she said that ketchup and HP sauce have to go in the fridge once they are opened.

Or do you all keep yours in the fridge?

We never have and nor did my mum. And DH has never said that we ought to

They should indeed be kept in the fridge for optimum storage.

SawneyBeane · 13/02/2010 18:23

That's why you laugh at your MIL?

You need a hobby, my girl.

It says on out Heinz bottle that it should be refridgerated.

she is a loon, and really you should cut her out of your life forever

gorionine · 13/02/2010 18:23

The very few times I do have ketchup in my house, it goes in the fridge once opened . Probably more because it is a tidy place to put it in than because I "have" to.

diddl · 13/02/2010 18:23

It depends on whether or not you set any store by what is printed on the bottle, I guess.

kinnies · 13/02/2010 18:23

I do now.

I never used to.

It says on the back to keep in the fridge once open.

However, I know of no-one who has died as a result of ingesting room temp ketchup!

BigTillyMint · 13/02/2010 18:24

AnyFucker. If only!

Ketchup, fridge.

HP, cupboard.

This is because I like my ketchup cold on my chips. And because only DH uses HP and he likes it room temperature.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 13/02/2010 18:25

I never used to, but it does say so on the bottle. Mind you - I'd have thought that the vinegar in them would be a preservative .......

Find another reason to laugh at your MIL

BigTillyMint · 13/02/2010 18:29

Well DS eats ketchup like it's one of his 5-a-day and he's NEVER sick.

Maybe we just finish the jumbo bottles before they go off

Or maybe Heinz is just being extra-sure about avoiding the compo claims?

OP posts:
AnyFucker · 13/02/2010 18:29

fwiw, I keep ketchup in the cupboard

it has never gone off, mind you my kids go through a bottle very quickly so maybe that tells you summat

Jamieandhismagictorch · 13/02/2010 18:31

Yes, BigTilly - my DSs are the same - I doubt we'd ever have a bottle around long enough to go bad.

It has lycopene in it, which is good for you, apparently, so I reassure myself with that.

cakeywakey · 13/02/2010 18:34

Bottles say to keep in the fridge and to finish after a certain length of time once opened. So YABU

TrillianAstra · 13/02/2010 18:40

Ours live in the fridge. But mostly because we don't get through them terribly quickly, adn tehre's nowhere else convenient to keep them.

BitOfFun · 13/02/2010 18:43

Cold ketchup is just wrong.

Morloth · 13/02/2010 18:46

We do fridge here, the real question is where you keep the Vegemite, or I suppose Marmite. When DH and I first got married he used to put it in the fridge. Weirdo.

DuelingFanjo · 13/02/2010 18:48

We don't keep ours in the fridge. cold tomatoe sauce - yuckitty.

DuelingFanjo · 13/02/2010 18:49

tomato!!!!

tethersend · 13/02/2010 18:55

Does she keep the eggs in the fridge? That's the only true measure of someone's character, IMO.

cakeywakey · 13/02/2010 20:17

Eggs at room temp - Delia says so

tvaerialmagpiebin · 13/02/2010 20:20

Hmm- I heard a woman from the Egg marketing board or somesuch on Woman's Hour say that eggs need stability of temperature, so keep them in the fridge, as temp in kitchen goes up and down whilst you are cooking / not cooking. Supermarkets keep them out of fridge because they have stable temp in store. She also said keep them in original box not egg tray in fridge so they don't absorb other stuff from fridge (e.g. half an onion) as shells are porous.

Deffo take eggs out of fridge half an hour before you ant to use them though, especially for baking.

Georgimama · 13/02/2010 20:22

Nutella is about the only fridgey type thing that you don't keep in the fridge. Pretty much any other kind of spread, sauce or preserve needs to go in the fridge after opening.

Except honey.

Other than those two then, fridge.

BertieBotts · 13/02/2010 20:25

My mum always kept HP and ketchup in cupboards. We were a very small-amount-of-sauce-eating family - had one bottle of HP on the go for years and years, probably past its sell-by date, and it didn't go off. Ketchup was eaten quicker but was still in the cupboard for months with no ill-effects (although, does it separate in the fridge? It used to separate in the cupboard. I don't like it so have no idea)

XP used to like sauces in the fridge because he liked them cold. I prefer them room temperature but don't really eat them often anyway so don't actually have any in the house at the moment.

psychomum5 · 13/02/2010 20:29

I keep all mine in the fridge.

it won;t kill them to be kept in the cupboard, but for them to be kept in top condition for us to eat, and as I have the room (mahoosive american fridge/freezer for me), that is where they are stored.

so, in essence, YABU.
