bought brand new car in sept

now have problem with it, still drivable but the problem is very annoying and "not on" considering its a 5 month old car!

phoned dealer service dept and the cant fit me in until middle of feb and are going to charge me for the courtesy car.

stupid stupid me thinking that to buy a brand new car would mean trouble free motoring.

Try quoting the "Sale of Goods Act" at them and going to Trading Standards/Consumer Direct if no joy.

gingernutlover · 01/02/2010 11:00

sorry I dont know what that is

how would it help me

(feels very dim)

OP posts:
TheArmadillo · 01/02/2010 11:03

consumer direct

consumer direct = govt organisation that tells you what your rights are wrt to situations like this. Give them a call first and find out.

gingernutlover · 01/02/2010 11:03

The reason that they wont look at it til middle of feb is becasue that is when the courtesy car will be available. They will look at it next week but it will leave me unable to get to work and they have refused to pay for the hire of a car instead.

OP posts:
gingernutlover · 01/02/2010 11:04

i should say they are onyl going to charge me £5 a day for the courtesy car (to cover insurance) but I am pee'd off that this is costing me any money at all.

Maybe I am very naive

OP posts:
Chulita · 01/02/2010 11:10

It shouldn't cost you at all, new cars come with a 3 year warranty at least - a 5 month old car definitely shouldn't go wrong. To charge for the courtesy car is disgusting when it's such a new car. I'd really try and argue this if I were you...

gingernutlover · 01/02/2010 11:15

i did ask why it was costing me at all and he said it was because it was my choice to take a courtesy car.

wondering if it is worth calling peugeot directly? The dealership will not be interested in anything i have to say

the charge is for the insurance apparently £5 a day.

i phoned peugeot direct and they are not in the least bit interested

all they did was give me the number of the next nearest dealership, who want to charge me £15 a day for a courtesy car instead of the £5 our nearest dealership want

i am just really pissed off that this is causing me so much incovenience and is costing me too. Why did i spend thousadns of pounds on a new car for this?

OP posts:
gingernutlover · 01/02/2010 11:31

they have already said they will need to keep the car overnight so collecting it from my work wouldnt be helpful

i am going to look at the warranty now

OP posts:
gingernutlover · 01/02/2010 11:35

the warranty does not cover "costs incurred as a result of the vehicle being off the road such as loss of enjoyment, use etc"

so in other words, we'll fix it if its broken but thats as far as we'll go.

OP posts:
mnistooaddictive · 01/02/2010 11:36

I didn't think they could charge you for courtesy car when it is so new. Try your own insurance company - sometimes they will cover you on a courtesy car for no extra money.
It is worth a try anyway!

Poledra · 01/02/2010 11:39

Can I ask, do you have any points on your licence? I'm not trying to be offensive, honestly, it's just that my Ford dealership will give you a courtesy car for free if your licence is clean, but ask for extra costs for insurance if you've got points.

I still agree that you should not have to pay for a courtesy car when your brand-new (well, 5 months old) car is being repaired.

clam · 01/02/2010 11:39

That's what I've done when I've used a courtesy car when mine's been serviced. Quick phone call and they send you a temporary cover note in the post. No charge. (Direct Line)

clam · 01/02/2010 11:41

That's a good point Poledra makes. Supposing someone had a drink-driving conviction, for instance (not you, obviously!) Their insurance premiums would be sky-high. Why should the garage pay for that?

gingernutlover · 01/02/2010 11:42

i do have 3 pointds on my license yes (from years a go)

but he didnt know this when he mentioned the charge

I will check with my insurance though, I am with swiftcover and am a named driver on my husbands policy if that makes a difference

peugeots stance of "once you bought it we dont care" is disgusting I think, they basically said they wotn do anything as its up to individual dealerships.

OP posts:
bruffin · 01/02/2010 11:43

I work for a dealership and we charge for insurance, which is £10 a day. However nobody has to take our insurance out they can provide their own. Have you tried your own insurance company to see if they will cover the courtesy car?

gingernutlover · 01/02/2010 11:44

the points are for a minor speeding offence BTW not drink driving. and havent afected the cost of our car insurance policy at all.

the dealership made money out of me buying the car, I fell they should look after the customer when that car goes wrong 5 months later (and in my opinion they are being crap)

OP posts:
gingernutlover · 01/02/2010 11:46

i should say we had a very bad expereince with another dealer 18 months a go when our underwarranty car blew up - so maybe I am being unnecessarily picky?

OP posts:
gingernutlover · 01/02/2010 11:49

okay looks like I would be covered by my own poliocy but only on a 3rd party basis

LOL have emailed my insurance company to check

i suppose 2 weeks isnt that horrendous, as I can drive the car, its just annoying (drivers door wont open from outside) but I wonder if the attitude would be better if the car was completely broken (betting on our past experience, it wouldn't)

So ....

PEUGEOT - you are rubbish he he

OP posts:
Chulita · 01/02/2010 12:10

OOH! Peugeot...we had one of them...their garages are so expensive! Don't think we'll be getting another one (mind you, my parents had 3 old peugeots that refused to die - we might have been unlucky!)

gingernutlover · 01/02/2010 12:12

doesnt sound good then ....

wish i had called this AIBU to think PEUGEOT don't give a toss instead

just awaiting email from insurance company, they are normally pretty good at replying quick.

happyharry · 01/02/2010 12:17

I know how you feel. I have a Renault and I have just received my 2nd safety recall. The garage is over ten miles from where I live. They do however provide a free courtesy car but it doesn't cover petrol.
