to allow DS of 13 to eat a biscuit before dinner?

DP flies into a rage if I turn a blind eye to this, which I do from time to time. Now a huge sandwich I would veto, but I just can't summon the energy to get excited about a biscuit. It's different upbringings. In my (middle class) family food was around and available and we all enjoyed our meals, but my mother wouldn't bother herself if we nibbled beforehand sometimes. Also - sometimes I get hypoglycaemic if I wait too long to eat, so I just think - don't suffer, eat!
My DP looks back and in his mind's eye he sees the setting of the farmhouse table, the 'come right NOW or else', the rigid rules, the 'eat everything up' mentality. In my relaxed family, we used to drift in to the table with our books. But we knew if we left it too late there might be nothing there, so we did come.
I want harmony above all things in my house, and I also wish to hell he would just leave it to me!!
He starts yelling and moaning at him. It's not pretty. I don't want issues over food. Everyone gets upset.
AIBU?

But yes, back to poster.

What do you need from us?

bellavita · 07/02/2010 22:19

What do you expect in an AIBU thread boil?

MadameDefarge · 07/02/2010 22:21

Wise words bellavita. OP a bit too perky for a gal with a raging DP.

Exactly Madame, exactly!

boilinthebag · 07/02/2010 22:25

Now that you've all finished nosing up each others' jumpers, I get it - i don't think I am being unreasonable. Madame doesn't think I am being unreasonable, nor do most others. I need consistency and a shared understanding with DP. I need to go and hide in the boxroom until dinner is served.
with the biscuits preferably, and a large glass of wine. Now I will bow out with a flourish before I get my toes trodden on again, and say goodnight and farewell.

13 is quite old enough to be making one's own choices about biscuit consumption and timing thereof IMO!

TrillianAstra · 07/02/2010 22:27

No matter what the disagreement, and even if you were wrong to allow the biscuit, it is not good if one half of a parenting team is yelling because the other has allowed something that they would not allow. Discuss it away from the children and come to a decision that you will both stick to.

I would prefer a chocolate digestive Shiney!

boilinthebag · 07/02/2010 22:30

Well I am only perky through trying not to let it get to me. It does though. Maybe that's why the name occurred to me - subconsciously I'm boiling but in the bag. See I'm not WWC. That's a silly name. BitB is a good imaginative name. Sorry if I'm perky. I try to get on with it.
