurtle · 13/02/2010 19:27

Brenda Blethyn was excellent as Mrs Bennet, and I rather liked Donald Sutherland's country gentleman farmer.

BariatricObama · 13/02/2010 19:27

oh come on . colin firth had virility and suppressed ardour pouring out of his knitted brows.

(ponders, is this a generational thing)

But I have said this before and I say it again now - Colin Firth looks like a suet pudding.

Donald Sutherland's teeth were terrifying though.

BariatricObama · 13/02/2010 19:31

well it is jane austen everyone was a suet pudding

Alison Steadman's Mrs Bennett was ridiculous. And I did prefer Matthew McFadyen to Colin Shirt, whose rumoured sex appeal has always been a bit of a mystery to me.

shonaspurtle · 13/02/2010 19:32

Mmmm. Yes. Actually, I watch the 90s BBC one now, and I do still love it but...it's dated a wee bit somehow. Colin Firth still good though.

I don't know how costume dramas can date, but they do. One's from the 70s/80s are all very frilly for example.

There were a couple of places in the film version where you could imagine MM just breaking down and shagging her there and then. When they had the fight in the folly for example

BariatricObama · 13/02/2010 19:33

no, mm looked like he was going to break down full stop. he did not look capable of an erection.

OP posts:
janeite · 13/02/2010 19:34

Yes - the KK version just oozes sex appeal. It was deffo Austen crossed with Bronte - but all the better for it.

shonaspurtle · 13/02/2010 19:34

Has anyone seen the earlier BBC version with Dr Finlay in a stovepipe hat? Hysterical.

But still oddly good. Tis the source material.

BariatricObama · 13/02/2010 19:36

definitive mr darcy

BariatricObama · 13/02/2010 19:40

hilarious hat and what was with mr darcy's accent?

OP posts:
janeite · 13/02/2010 19:41

I see they didn't research costume very well!

BariatricObama · 13/02/2010 19:42

yes but laurie dahlin laurie!

BrahmsThirdRacket · 13/02/2010 19:43

I much prefer the new Joe Wright version - KK doesn't annoy me at all in it (she does in some other things) and Donald Sutherland is great as Mr Bennet. Really never got the whole Colin Firth mania - he is boring.

Ziggurat · 13/02/2010 19:47

They look as if they've strayed into the Wilkes' picnic in Gone With The Wind.

Team Firth here.

BariatricObama · 13/02/2010 19:52

if you have read the book, colin firth adn the letter scene is to die for

OP posts:
janeite · 13/02/2010 19:58

Erm yes. I have read the book. Colin Firth deffo NOT to die for - would rather have a treacle sponge.

BariatricObama · 13/02/2010 19:59

you just haven't read it properly

OP posts:
Uriel · 13/02/2010 20:00

No, Colin Firth coming out of the lake. As it were.

janeite · 13/02/2010 20:01

I have read it many, many times. Look at my name! In fact, I may read it again tomorrow and try not to think of suet-face as I do so.

BariatricObama · 13/02/2010 20:02

lol @ uriel
