I seriously dread the end music and the titles,as my 3yr old ds jumps up shouting, "lets make something",can't stand doing any of that arty crap .Usually just offer him a treat as a distraction. What a crap mummy I am.

I'm soglad I'm not the only one who's bugged by Mister Maker cutting stuff from the middle of the card. DH thinks I'm overreacting to get so irritated by it! Fortunately DS hasn't yet wanted to actually make any of his stuff and is quite happy to spend hours sticking bits of scrap paper to other bits of scrap paper.

What really is the work of the devil, though, is Chuggington...

I was in the infant school on Tuesday with DS3 as I was taking assembly with a friend.

A teacher took DS3 (2 3/4yrs) off down to the reception area to play and the community policeman was around.

DS3's eyes then apparently lit up and he shouted excitedly, and pointed "its Mr Maker"

Daisydaydream · 11/02/2010 22:36

scrappydappydoo you can paint on any plastic or shiney surfaces, just mix some PVA glue and a little washing up liquid in the paint! It covers the plastic when wet and won't flake off when dry! (I'm a children's activity play worker )

(sorry if this has been posted before, didn't read whole thread!)

tethersend · 11/02/2010 22:44

If it's any consolation, I'm an art teacher and everything he does it utter shite and children's creativity is better fostered by giving them random materials and just letting them get on with it. It's far too prescriptive, and reinforces the (wrong) message that everything children make has to look like something else. It's bollocks.

'I am a shape' is the work of some twisted evil genius, though.

WingedVictory · 11/02/2010 22:49

Ahhh, DS loves Mr Maker. Happily, for my sanity, I do not.

... although I like him. Thanks for the RL stories of him behaving decently and kindly in public!

TheMysticMasseuse · 12/02/2010 07:07

I'd have thought he was your type Team, what with the tweed blazer and all .

MoChan · 12/02/2010 07:12

YABU. Mr Maker rocks.

Though his voice is mad, verging on irritating. My OH and I enjoy imagining the incongruousness of him talking like that down the pub, at home, etc.

MoChan · 12/02/2010 07:15

Though, to be fair, I can completely understand the sinking feeling generated by a child's requests to 'craft'. I like doing that stuff, and am reasonably good at it... if that weren't the case, I think I would dread it.

I just can't do craft! I buy crafty boxes of stuff because the DDs love to do it, but I always get so pissed off when things don't work or end up not being 'simple to do' as the wording on the front tells me.

I'm a bad Mommy re: arts and crafts. Give me Maths homework anyday!

spotofcheerfulness · 12/02/2010 12:46

Is it just me or does the entire programme seem to be inspired by some massive acid trip? I'm quite tolerant of most CBeebies progs (even chuggerchuggerchuggerchuggerchuggington) but I have to turn MM off as my eyes go funny. And he does sometimes look pretty high (because of the gloopy glue fumes, I'm sure)

GreenMonkies · 13/02/2010 11:17

I spend £450 a month so DD's can do messy making at nursery.

My house is enough of a chaotic pigsty as it is without adding "craft" to the equation.

(I'm not all bad, we bake regularly)

I wouldn't mind but DS is like a stroppy teenager:
Him "pen, PEN!"
Me: "yes here is the pen, now lets draw the monsters eyes"
Him "eyes? Oooohhh NOOOO"
Me; "ok shall we make the monster later?"
Him: "oh NOoooooooooooooooooo"
Me: "ok, look lets draw the eyes together. now where's the tape?"
Him: " OhhaaaaaaaAAAAhhhh"

giraffesCantCeilidhDance · 14/02/2010 15:18

I find him strangely attractive.

GreenMonkies · 14/02/2010 16:50

You know, aside from the fact that I am obsessed with food, particularly cup cakes at the moment, I think one of the things I find so objectionable about "children's crafts" shows, is that they produce useless bits of tat. All the stuff they make has no purpose at all, except just to be made. Does that make any sense?

I can actually tolerate I Can Cook as they make something worth while (I won't start on Big Cock, Little Cock they just faff about with bits and make food pictures ), but a Bug Eyed Creature made from Air Drying Modelling Clay, Googley Eyes and Gloopy Glue is just a dust catcher!!

LOL This thread has had me in stitches!

I don't mind Mr Maker. It's those two wierdo's on Show Me Show Me who wind me up!

ktb11 · 22/08/2010 16:26

my main problem with Mr Maker is the incorrect names 'the shapes' have. They are labelled 2D (square, rectangle, triangle, and circle) when they are clearly 3D (cuboid, cuboid, triangular prism, and cylinder/disc).

Does anyone else think this a problem? If we are going to teach our kids something/anything, shouldn't it be the right thing?
