to allow DS of 13 to eat a biscuit before dinner?

DP flies into a rage if I turn a blind eye to this, which I do from time to time. Now a huge sandwich I would veto, but I just can't summon the energy to get excited about a biscuit. It's different upbringings. In my (middle class) family food was around and available and we all enjoyed our meals, but my mother wouldn't bother herself if we nibbled beforehand sometimes. Also - sometimes I get hypoglycaemic if I wait too long to eat, so I just think - don't suffer, eat!
My DP looks back and in his mind's eye he sees the setting of the farmhouse table, the 'come right NOW or else', the rigid rules, the 'eat everything up' mentality. In my relaxed family, we used to drift in to the table with our books. But we knew if we left it too late there might be nothing there, so we did come.
I want harmony above all things in my house, and I also wish to hell he would just leave it to me!!
He starts yelling and moaning at him. It's not pretty. I don't want issues over food. Everyone gets upset.

thirdname:No he goes off on one if he sees me having something too. Though it would be a sarky remark and moan rather than a bawling out.

Oh please, don't get all fisticuffs with Shiney; you must know this behaviour is bonkers, and it can't have arisen overnight.

Sometimes we have to look to ourselves and realise how we have let situations develop where a grown man flies into a rage over a 13 year old having a biccie. This cannot be a new situation, so you must shoulder some of the blame for colluding in it.

Blimey, I let my 9 year old make his own decisions about food, because even if he does snack before dinner, he will eat it when its put in front of him. Oh, yes, and he is not a toddler to be monitored at every turn.

Danthe4th · 07/02/2010 21:56

He needs to save his arguments for something that matters, give it a few years and your DP is so going to wish he hadn't made a fuss over a biscuit.

bellavita · 07/02/2010 21:57

I let mine, because I know they will eat their tea. They usually only ask if they have to wait for their tea ie. if DH is late home. A biscuit is not going to ruin their appetite.

However, my brother lets his DS eat whole huge chocolate bars before dinner/tea and then wonders why he doesn't eat proper meals...

MadameDefarge · 07/02/2010 21:58

Oh, my dear, if he is sarky about your food intake, I daresay this is the tip of the iceberg...but you don't need me to tell you that, do you?

boilinthebag · 07/02/2010 22:02

Oh MadameD...you are so wise. I wish you were my neighbour! I love your certainty and of course you are right.

As long as he eats his dinner it isn't a problem.

He's 13 FFS! He's getting to that age when they have hollow legs! Yr Dp had better get used to it because he'll soon be eating biscuits before, after and during dinner!

As long as he still eats his dinner no problem! He's about to have a significant growth spurt.... my baby boy is now 6 foot 3!

GypsyMoth · 07/02/2010 22:13

thoght that too madame....however,wash with care DOES stick around to keep posting

Lord you're a curious lot. It's as if you've got to fight your way through the first wave of Msnet Furies just to get taken seriously.
