to breastfeed my dog?

Before I start, I am a regular, but have namechanged. Judge Flounce. There you go.

Anyway, a couple of years ago, after I'd just had my first DC, money was really, really tight and we'd not got any of the weekly budget left for dogfood. We've only got the one dog - he's a Yorkie and I had him for ages before the kids. He's my first child in a lot of ways and I have a lot of love for such a small dog.

So, we'd got no food and nothing that we could give him as a reasonable substitute but then I remembered that we'd got a couple of bottles of expressed milk left in the fridge. DD wasn't a big eater and so she wouldn't be needing them and anyway, I could always express more. I put the contents of one of the bottles into a bowl and Pickles happily lapped it up.

After this, I started to feed him with breastmilk fairly regularly. It was cheaper than dogfood and he always had loads of energy.

I'm not the only person who does this at all - there is a whole forum of people who do it on the internet and they encouraged me to actually breastfeed without expressing. As expressing were making my boobs really sore, I decided to give it a go and he loved it. I felt that our bond increased tenfold and it made me feel that I had a purpose after DD moved onto solids.

The reason I'm writing this is because today I decided to tell DP (of four years - I've only been doing it when he's out of the house so far). We have an honest and open relationship and I don't see anything wrong with what I'm doing. Anyway, he flipped and said I was a freak. Now he's gone out in the car with his wallet and his phone. I don't understand - Pickles is just like a baby to me - why shouldn't I do something which I wouldn't do for my other baby?

So AIBU? Is it so wrong to share my love in this way?

an elderly woman patient in hospital once told me how as a baby she was leftat the bottom of the garden one day but it was ok because when she cried with hunger the dog heard and came and suckled her. Thankfully she was lying on hes tummy at the time so did not see my face!

Kitkatqueen · 12/02/2010 23:09

Hang on , is there a crap tips thread on mn then?

Kitkatqueen · 12/02/2010 23:12

JammyQueenOfTheSewers · 12/02/2010 23:25

I've a bit of an issue with this. Surely your dog needs more than just milk - sounds like animal cruelty to me allowing him to become malnourished.

I think it would be kind of hard to milk a donkey - they have small nipples compared to a cow (who conveniently have udders)

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 12/02/2010 23:43

Today DD asked me if ladybirds breastfeed their babies....

Heracles · 13/02/2010 01:38

That's nothing; I carried out female circumcision on my pet elephant. With a scythe. And it was a bull elephant.

Take a Break have paid me £14 for my CRAZY story...

As a veterinary surgeon, I feel the need to put my judgy hat on and tell you that YES, YABU

Your dog is being abused!! This is not a proper diet for a diet for a dog- he needs a far more balanced diet than human breastmilk can provise- doggy breastmilk has a completely different constitution. And that is to say nothing of the dental problems he will have if he carries on having nothing to chew but your nipple.

Do what you will with your bosoms (after all they are yours- don't let your DH make you think otherwise!) but fgs feed you dog some proper FOOD!

however, if you want to continue feeding the dog (and your whole family) with your breastmilk, I have co-written a recipe book which incorporates bm into both human and canine diets. Will only cost £11.99, but seeing as you are a member of MN will sell you it for £9.99- CAT me.....
