she said that ketchup and HP sauce have to go in the fridge once they are opened.

Or do you all keep yours in the fridge?

We never have and nor did my mum. And DH has never said that we ought to

Depends how big your fridge is! If I put all the sauces DP likes to buy 'because it looked nice' in the fridge, there'd be no room for anything else, and I like to think I'd notice if the ketchup was growing mould/stinking before I slopped it over my chips!

tvaerialmagpiebin · 13/02/2010 20:34

I ate some pesto last week and as I was clearing up and putting things back in the fridge I noticed there was MOULD in the jar. I have no idea whether I ate a mouldy bit or not. Fortunately I didn't feel ill or have "side effects" afterwards (but I did bin the rest pronto).

UndomesticHousewife · 13/02/2010 20:41

Ketchup should go in the fridge, but I don't think brown sauce has to. I don't anyway I think I had a look on the bottle and it didn't say put it in fridge, but I put ketchup in fridge.

BertieBotts · 13/02/2010 20:50

Mould won't actually harm you anyway, it just tastes rank.

tethersend · 13/02/2010 21:23

Well done cakeywakey, you passed.

Wasn't ketchup invented before the fridge?

shockers · 13/02/2010 21:38

Georgimama... what about jam, marmite and peanut butter?

Georgimama · 13/02/2010 21:49

I would put the first two in the fridge. We don't have peanut btter but I assume it would be OK in the cupboard.

iwastooearlytobeayummymummy · 13/02/2010 21:58

I going to come over all Home Economics teacher here, but basically glass bootles of ketchup and sauce have been preserved ie boiled at high temperatures wirh sugar and vinegar then sealed whilst still boiling hot so minimal chance of going off even when open,as mould hates vinegar.
Plastic bottles of contain sauce cooked and then packaged at significantly lower temperature so in theory are more susceptible to going mouldy and losing their colour.
The long and short of it is you are both right as keeping it in the cupboard won't kill you ( too much sugar and vinegar) but keeping it chilled is OK too.
Basically just keeping on doing what you want to do especially if it annoys your MIL

crankytwanky · 13/02/2010 22:15

Cold ketchup is minging, however that's where it's stored. (The fridge Imean.) It takes us months to use up a bottle.

I just don't eat it.

shockers · 13/02/2010 22:15

Maybe that's why folk didn't used to keep them in the fridge, because they were in glass bottles.

Cold jam..... noooo!

Gumps · 13/02/2010 22:22

Wasn't there some big thing about someone getting food poisioning from ketchup not kept in the fridge? Or was it one of those urban myths? I have kept mine in the frideg ever since anyway.
Ok seriously lacking sleep as all I can think of is salmonella poisoning and thast not right wiht ketchup [bisuit]

BertieBotts · 13/02/2010 22:27

That is true, our HP sauce which lasted years was in a glass bottle, whereas the ketchup was in a plastic one and never got kept for so long. It was still months though and never went off.

wiki.answers.com/Q/Can_you_die_from_eating_expired_ketchup

I am not mad! Expired though not not kept in the fridge iyswim.
What a top Saturday night discussion!

MmmCoffee · 13/02/2010 22:38

I keep salad dressing stuff and salsa in the fridge. Everything else in jars goes in the cupboard - sauces, pickle, jam. The vinegar/sugar should keep it good for a long time.

My American husband was horrified when he found out I kept eggs in a bowl on the kitchen counter.

mine go in cupboard and have sticky rims

sayithowitis · 14/02/2010 00:50

Jams, sauces, ketchup etc, once opened go in the fridge. marmite and honey go in the cupboard. Bread on the other hand, stays on the counter because it goes stale much more quickly if it is kept in the fridge.

SayHitIsntSo · 14/02/2010 00:57

I agree with ANYFUCKER- sweetie, you are truly blessed if that's all you have to joke about your MIL- I can write an encyclopaedia on the stupid shit mistakes and quirkiness my MIL has, and still have more for the 2nd ed. LOL

Linnet · 14/02/2010 01:27

I keep ketchup and HP sauce in the fridge, I worked in a restaurant and all sauces and relishes were kept in the fridge so it's second nature for me to put it straight in there and it does say it on the bottle to refridgerate after opening. Plus it comes out of the bottle more easily if it's kept in the fridge.
