in promising my dc's a trip to Burger King in the presence of other children?

This was the other day when I picked the dc's up from school. They already knew we were going straight into town as I had things to do, but weren't happy about it! My friend next to me was laughing as she says hers react the same if it's town/appointments etc.

My youngest was complaining of being hungry so I said why didn't we go to Burger King first for early tea, then I get my things done. Their faces lit up at that, (was feeling quite hungry myself too)!

Of course my friend's children came out behind them and instantly started pestering their mum for Burger King too, "Pleeeease Mum, we can all go together, pleaaaaase!" Their mum wasn't best pleased, said no and that they needed to get home. She shot me a look as she left with them wailing and muttered, "Thanks for that ONTHEPIER!"

I felt awful, was I being unreasonable, wasn't really thinking!

YANBU - if she can't handle her kids disappointment then thats her problem .

Eglu · 11/02/2010 16:44

YANBU - not your problem at all.

BelleDameSansMerci · 11/02/2010 16:45

I think you were brave mentioning BK in front of other parents!

chegirlsghadabloodynuff · 11/02/2010 16:49

YANBU.

Can you ask her for a list of things that are not permitted to be uttered in front of her children?

Or just tell her to get a flippin grip and learn to say NO.

Pineapplechunks · 11/02/2010 16:52

YANBU, she was being miserable.

waitingforbedtime · 11/02/2010 16:53

Oh I hate people like this when you arent allowed to mention anything that may upset their kids because they'll want it too.

YADNBU

2shoesisboredwithjsthreads · 11/02/2010 16:54

yanbu, hope your kids enjoyed it

LetThereBeRock · 11/02/2010 16:54

YANBU.

activate · 11/02/2010 16:59

well no you're not unreasonable

but then neither was she to be honest

because of something you said in front of her children, she had begging, complainging and tantrums - so she wouldn't be best pleased would she?

juneybean · 11/02/2010 17:02

If your kid had a shit would hers want one too?

God so many times I've been bowling/ to the park/ shopping with friends then suggested Pizza Express/ Burger King/ Nandos...all the while hoping they would agree to burger king as kids are tired and it's an easy in an out thing.

Only my best friends eyes light up when I say Burger King

mummygirl · 11/02/2010 18:02

what a cow for saying that to you. She's got to get a grip!

RockbirdandHerSpork · 11/02/2010 18:08

You might as well give up talking to your children in public if you have to watch everything you say. From your op it sounds like you were addressing your children about your evening. If hers were earwigging then tought luck. Up to her to yay or nay them.

I fancy a Bacon double cheeseburger now...

TheCrackFox · 11/02/2010 18:09

YANBU.

I once had a neighbour who said exactly the same because I had the temerity to let my DCs have a chocolate milkshake in their own garden. Wasn't my fault/problem that she won't allow her children chocolate.

MMMMmmmmm Burger King...I love them b/c they make their fries in a dedicated fryer, thus ensuring that no wheat comes in contact with my celiac havin' self.

YANBU. If my kids started in on it I'd just say, "we'll go another time, not today." End of.

Yanbu, the womans an idiot.

AliGrylls · 11/02/2010 18:27

Handling disappointment is one of life's lessons. Absolutely yanbu.

psychomum5 · 11/02/2010 18:31

nope, YANBU.

I have had it happen to me, being in your friends shoes, and I just lie bribe them with going another day as today we have something very important to do. I think she was a tad out of oreder in the way she handled it TBVH, and to then blame it on you was completely out of order!

mazzystartled · 11/02/2010 18:34

yanbu

but you could probably have waited 5 mins till they were out of earshot

onagar · 11/02/2010 18:42

YANBU. Not your problem and if she can't cope with saying no to hers she is going to have bigger problems than that.
