God I am livid! old dirty stealing bastard old man! I hope he chokes on what ever he BUYS with my money!

I withdrew £10 from the cash point and when going to put in into my purse (still at cash point) I accidental dropped it, so moved ds1 pushchair out the way t bend down and collect it, and the old man picked it up and PUT IT IN HIS POCKET!

I said excuse me, but that £10 you just put in your pocket is mine, Ive just dropped it, he said what £10, he must have been about early 70ish!

Lady next to me, said I seen you also, now give the lady her money, he still refused, I showed him my bank receipt and said ITS MY money sir, he refused to speak to me, so I called over to the trolley attendants and asked for them to get the security guards, which they did, they came over and I explained the situation but still he refused, so I said I would call the police as he is stealing!, but security guards said it would be my word against his!

By this time it was 11.35 and I had to pick ds1 from Nursery at 11.50, so I told the fecking man I hoped he chocked on it, and that he was a disgrace to society!

I honestly wanted to throttle him, honestly I am so livid and cant believe their is people pout their like this!

Its so blatant human disregard for another own greed!

'theft by finding' is very real and is an offence.

if the pledge is what i think it is, it is part of the policing pledge which is what your local force 'promises' the public it will do i.e. answer all queries/complaints with 24hrs, respond to a call within certain time, keep you aware of whats going on in your case etc.

complain to the station inspector - they will have to acknowledge your complaint - say you felt that you were not treated correctly, you are aware of the offence of theft by finding, the male knew the money belonged to you and you have witnesses......

plus you could always mention the local press.....

Ripeberry · 12/02/2010 17:24

Well pensioners these days don't get much money, you'd be surprised, most shoplifting is done by them. So for you, I would just be too shocked to even try and get it back as they could suddenly change their story and say that I was beating them up.
Great age does not mean that they are nice, just more cunning

Ripeberry · 12/02/2010 17:26

I would have just followed him, took a photo with my mobile and told the local newspaper.
Someone would recognise him

LittleMrsHappy · 12/02/2010 17:31

Not going down the paper route, dh and I, are going to ask to see someone else tommorrow (if possible)

just cant get over how braisent some people are, Me and dh going out as MIL is having kids tonight, will be having a drink less now (maybe thats a good thing lol).

What a horrible sod of an old man! Can't believe that it isn't illegal!

have you gone to Asda and asked for them to check CCTV? Maybe they could print the photo of the man off? I'd be tempted to put a "wanted" poster by the cash machines, or maybe a "warning" poster.

GothDetective · 12/02/2010 17:38

What about that couple that found a lottery ticket blowing about in the street, took it home and the numbers came up and they won a significant amount.

The woman who'd bought it realised she'd dropped it and was able to prove she'd bought it. Camalot passed the finder's details onto the police and they were found guilty of theft. I rememebr the judge said they were lucky not to go to prison!

What this bloke has done to you sounds very wrong wheras to be honest if I found a lottery ticket blowing down the street I'd be tempted to keep it. So I don't know how the police can tell you the man has done nothing wrong, he blatently has done something wrong and illegal.

ConnieComplaint · 12/02/2010 17:47

I second PuppyMonkey - I'm a reporter with a local paper (unfortunately not your local paper though!!) and we would follow this story up with great interest

LittleAngelicRose · 12/02/2010 17:54

I want to say I'm stunned and horrified by the developments from the police visit, but to be honest, I'm not. It is too much trouble for them to bother with. Why on earth would the police want to actively fight crime when it is easier to sit and make phone calls to meet their targets?

Had you dropped the note and walked away and then come back, fine, but it was in sight all the time. It was obvious to the thief that it was yours and that HAS to be theft.

I know you said you wouldn't go down the newspaper route, but if you get no joy from the police then it is a bit of revenge on them and the nasty, wrinkled, bitter, twisted, hope he gets his pension stolen in a similar manner, thief.

ConnieComplaint · 12/02/2010 17:56

On a light news week, this is the kind of story would go secondary on our front page!!! LOL but we do live in a sleep backwater of a town.....

RockbirdandHerSpork · 12/02/2010 18:01

Would have taken a photo as well and a notice with his mug shot and 'thieving old sod' would be on every tree and lamp post in the area. Supposing you had dropped £200? Would it still be nothing illegal or what? What a pile of old toss. Am

NeedCoffee · 12/02/2010 18:06

Bollox to it not being illegal, definition of theft: A person is guilty of theft if he dishonestly appropriates property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it;

CheerfulYank · 12/02/2010 18:23

What a jerk! I'd be livid too.

Are we certain he's not senile?

GoldenGreen · 12/02/2010 18:36

Nonsense. If you dropped a phone or handbag and someone took it it would be theft so why not a tenner? He is a thief. Sorry you got nowhere with the police.

PrincessFiorimonde · 12/02/2010 18:53

Goth Detective - the case concerning the found lottery ticket sprang to my mind too.

Little Mrs - can only assume the police are reluctant to follow this up because it's 'only' a tenner. But the principle is the same whether it's £10 or £300 or whatever. I hope you do follow this up and at the very least get an apology from the supermarket AND from the police.

Ripeberry · 12/02/2010 21:49

Sounds like they could not be bothered with the paperwork . A friend of mine is a policewoman and when they are on 'speed trap' duty, they let lots of people off especialy towards the end of the shift.

PorphyrophillicPixie · 13/02/2010 12:48

I'll be waiting for an update with interest. I'm very curious and hope that you can do smoething about it!

roulade · 13/02/2010 19:09

There was also a case very recently about a guy who found a winning betting slip in the street and cashed it in, he got done for theft by finding too.

NeedCoffee · 15/02/2010 14:53
