to breastfeed my dog?

Before I start, I am a regular, but have namechanged. Judge Flounce. There you go.

Anyway, a couple of years ago, after I'd just had my first DC, money was really, really tight and we'd not got any of the weekly budget left for dogfood. We've only got the one dog - he's a Yorkie and I had him for ages before the kids. He's my first child in a lot of ways and I have a lot of love for such a small dog.

So, we'd got no food and nothing that we could give him as a reasonable substitute but then I remembered that we'd got a couple of bottles of expressed milk left in the fridge. DD wasn't a big eater and so she wouldn't be needing them and anyway, I could always express more. I put the contents of one of the bottles into a bowl and Pickles happily lapped it up.

After this, I started to feed him with breastmilk fairly regularly. It was cheaper than dogfood and he always had loads of energy.

I'm not the only person who does this at all - there is a whole forum of people who do it on the internet and they encouraged me to actually breastfeed without expressing. As expressing were making my boobs really sore, I decided to give it a go and he loved it. I felt that our bond increased tenfold and it made me feel that I had a purpose after DD moved onto solids.

The reason I'm writing this is because today I decided to tell DP (of four years - I've only been doing it when he's out of the house so far). We have an honest and open relationship and I don't see anything wrong with what I'm doing. Anyway, he flipped and said I was a freak. Now he's gone out in the car with his wallet and his phone. I don't understand - Pickles is just like a baby to me - why shouldn't I do something which I wouldn't do for my other baby?

So AIBU? Is it so wrong to share my love in this way?

yes. i agree your DH wants your breasts just for playthings for himself.

perhaps it would appease him a little if you offered him your milk to share with the dog.

EdgarAllenSnow · 12/02/2010 20:51

how would you ask the cow if she minded?

EccentricaGallumbits · 12/02/2010 20:55

informed consent? in a language understandable and acceptable to both parties?

parakeet · 12/02/2010 21:04

I think it's a wind-up too, but I would like to prove my case through a point no-one else has yet raised: how could it possibly be cheaper to breastfeed your dog than to buy dog food? Cheap dog food is cheaper than the cheapest human food. And breast milk isn't really free, you need to ingest the extra calories (via human food) in order to produce the milk.

Not sure how expensive praying mantis food is though.

HerBeatitude · 12/02/2010 21:11

I still breastfeed my hamster, the guinea pigs, the rabbit, the cat and the boa constrictor.

HTH.

catsdontscreetch · 12/02/2010 21:13

Donkey milk is meant to be most similar to human.

EccentricaGallumbits · 12/02/2010 21:13

Boa Constrictors are lactose intolerant Beati.

EccentricaGallumbits · 12/02/2010 21:14

so why drink cow milk but not donkey?

i don't get it.

personally i think all milk (with perhaps the exception being human) is utterly disgusting and unnecessary.

HerBeatitude · 12/02/2010 21:16

Oh sorry, it isn't the boa constrictor I'm feeding, it's the feather boa.

I think the feathers are a bit lactose intolerant, they're beginning to be a bit whiffy.

pigletmania · 12/02/2010 21:47

oh dear

Pikelit · 12/02/2010 21:58

Christonabike! What a piss poor effort. I suppose we must blame it (and the tides of dreadful trolling to follow) on half term.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 12/02/2010 22:01

But it's actually a true story!

Kitkatqueen · 12/02/2010 22:06

Hey, dwp, is that you in the picture????

Pikelit · 12/02/2010 22:07

True? I don't think so. The article in question appears on the wilder shores of tabloid tripe.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 12/02/2010 22:12

Oooh I'm not the op this time!

It's a 'crap tip' comrade

SuperAmoo · 12/02/2010 22:16

wow this is a REALLY wierd thread - breastfeeding a fricking dog - that is SICK!

Kitkatqueen · 12/02/2010 22:17

It was the "damn Busted " comment dwp! I thought you were the op fessing up! LOL!

ShowOfHands · 12/02/2010 22:22

I know who the OP is I think. Been on MN too long, started to recognise posting styles. Am assuming it's one of my Friday Night topic comrades. Sits on the green bit of a tree like the impish thing she is, yes?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 12/02/2010 22:34

Ah you Sleuth! But not a super sleuth or you'd have spotted the crap tips thread.

here is the article - it's for real

SparklyGothKat · 12/02/2010 22:41

pmsl... ewww

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2010 22:53

And to think, I was torn between reading this and the oven chips thread first.

LegoRules · 12/02/2010 22:55

Just how old is this dog meant to be??? Yuck! Ewww! LOL!

ShowOfHands · 12/02/2010 22:57

Crap tips thread I have never clicked on, assume it's a scuttlebuggery, tearoom, bar affair full of people wot noes each other. Am I missing something brilliant? You clearly planned this trollery, that would have worked had Reality not burned our irises with that link some weeks ago.

Pixie then? I really do MN too much.

I linked the thread with the original link to the article ages ago. We knew it was a real article, that madness doesn't get past us twice.

SpeedyGonzalez · 12/02/2010 23:00

I actually thought the article was a wind-up until I saw the photo. Anyone good at telling whether a pic has been photoshopped?

I'm pretty open about many aspects of bfing but Suzanne Morgan has issues.

That said, I can't quite recall how I came across this pic. Doesn't look like the monkey's taking, does it? Somehow it seems less odd with a primate since we're so closely related, but then there's still a part of me that goes: 'Eeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!'
