to think that that advert with the coffee boasting about the 97% less packaging are deluded

it is still packaging.

it is still completely contained in a package.

so how the hell can it be 97% less..... 97% less would surely mean part of it would be open?? it is not a glass jar, I agree, but......

oh, and surely, for eco, you should be able to recycle said packaging.

it is plastic.......in my town, you are not allowed to put that type of packaging in the recycling bin.

nuts, completely nuts, or am I missing someing seeing as I don't actually buy that coffee.

are you very bored still in hospital psycho

SoupDragon · 06/02/2010 08:35

IIRC, you can stick a label to the pack and send it, free, to Kenco for recycling.

EleanorBuntingCupcake · 06/02/2010 08:36

i suspect it is the carbon footprint of the packaging they are referring too and yes they have probably massaged the figures for marketing purposes.

i never buy glass jars of coffee

Jamieandhismagictorch · 06/02/2010 08:37

Good Morning !

I think it doesn't make much sense on the face of it, but I imagine that the plastic takes less resources to make, and most importantly, is lighter, so transport will be cheaper and use less fuel , per unit.

Also. maybe it means that you get more coffee, and less packaging for your money, assuming the volume of coffee and the price are the same as before.

Agree about the recycling. Our LA recycles some types of plastic, not sure about that one though

belgo

belgo · 06/02/2010 08:40

I imagine NHS coffee is still as bad as ever?

psychomum5 · 06/02/2010 08:41

belgo, am at home now (got released yesterday, finally), but am on hospital hours, and also still shuddering and juddering and not allowed to do anything (should be lovely, tis not so great when forced).

soupy, I did not now that. and am very glad to see you are not snapdragons

eleanor, I buy glass jars, but re-use them for cubs and scouts so I recycle them well

jamie, I had not thought about weight/coffee ratio.

From their website:

"How can a bag be more eco-friendly than a glass jar?

We admit, it does sound surprising, but the simple answer is they?re more efficient to produce, and compared to our jars send 97% less waste to landfill because the lids are not widely recyclable. The Eco Refill packaging requires 81% less energy to make than our glass jars (source: Kraft eco calculator1).

But surely a glass jar is more recyclable?

Firstly, don?t forget the lid, which although is technically recyclable, is made of polypropylene and there are very few recycling facilities in the UK capable of recycling that material. So in the vast majority of cases the lid is sent to landfill. An Eco Refill pack weighs less than the jar lid alone, so purchasing an Eco Refill means sending less waste to landfill.

Secondly, we recognise that 40% of glass is not currently recycled (Source: Defra, 20092). And while obviously we?d like everyone to recycle their jars, and we know lots of Kenco coffee drinkers do, we need to acknowledge that not everyone does. A Kenco Eco Refill pack means everyone (whether they recycle their glass jar or not) can reduce their waste. "

The packs are recucled by Terracycle

My favourite adverts are for hair products:

"Up To (meaningless, could mean 1% or 70%) 75% more light-reflective (wtf is that, and how do you measure it ?)"

psychomum5 · 06/02/2010 08:44

oh, and yes, NHS coffee, times 9 a day, is not so hot. Literall actually, as they are not allowed to boil the water for H&S reason

I was in heaven when I got home to my lovely aribaca fairtrade coffee

OP posts:
belgo · 06/02/2010 08:44

glad you are home

Jamieandhismagictorch · 06/02/2010 08:45

So what I said SnapDragon (sort of). Not that I necessarily believe them.

belgo · 06/02/2010 08:45

really no boiled water? so the coffee has actually gotton worse in the last ten years? Who could believe it. Only in the UK.

psychomum5 · 06/02/2010 08:46

aha soupy...maybe I should have ;looked at that before comolaining here.

ach, no, complaining here teaches us all

if nothing else, teaches MN that I am bored

OP posts:
Jamieandhismagictorch · 06/02/2010 08:46

Yes, glad you are home. I see that being in hospital made you fiestier than ever

whyme2 · 06/02/2010 08:47

that advert really niggles me too. I think it says somewhere in the small print that is 97 percent less by weight so it sounds pretty impressive but actually isn't. grrr

belgo · 06/02/2010 08:47

Coffee jar lids get collected for recycling in Belgium.

psychomum5 · 06/02/2010 08:49

nope.....they are not allowd to boil the water, so coffee is never hot, and if they gove it when the docs are doing rounds, it is cold.....especailly as the cups are stoopid size!

oh, and no toasters allowed on the wards either, so no toast for breakfast, in case one of the patients sneeks into the kitchen and burns themselves by sticking their fingers into the toaster

cos yeah right, the hospitla is tha fabulous you wanna stay longer

OP posts:
psychomum5 · 06/02/2010 08:51

what I mean is, if they give you coffee on rounds, byt the time the doc has finshed examining you and they go, coffee is cold.

jamie, I aim to please

and as for those hair product claims.........how??

belgo, that is a gooooood system you have for the lids. you would think we could here!

OP posts:
belgo · 06/02/2010 08:51

I bet you are so glad to be home.

In belgium hospitals you can get beer with your meal, and wine on special occasions. No toast though, as belgian bread doesn't toast well.

psychomum5 · 06/02/2010 08:52

whyme, you are on my wavelength

OP posts:
psychomum5 · 06/02/2010 08:54

am very about the wine!

I miss wine......I need to be off meds first tho according to DH. He got very stern last night......I craved it, he said no

and as his name is simon, what simon says goes...

OP posts:
whyme2 · 06/02/2010 09:02

We have been indoctrinated from a young age to do as Simon says, you cannot fight it.

whyme2 · 06/02/2010 09:08

and those shampoo/hair dye/mascara adverts. 63 percent say their hair is more glossy. That still means over a third think it's a waste of money. If you want glossy hair eat dog food, pedigree chum make the same claims.

And 10 minute hair dyes - not ever. It takes 15 minutes to read and understand the instructions, 10 minutes to clear the bathroom and then 20 minutes afterwards rinsing your hair endlessly. 10 minutes - never.

rant over. wanders into kitchen to feed various children. .

msrisotto · 06/02/2010 09:10

Yeah, the 97% less refers to weight. Not massively impressive imo
